Tax Hike!

  • The Chicago Park District plans to raise property taxes as part of a 2014 budget that would add swimming classes, summer Night Out in the Park events and sports programs, the agency announced late Friday.

Parks Superintendent Michael Kelly is recommending a $3.6 million property tax increase, according to a district news release. The Park District announced the proposed budget at 5 p.m. Friday, a time when many people are focused on the weekend and public agencies often release bad news.

The Park District property tax increase, which still needs to be approved by the park board, is the latest example of Mayor Rahm Emanuel turning to a tax increase at a city agency under his control after publicizing investments and cost savings there throughout the year.
And why exactly do we need "summer Night Out in the Park" events anyway? Doesn't that seem to attract rifle fire and 13 wounded at a time? Aren't parks closed after a certain hour? Don't the buildings close? If they're open, how many people have to be on-duty there - at least one attendant and maybe even a building engineer/janitor on site. And didn't the Department start some sort of Park District Special Employment at ten of these parks?

Couldn't they cut hours and some of these nonsense "events" to save money?

While this is happening Quinn has a pension reform bill the world take EARNED benefits away current retirees sitting on his desk. Rahm said last week he will use that as a roadmap for all other unions.

If you don't get it he just pissed on the shoes of park district retirees.

I wonder if they have
"Summer night out" in Detroit?

You see, if you have night out in the park, the elected officials of the "Democratic" party can

1)give a speech and hand out freebies to the moldable crowd.

2)award a contract(s) to businessmen that support their "vision" cough.cough...I mean give them campaign money.

America

You don't understand the real reason for the tax hike Second City. The governments of this county needs to keep handing out useless expensive contracts to stay in power. Our politicians don't look in the phone book for vendors. They give out the contracts for those who will donate money back to their campaigns.

How about charging the beneficiaries of these programs a fee for the lessons, social programs, etc? Not very Democratic I guess.

Ah yes, raising already high taxes, is sure to be a big hit with the tax paying class of people. Maybe they think these extra park activities will pacify the restless natives? Don't be surprised when the city starts loosing population to greener pastures with lower taxes.

These jagoffs will raise taxes for anything except pensions. Isn't the park district the group that caved in Springfield recently? Go figure.

Come on SCC, the 13 shot in the park had nothing to do with a "nigh out i n the park" event!

Ever take your kids to a movie in the park? Theater on the lake? Circus in the park? These are the types of events that this program supports. All events are run within park hours an end before 11pm.

The park district is one taxing body that has not raised taxes in years. I believe 05 was the last time.

This is a worthwhile program and you should not try to slam it by connecting it to 13 people being shot in a park or if we have to pay for bathrooms and staff.

Tax hike, bullshit. The park district is spending TONS of money on state of the art playlots and professional sports quality TURF FIELDS. It's amazing how much goes into these. In the ghetto the shit's getting ripped up as fast as it goes in.

This Michael Kelly, is he a decendant of former 47th Ward alderman Edmund Kelly who was also
the Park district superintendant
and neglected the west and southside
parks and let them deterioate ?
That lagoon bridge next to the Douglas Park fieldhouse has had two
steel rods in the middle for the
past fifty years to prevent vehicle
traffic from crossing it. But it's
the wheel that squeaks that gets
the oil. And they tore-out the
tennis courts to make room to
build Collins High School, but no
one raised a red flag in protest.
To hell with them residents of the
westside when they accept misery as part of their lot in life and
refuse to better themselves.

Chicago property owners pay the lowest taxes in the county. They need to raise them up due to the money is going for their area's improvement. Let them pay for their own parks.

so we have had a 4 year state income tax in place that was supposed to be temporary which actually wiped away our last raise from the current contract we are in and on top of that we are not going to be getting any retro check in our future contract for one year due to our incompetent FOP President Shields. Whom by the way never admitted to his mistake until a year later for the record. He actually lied to many people about the 'letter" saying it was a rumor and come the first week of Dec you bet your life that the pension bill is going to pass in both House and Senate and Gov will sign it into law.
Wow people we are in trouble!

Can someone tell me why a yoga class at Olympia Park (Edison Park area) is $100.00 but all the "inner city" park district classes are $16.00?

Inner city parks have:

Golf, pottery, painting, sewing, gymnastics, basketball, hockey, ice skating, etc

Edison Park parks have:

Moms & Tots
Saxaphone or piano
Yoga (Tuesdays 9:30 am)

THE FOREVER INCOMPETENT 41st Ward Alderman's office flunky (the alderman is too busy to speak with a nobody) said there weren't enough instructors for all the parks so we had to pay more.

Now I can pay more taxes so somebody else can have movie nights in the park? RAHM - GFY

I can't wait to get out of this shithole of a city before it completely implodes.

I'm sorry...but the Park District isn't legally under City Control.

We know that they bend to the will of the current mayor...but they are a separate municipality legally.

But lets make it even...

Park district raises funds via prop tax.... CPD starts ticketing all park district employees for City Sticker violations as City Municipal Employees.

The point is, WE DON'T WANT MORE PARKS, or classes, or movie nights, or skate parks, or playlots. Sometimes, you just gotta stop spending money when you don't HAVE any more in your pocket.

since all thief rahmbo's speed cameras are located next to parks or schools he should be sharing some of his pirate loot with the park district so taxes wouldn't have to be raised--- ever go out to the suburbs, big modern facilities with clean amenities and no riff raff--- do rahmbo's little einsteins participate in any park district activities....

I'll just assume you've never actually been in the ghetto to see the parks there. Pick a random ghetto park throughout the city, go there, walk up to a swing set, try not to get hepatitis.

Artificial turf fields are a scam.

The rubber crumb infill is ground up car tires, and is filled with toxins. New Jersey examined the runoff from the turf fields, and banned them after that.

You can't play on them when it's hot out because their surface temp is usually 30 degrees hotter than the air temp.

So you gotta play on them at night - which means LIGHTS so they can 'maximize the use'.

Playing on them at night means cooler temps, but they don't have the natural bacteria to break down MRSA and other infectious disease, so kids with what would be a simple grass 'burn', ends up getting flesh eating bacteria and losing a limb...

So then you need to DISINFECT the surface which is more money...

And 5 yrs after the installation, you have to rip out the toxic rubber crumb infill and replace it at a cost of about 50% of the original installation cost. Disposal of the toxic rubber crumb infill is expensive because it's considered hazardous waste.

It's a scam - stick with regular turfgrass - cheaper, safer, and it works.
