Roundabout Justice
They got Capone on tax evasion and he died a broken syphilis-ridden wreck. In this case, we'll take it:
- Drug dealer Jason “J-Rock” Austin was locked up in Cook County Jail for allegedly killing an off-duty Chicago cop and his female friend while they sat in an SUV on the West Side.
But that didn’t stop the feared gang leader from reaching out to his family and friends on jail phones, the feds say.
And one by one, witnesses who pointed to Austin in the 2008 murders of Roberto Soto and his friend, Kathryn Romberg, suddenly changed their stories.
The triggerman wasn’t Austin at all — but a drug-dealing rival, some of the witnesses said.
Others said the cops beat them to lie about Austin, even going so far as to sue the Chicago Police Department.
Some got rides to the grand jury from Austin’s brother, Bubba, who wasn’t shy about showing off his gun.
And one woman who didn’t change her story got punched with a padlock by one of Austin’s girlfriends.
“You better stop trickin’ on J-Rock,” she warned, the feds say.
As the witnesses’ accounts collapsed, the prosecution fell apart, and Austin walked out of jail a free man less than a month after his arrest.
Now the feds have this piece of excrement convicted dead-bang on dope charges that will get him 40 years if the judge follows the recommendations. This one was a long time coming. One thing that would make it better was if everyone who participated in the intimidation got a few years in the pen, too.

Sadly, we live in an imperfect world.
Im sure the judge will receive $20,000 in cash, wrapped in a gray sweatshirt provided by a drug kingpin as well in this crooked ass state!
Once again, the detectives had it right the first time. The ASA's had a lot of nerve blaming the detectives instead of the gang banging murderers for having to drop this case, God Bless KB.
I got to know Soto while working with him in 002 back in the day. Real down to earth copper. It's nice to see that he wasn't forgotten and the scumbag will finally be put away.
You have it wrong when you say the FEDs. CPD had a huge part in the investigation.
To the real Police...there are other real Polices that are in a unit...they are behind the scenes..they are always working...despite what you hear! They don't quit...they don't stop...they push very hard against all bosses...and sometimes they win.
Good job to the officers who never lost sight of the goal and never forgot the officer. Great job.
Exactly we will take the little bit of bullshit justice we can for our brothers and sisters. Dont let this animal see the world again for at least 40 yrs...if lucky he will die of multiple rat bites...of course after at least serving 20 yrs that is
"Others said the cops beat them to lie about Austin, even going so far as to sue the Chicago Police Department." At the CPS high school where I teach, a scumbag history teacher (who grew up in the suburbs) encouraged four groups of sophomores and juniors to do their history fair projects about Chicago Police brutality. Her (presumed) lesson plan: Victims! You must see yourselves as victims!
Legalize drugs and set the people free.
Yes, it would be nice. Funny how it takes the Feds to make any kind of case.
Wow. Nice job, Feds. Thank you.
And read the comments after the article.
"Now the feds have this piece of excrement convicted dead-bang on dope charges that will get him 40 years..."
No. Between Obama/Holder at the federal level and Gov. Squish at the state level, no one will be doing serious time for dope. Drug laws are being effectively wiped off the books because too many Democratic voters are in prison, and Democratic politicians need to divert taxpayer money for prisons to their union masters and welfare-supported constituents.
In the near future, no one will do any prison time at all unless the crime is murder, armed robbery, or one of the many invented paper offenses that conservatives can be accused of.
Put this pos away for a long time, to bad we don't have death penalty it would be great for this scumbag. His cowardly crew that intimidated others, should be in prison with him.
Great work by CPD Gang Intelligence Unit
Heard a news report that prosecutors are hot on this, will emphasize to judge that this is a vicious cop-killer and push for maximum sentence.
I was at the crime scene the night it happened. It was terrible. States Attorneys should have gone ahead with charging him and beat the hell out of the "witnesses" that changed their story after telling what really happened to the Grand Jury.
You have it wrong when you say the FEDs. CPD had a huge part in the investigation.
3/21/2014 01:11:00 AM
That is the way it always goes. CPD does the actual work, the Feds just provide the money, a couple bodies, and take the credit. Imagine what we could do if we actually had support and resources. Great work, this has been a longtime coming.
Who was this guy's original bottom feeding, scum sucking lawyer who conspired to obstruct justice? The article says the lawyer was paid "$20,000 cash" and soon after "the lawyer's investigator began collecting the altered statements of the witnesses". A Source of Funds filed? The article does not give his name. Also who was the investigator? They should be charged.
They don't quit...they don't stop...they push very hard against all bosses...and sometimes they win.

You're kidding, right? Because that isn't legal and isn't going to happen.
To the poster who is worried about Obama and Holder. Obamas presidency is just about dead. He is at the end of his rope. His smoke and mirrors is finally starting to catch up to him. This offender will get slammed!!! Great job by CPD to nail this POS!!

Also knew him in the deuce in the the mid-late 80's. That was a rocking and rolling time. RIP! Unbelievable how many brothers in blue and white shirts too, that we've seen leave us in this lifetime.
The department has changed dramatically and the times are not what they once were but one thing will remain constant. The coming and going of friends on the job under some of the most unimaginable ways you could never guess. Stay safe and enjoy what good times come your way.
Maybe with concealed carry some of the witnesses will feel like they can testify and defend themselves.
Do not expect the disarmed to put their lives at risk when garbage willing to kill them confronts them.
real polices my balls
cpd = lazy
FEDS take all the credit for CPD work?
what a bunch of crap
cpd guys on fed task forces are mostly connected and lazy
KB you're still the best detective in this shithole city

Well how do YOU pluralize individual police officers in one word Mr. Fancy Schmancy Officer????
Now he won't B wearing that annoying hat, boasting of boozing all the X, and that rap, country Southern Rock thing will finally go away! Wheew! Damn, I hated that crappy music.
Wait, wait, U guys meant J-Rock? Aw fuck, I thought today was my lucky day. Here I'm thinking Kid Rooooooock.

