I assume that all of those knocked off were "merit" appointees.

Can you imagine the conversations between them and their clout...

But Boss, you promised!

I can't go back, I said my good-byes. Not only that I finally told that old fart of a sergeant what I think of him.

Now I hear that the people taken off the list did so at their own request. If that is true SCC that should have been part of the original post else it starts rumors.

This department is now so screwed up that people will turn down the prestiege amd extra pay of the appointment to Detective and stay in what might be a comfortable blue shirt job.

This could also be a sign that some people have some integrity. I'd hate to be an overworked Detective and have to follow orders to lie and downgrade crime on paper.

I believe that six officers, after waiting nine years, decided to waive the promotion, thus the next six replaced them. My guess, based on the one I personally know this applies to, is that if you look up the six taken off the list they will all be close to retirement.

Not sure why 6 people turned it down, you'll be sorry later. Maybe because you live north and don't want to travel south, there are quite a few detectives that live in 16 and work area south and have enough time to bid north but don't because they love working the 10 hour days. You can be a detective and push around some papers and be treated like an adult or be treated like a child and push around a beat car. I take being a detective. By the way your seniority stays the same as your Po seniority. Hope you didn't make a mistake, congrats to the new 6

SCC, I wouldn't blame Ladner or whoever took her spot for this. I made Sgt on the most recent list (by test score). I was not asked if I accepted a promotion to Sgt. I was called by a Lt and told I was on the list. I told the Lt that was great and when do I start. The dept no longer calls you and asks if you accept the promotion. Your name is put on the list. You have to call and decline the promotion. Rumor has it the dept does it this way so that politicians can't find out in advance who is on the list and then have it changed with a quick call to city hall.

After waiting over 10 years, things change. Po's are older, maybe happy where they are, are working days in a good district or are in a special unit.

I can see this if the officers are close to retirement or have a good district, unit or watch and do not want to work nights in the lousy west or south sides. But, other then that? ?? My former partner lived north and hated traveling very far to get to work. Time spent going far to work was time wasted in one's life he felt.

Then he made detective. When I saw he was assigned to 727 E 111th as a detective I figured he would hate that. After a few months I spoke to him. He loved it. Great partner, He worked on homicides, put cases together, put people away for a long time, as much OT as he wanted, but loving what you are doing and who you are working with was key. He loved every second he spent there right up till retirement.

This job is all about good partners and loving the job you are doing. Work with good people and you can work anywhere and not have chickenshit complaints that leads you to post crap on a blog.

This post is starting to lose any credibility...stop the rumor mongering...There is no conspiracy....I am the partner of one of the Officers taken off the list.....He turned it down...in the last seven years things have changed in his life and he cannot afford to change his schedule.....his wife has a very good job and her schedule cannot be changed. It has been a long time since these Officers took the test and I am sure some of them do not want to change their routine or schedule. Every ones situation is different.

What kind of families do you people have where their main concern is a pay raise? Of course I want more money but goodness sakes I prioritize other things first. In fact I know plenty men who have less that have strong families while also knowing guys who do quite well with crumbling families and if they have any at all. Call me what you want...I have passed up money before both on the police and the military side and we're doing just fine in my humble abode.

4/13/2014 10:37:00 AM

Hang on because I'm about to post some crap. I've been a dick since November of 98. I've worked on murders and police shootings since I finished my training. This job blows, but after a while it's all you know; what else are you gonna do? No one is "putting people away for a long time" after a few months of being a dick. You're still trying to figure out how to suspend a Chick-O-Stick fight outside the Arab store. If you clear four murders a year you are a stud in the detective division. I can only think of a few guys that I've seen do that year in and year out. Lots of guys standing around, talking a lot and working the case though.

Congratulations Bartik, McKendry, and all of you on the list. You have the opportunity to make an even greater difference in standing up for the most vulnerable members of society, the young, the old, the weak. May you all have long and productive careers. You do God's work, as do all we in blue.

Nice example of a reply from a stroke. She is retiring next year. Good for her not taking the spot so someone else could.

Right, and just got to the airport yesterday.

it tends to work out. People who want to catch bad guys and send them to prison take the detective spot. Near useless slugs who want to do little or nothing and still get OT while having a very forgettable career take a spot at the airport.

A family member who was a very old retired guy told the younger people at a gathering that he worked on the Speck case back in the 1960's and put many murderers behind bars.

Now, would you rather tell your relatives that or regale them with tales of no ghetto bullshit and how you did little or nothing at the airport for years?

Don't forget your airport discounts now.

You are everything that is wrong with this department. Your "family member" was probably enhancing the facts. Speck was placed in custody at a hospital. A doctor recognized him. Sat there like a shoplifter does. All the police had to do was show up. Not very glamorous. The day you can tell someone honestly that you wouldn't take an airport gig, you can start spouting off.
Until then keep battling the animals. I thank you sincerely for it. But if offered, I'd take the airport.

