Patience Pays Off

Patient. Professional. Everyone goes home in one piece:

• A standoff involving a man with a rifle and a large knife that started late this morning at a South Loop rail yard ended peacefully a little after 1 p.m.
  
  Police were called to the scene of the standoff south of Roosevelt Road at Lumber Street, west of the Chicago River, a little before noon, according to the Chicago Police Department. The situation ended peacefully with no injuries and the man was taken to the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center for evaluation, officials said. Roads which had been closed in the area were reopened soon after.
  
  Amtrak police discovered someone trespassing on railroad property and the person may have been threatening suicide, police said. Amtrak police, with the help of Chicago police, had been dealing with a person who was trespassing on railroad property, an Amtrak spokesman said.
  
  An older man with what appeared to be a rifle and a butcher knife got into a standoff with police on the west bank of the Chicago River, at the east end of the rail yard, police said. At times, he covered the rifle with a jacket or blanket but also pointed it at police.

At any point, someone could have drilled this guy when pointing the gun at police. It's a measure of the professionalism of the Department that no one did and a peaceful resolution was achieved. Very good job Officers.
