Retro Pay Again

  • The House voted unanimously Saturday to retroactively pay back federal workers who are not receiving a paycheck because of the government shutdown.

Members approved the Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act, H.R. 3223, in a 407-0 vote, with 25 members not voting.

Workers will not be paid until the shutdown — now in its fifth day — ends. About 800,000 workers have been furloughed.
They must have remembered to send the letter.

This is so wrong in many ways. I can see the pay for the people that are working without pay at the moment. But for those that are sitting at home doing nothing, that is what they should get.

No wonder this Country is so screwed up.

Now I'm happy that the government employees are going to be paid. After all, it's not their fault. They're getting back pay for not having worked...

Not such a Bad Deal for them Now Huh?

yep, as the corporate run media runs sob stories about government workers getting furloughed, small time business owners such as restaurants and coffee shops are offering free hands out if the affected show their government i.d.

as a result we have people making a quarter mil a year or more workers from nasa getting aid.

oh the poor families. think about their families they are out of work..no...no they are on a paid vacation like every other time we ran this debt ceiling crisis scam and they received back pay to cover their time off.

this is the system that we protect. the behavior goes on unpunished so what do you expect.

DUH!

its a felony not to pay employees minimum wage! For the hard of learning that means if you work and do not receive pay you are receiving less than minimum wage.

That applies if you are the police too.

Not fair to the essential employees that are forced to work without pay. Meanwhile their bills go unpaid, their credit hit the skids. This government sucks

So this isn't a shutdown or slowdown, it's extra paid vacation for government workers.

When these shutdowns occur the fed employees should be given a choice, work without pay for now and you will be paid eventually or don't work and you take a real unpaid furlough. Look at the Capital Police involved in the shooting last week. They were all working without pay. I wonder if they will get OT or just a thank you with a hearty handshake.

Knowing Obummer he will probably have them fired for working during the shutdown.

Let them use their vacation pay, but don't pay them for doing nothing. In Chicago you might not do anything but at least you have to show up and keep that seat warm in that crew cab dump truck.

The only ones to really lose in this are those private contractors or civilian employees who work with the government. Those individuals since they are not directly government employees are now out of work and there will be no retro for them. And this is why so many contractors are reluctant to work with government. Once again the Welfare State takes care of its own and real workers get the shaft.

That Rolling Stone article about the Wall Street bojank artists who collapsed the economy in '07-'08 are now gunning for public employee pension money with the aid of fed, state and local governments?

It's a must read...

Cut the B.S., I cant't stand Obama, but lets not pretend like this is all one sided. both political parties suck. They are letting the extremest on both sides dictate policy. The fact is that if congress didn't like the health care law, they shouldn't have passed it in the 1st place. But at this point, they are holding our government hostage because they changed their mind?? that isn't how it works. Run the next election on the platform of changing/improving the law and if and when you win, make those changes.

This is not necessarily true. The bill states that essential employees will be retropaid according to the wording in the bill, it does not state non-essential. So it is still up in the air whether they will be paid. My husband is an air traffic controller that recently transferred to a new facility. Because of this he is not yet certified on any positions and therefore, is on LWOP. So, what you're telling me is that my family should suffer and worry about paying our bills on the account of the shutdown.?! Think before you speak. My husband would much rather be doing his job...he's not been given that option.

Guess who's not getting retro because 1 person decided not to send the letter and then he compounded it by lying to the the people who elected him until he could lie no more 14 months later and he is spending your money on lawyers fees trying to convince the labor board to hear his case. Guaranteed Mikey will not go back to a beat car and will end up on somebody's bodyguard detail getting Sgt s pay after he gets booted out of office.

for some its a week or 2 paid vacation. At least we worked and expect the retro, they will gewt paid for staying home/
Same thing happened last time the government was shut down, they got back pay.
The government screwed the "workers" again, The hard working ones have to work thru the shutdown, the "non essential" get to stay home and then get paid later. Sound familar

I've got some news for you, which is public info - if you bothered to read...public workers' unions cannot bargain for wages, benefits, or disciplinary guidelines. Their only function is to ensure that workers are treated according to the contract. They can file a grievance for seniority issues and they can argue for equal discipline for similar transactions. That's it. Wages and benefits are set by law. I'm a federal agent (former CPD) and I have no union. It is unlawful for federal agents to unionize. I am also working for no pay, and I cannot take time off during this nonsense.

As a furloughed DHS employee I would work while being furloughed, but the law of the land forbids us to work as "unpaid volunteers".

Sorry that's incorrect, we will not be given the option to use leave, in fact anyone on leave during the shutdown comes out of leave status and becomes furloughed.

I am a civilian federal employee on furlough. I don't think we should receive back pay for the time we didn't work; we can apply for unemployment. I want to work but I am not being allowed to. It is a layoff and bills still need to be paid. Privileged I am not.