Yep, all those retired guys tend to rewrite history. If they arrested all those murderers there wouldn't have been room in the cells.
But, the relatives love to hear those stories.
Hate to sound negative, but most of my fellow retirees that were the "police", really don't say much.

Officers in cushy positions and/or units are not in a hurry to return to patrol. Not many detectives look forward to being promoted to sergeant, due to the freedom and overtime. Promote more beat officers! When will this department learn.

*************

See that's the problem... Too many guys out there get off on telling everyone the stories of the big arrest or bust they had. This is a job and that's it. Your life is not work. One I leave work that's it. I lock people up still, I'm on a team still and play the game still. I don't try to impress friends or family about my work stories... I don't care if they want to hear it or not.. It's work and that's the end of it. If I get 20 something years on one day and I can get inside or at the airport you better believe I will take it. It's not about stories, it's about your home life and making the job work for you..

Read again, I never said he arrested Speck, yes, I know, the doctor spotted him and called police. Rumor has it that was at the request of the beat guy who wanted half the reward and split it with the doctor. Ever hear that one? Or the beat guys who rolled Speck for $100 and a pistol?

Worked on the case, that's all I wrote. He worked homicide, I extrapolated that he put people away, that is what those guys who worked out south did.

umm, this job aint all that its cracked up to be. some of us would rather spend our life with our families and enjoying life instead of jumping at every promotion 10 years after you took the test. Didn't work 19 years to get to the district I want, with the watch and furlough I want, to go to the south side on midnights for the remainder of my career. I don't have any clout, and im definitely not a suck ass, I don't owe anybody shit. No thanks, not worth it. don't want to work on cases I don't give a shit about either, To all of you that say, wait, wait, I made $150,000 last year...so what, you were there...hows your wife and kids?? yeah, that's what I thought. This job IS NOT my life. I would of rejected it myself. so many of the people on this job just don't get it anymore...Ive seen the people on this job, and I DO NOT want to be or turn into them. guys that turned it down, good for you, you don't have to explain shit to anybody. I will happily retire a north side patrolman doing NOTHING!!! and for you bitches who will say im a dog..fuck you!!! I worked the black ghetto MOST of those 19 years, so fuck off!!!! now its about me, my family and life. you police believers can have this job, oh and I don't want to hear about your stupid police capers when I see you off duty. :) toodles...

4/13/2014 11:39:00 AM

Good for you. Took the job years ago. Went from a 10-minute ride to work to 75-minutes one way. From May and Nov furlough to Jan and Feb for 9-years in a row. Wishing I would have done the right thing and turned it down when I had the chance. Especially after the closing area 4 and 5 debacle. Most responsibility of any job on this f'ed up department. Not anywhere close to being monetarily compensated responsibility level.

4/13/2014 09:08:00 AM

Pensionable for how long in this backwards state we live in. And $2500? Big deal. $50 a week. Shit money for the bs you have to deal with for the next 15 to 20-years.

I can see this if the officers are close to retirement or have a good district, unit or watch and do not want to work nights in the lousy west or south sides. But, other then that? ?? I was a detective and it was the greatest job I had on the department, rough at first, but still the best and the best memories. I am sorry that I ever took the promotion to sergeant. Now, that was a mistake.

4/13/2014 10:18:00 AM

LOL. Ya from working for a living to being massively overpaid for a living and bored to death with nothing to do.

To those who didn't make it to the airport, Yes the ones that made it will go there and do nothing, get as much OT as they want, and will become....

Uber slugs!!!

But whether you like it or not a good majority of them got there by good ol' seniority.

Until you can too, find simple joy when you can - or eat your hearts out.

PS, please remember some sneak in through management, just maybe you'll be next!

WTF are you talking about. Must be smelling to many fumes. Good majority made it by seniority? some sneak in through management? What planet are you on?
By contract when there are openings at the airport its 50/50 thats half management in case you cant count. That s not by a good majority and a few sneak in,
Do you know why its 50/50 I will tell you. For years and years although it was open for bids there was never a bid spot filled. The city just kept putting in management and after years of no bid spots it got so bad that FOP had to have the 50/50 deal put in the contract. Instead of the normal 80/20 they had to settle for 50/50 because it was better than 100% management and 0 bid.
So stop with all you BS

I too have found the real police say little and if anything, just the fun they had on the job.
The "do nothings" are the ones that tell the "war stories" to relatives that don't have a clue.

I would venture to guess 85% of the Department wasn't even born before Specks day of infamy. Why don't you talk about Bugs Moran while you're @ it Flatfoot.

Yeah, a doctor at County spotted Speck's tattoo and called police, but everyone in Area 2 Homicide worked on identifying who the offender was. A Burglary dick actually was able to identify Speck as the offender. Yes beat guy in 18 relieved Speck of a pistol, but before he had been id'd as the offender. Speck was in a flophouse hotel with a whore. As she was leaving she told the clerk about the pistol and the clerk called the police. If a hundred bucks was also taken, it was kept quiet. Beat guy did spend time in Peoria for the trial. No, I'm not retired, but I can read.
