First off, congrats to the new Sgt's that earned their promotion. Second, this post I copied is just a stupid ass thing to say. A promotion is not a promotion, dumb ass. Those people who passed the test legitimatly by score, whether they are an asshole or not, earned their spot. Way to tow the company line there buddy. The point isn't that anyone would accept merit, the point is that the system political and corrupt and needs to be changed in fairness to the entire rank and file.
I have no problem with a working cop, with some time on the job who exhibits exemplary performance who gets one merit promotion. I do however have a problem with seeing totally incompetent individuals get promoted just because they know someone or are a commanders kid. I do have a problem with double and triple merit because that is rigging the system allowing those in power to basically appoint and thereby completely control an entire department and it's command staff. I do have a problem with morale being in the toilet because good cops are continually knocked out of the running even thought they may be more deserving.
Many of us have had to watch this nonsense for decades now and yes for many of us it's hard to swallow but you keep towing the company line.
Ah for those hard working men and women who earned it the hard way, congrats.

More detectives lost. They're dropping like flies. Soon there won't be a detective division left. They can consolidate the D-Unit down to one area! They've made a whole 70 in the last six years. Ponder the possibility that some of the merit will make good bosses and some of the tested might not. At least the Sup does interviews. Cline and Jfled were interviewed and told by others who they would promote. BTW, at least they are finally promoting. Just a thought.
The 4 from 010 are 2 merit 2 grade...good old al strutting around like a peacock in the hallways don't worry I'm merit all the way I got the nod from driving our wonderful commander around and knowing absolutelynnothing about gangs and yet I'm the district intelligence officer. God help who ever gets this guy as their sergeant. The commander flat out said immonly putting Hispanic officers in. The two merit she got made are both Puerto Rican can you say racist I believe so. And she does not hide that she hates everyone else. But once again incompetent promoting other incompetence

Just a little bit too late for me. Should have happened a few years before I retired. That's what happens when you work for so many years for a thoroughly corrupt organization. Low or nonexistent morale and total and complete demoralization.
Daley brought us to this point. Clout did it, influence, you need to know a guy who knows a guy or else have the right parents. Not even the prospect of a promotion could have made me stay. Best wishes all.

Congrats to all, merit or list. Just because someone made it off the list, doesn't mean they are any more equipped to be a sgt. There are plenty "legit" sgts who should not be sgts. They may book smart and they may study and test well, but ask them to think on their feet and make a decision.......and you're SOL. There are also some who are merit, but handle situations appropriately and back their people. Some who will go above and beyond their duties as a sergeant to ensure the well being of their people. So judge each one individually, based on how they are as a person. And no, I am not a sgt, nor do I plan on being one....ever.

I ve been on this job a while, in many different Units. I ve seen a lot of retards get promoted off the list and meritoriously. However, I have also seen some GOOD coppers get merit also. Coppers who didn't score well on the test, aren't good test takers, whatever the reason. Coppers that have put their lives on the line, have gotten shot, Or maybe did something above and beyond. And that is where a lot people will disagree with what deserves to be merit. I ve seen some coppers write, wire after wire, take down after takedown. I ve seen some coppers make that one pinch, which make careers, Like helping to catch a cop killer, or write a wire to help catch a cop killer. Some people deserve to be merit, Simple as that. People on here will never agree on the reasons why. And sure there are strokes out there that make it cause of clout, BUT, some not. From the beat car, to the foot post, to the Unit. There are good coppers all over the place. There always will be. But please, stop bitching that no one deserves to be merit. Instead keep bitching about the selection process or make yourself worth while for being put in for merit.

Why do merit promotions penalize people on the list? If a total of 100 merits are promoted over the duration of the list than the 100 bumped should be promoted before anyone on the new list is. I think that's what the fire dept does. It would cause a lot less bitterness about the promotion process.

The 4 from 010 are 2 merit 2 grade...good old al strutting around like a peacock in the hallways don't worry I'm merit all the way I got the nod from driving our wonderful commander around and knowing absolutelynnothing about gangs and yet I'm the district intelligence officer. God help who ever gets this guy as their sergeant. The commander flat out said immonly putting Hispanic officers in. The two merit she got made are both Puerto Rican can you say racist I believe so. Seems like not so long ago ( hmm 35 40 years ago this dept was all Irish with very little Hispanics) let alone Puerto Rican, and the few that were were bashed like they are right now. Well let me tell you something, today the Hispanics,whether Puerto Rican or Mexican or whatever, have an education and are just as good as the ' good ol boys 'from that other era , and they ( the Hispanics were put down like they are right now.) While I agree with most of your post, the fact is that 40 years ago the Department was not "all Irish." The Irish DID have a majority of the exempt positions and a lot of good jobs but in recent history (50's, 60's, 70's and through some of the 80's), Polish, German & Italian officers made up the majority of the patrol officers. It wasn't until the 70's that Black officers started getting hired and the mid-80's when Hispanics came aboard.