The skin color of the offenders is not representative of a fair and equal sampling of the population of Cook County. Too many brown people getting convicted. I learned this from Toni Prickwinkle. Her people are getting picked on. Now the Feds have to concentrate on getting the white dope runners off of their corners up in Wilmette to even it out. You know, to be fair. So the numbers even up.
They need to do an undercover op up near Green Bay Road and Willow Road against the Traveling Reform Jewish Cabal, up in GW town.
This is the fact:
Attorney General Eric Holder has been lobbying the Senate to repeal the "Truth in Sentencing Laws" throughout the Senate.
It appears that he is going to get what he asked for.
J-Rock's case MIGHT fall into the
TIS repeal, and that's why the A -US Attorney IS fighting tooth and nail to keep J-Rock where he belongs. If they (AUSA) can prove J-Rock is a violent member of a violent gang, then there is a possibility that he may get the natural life.
That's the condensed version.
And a tid-bit: The A-US Attorneys connected to this case are extremely dedicated to the CPD officers involved, and they will not abandon this case or the officers involved.
Miss my partner everyday. He taught me how to be the real police in a wild time 20 years ago. He and his friend deserve this justice...
Will anyone be charged with tampering with witnesses?
In the near future, no one will do any prison time at all unless the crime is murder, armed robbery, or one of the many invented paper offenses that conservatives can be accused of.
Or possession of an "Assault weapon". Or a 15 round magazine.
If the CCSAO had any bells, the people that they got on tape lying to cover up for this POS would charged with perjury and Obstruction of Justice. But those charges would take some would work and would ruffle some feathers. Like those of Mammy Preckwinkle who don't believe that people of color should be in prison for ANY reason.
Or take the POS taped admission and use it impeach his testimony and try him for the two murders. But again, no bells and no will to do it.
Heard a news report that prosecutors are hot on this, will emphasize to judge that this is a vicious cop-killer and push for maximum sentence.
3/21/2014 10:32:00 AM
You're kidding, right? Because that isn't legal and isn't going to happen.
Have heard that too. While this POS deserves to be sent away for several lifetims, it is unsettling that info being presented at the sentencing hearing that was not presented in a trial.
Had the worthless dogs at the CCSAO not dropped the ball on this case and pursued the murder charges, this issue would not even be coming up. And the Fed sentencing background info would show 2 state murder convictions.
Vindication for the Detectives who worked this case. This case should have been charged years ago. It is truly a shame that the Cook County States Attorney let this double murderer go free. If we lived in a legit city, the citizens would demand accountability from the CCSA.
Blah blah blah blame Obama
Blah blah blah blame Holder
Blah blah blah blame 9.5
Blah blah blah blame the Machine
Why not just be glad, and thankful, that a solid
case is going to keep this POS off the streets,
and hopefully, he dies a miserable old POS in
prison, or dies some other horrible death behind
bars? Why all the political name calling? The
first case wasn't so strong, this one is. I'm just
glad the douchebag is (likely) going to go away
for a very long time. I will gladly settle for THAT.

It was charged. Charges dropped. Somebody has to go to court and point the finger at home boy and say, "That's him, he did it."
Do you think some ASA will take the stand and provide testimony? Why didn't you go there and testify against the shooter? Look up basic criminal law. Just because you charge a jagoff does not mean an automatic conviction.
So, if they charge him and he beats it due to no witnesses, that is it, he can never be tried again. With charges dropped the case might be brought again if something comes up and new evidence is found.

You do know that it was the fault of the witnesses that the case fell apart? How can the CCSA manufacture witnesses. One witness changed his story on the way to 26th St. How is that the fault of CCSA? You go to 3000 W Franklin and find some good witnesses who saw a homicide at 2 in the morning and who will testify on behalf of the police. That's the world we live in. Who is on the street there in the middle of the night? Divinity students?

What do you do with those bells? Is that like The Bells of St Mary's? Or Silver Bells? The Salvation Army has bells around Christmas time. Can you wait till then?
"Well how do YOU pluralize individual police officers in one word Mr. Fancy Schmancy Officer????"
3/21/2014 07:34:00 PM
Well, Mr Stupid Fucking Idiot, the plural of police is police.
Actually, police is always plural, there is no singular noun form of police.
Here are two examples: If there were a couple of uniformed individuals at your door asking for your spouse, you would say, "Honey! The police are here to see you!" If there was only a single uniformed person at your door, you could say, "Honey! There is a police officer here to see you!"
As it is it is OK to say "There is a moron pretending to be the police on this blog and he is no doubt contaminating the gene pool with his bodily essence that is totally devoid of normal IQ DNA."
Blah blah blah blame the Machine
Why not just be glad, and thankful, that a solid

Pay attention to the whole other world outside of your hairgel universe.
Holder IS seeking to repeal the "Truth in Sentencing Act" which effects the Jason Austin case directly, and it looks like Holder may get what he wants as it appears to have bipartisan support.
Outside of your own universe this means that J-rock will serve 4 years, possibly less for this case.
It's very pathetic that your union hasn't kept you apprised of the repeal, because this will essentially give the lower courts the independence to suspend drug related sentences or give felons probation for drug cases; in other words, hard drugs will be decriminalized if need be.
Good luck out there.
