Near North Non-Security

From a reliable source, three Officers had their personal cars broken into while attending training at the Near North location. Many districts are putting up a "station security"car lately.

Perhaps if the city had actually planned ahead and build secure parking, this wouldn't be an issue, but open flat lots with a 3-foot-high perimeter fence isn't really "secure" by any stretch of the imagination - and Near North has none of that.

Why should officers personal cars have any better security than the average citizen. Besides as police officers they should know not to leave anything with any value in an unattended vehicle.

Gang bangers/offenders park in the 002nd District lot to attend court. Never a PO at either of the 3 entrances, even though the they have it covered on paper.

017 has pedestrians cutting through the police lot all day and night. All they would have to do to stop this is install fencing across the south entrance and install fencing from where it stops by the sidewalk over to the building. Maybe 30 feet of fencing and the lots security would be improved dramatically.

Maybe one of those extra polices who work a few hours a day there splitting up training days should hang around and watch the cars when they aren't telling us how to be the police. Or one of those extra polices who pass out those gas mask only every few hours should be out there watching cars.

This happened during vri as well. The cars were parked in front of the police lot with marked police vehicles. This city is not safe.

From what I hear at near north unit, they have one or two officers with minor paper work. The sgt could assign a officer to patrol the lot once a hour to prevent any thefts. That is not asking too much to save your do nothing spot.

@ 12:14 - It's not an issue of VEHICLE security, but STATION security. It's not unreasonable to have an expectation of security at a facility designed to detain/process criminals, weapons, and vehicles used in the commission of a crime, and/or train the police who use equipment that would be dangerous if stolen. If you're unhappy with the security your own vehicle receives (or doesn't) at your place of business it would be more effective to raise the issue with them, and not here.

Hey FOP...

How about we (this means YOU) insist that all department training be done during/counts as an officers tour of duty. None of this do-half-a-tour-in-the-district-then-take-your-personal-car-to-the-academy-for-four-hours-of- _________-training-then-go-home bullshit.

If this means adjusting the POs work hours for that day/week, then so be it. The department has no problem whatsoever changing my hours to 2/W when I have a weeks long trial or when I'm detailed to Corp Counsel for a week at a time for lawsuits.

All of which means I'll be taking a Department vehicle (IF I can find one!) to said training. Just like going to take a piss test or going to qualify...I've never taken my personal car to these things. Anything department-related will be done on city time with a city vehicle, NOT on my time in my vehicle. Hell, I've had commendations sent to me in police mail rather than attend the bullshit Dog & Pony Show on my own time (I'm not one of the "special" kids that gets carried Code 049 for shit like this).

Long story short: not on the clock and no police car for me to do department-mandated shit? I don't go. No one can give you an order to drive your personal car from 004 to Near North. And if you do so, willingly or otherwise, you're a damned fool.

We too can be victims of property and violent crimes. On a safety gripe, what is the rationale for carrying designer knives on the molle vest or some visible means readily identified by the offender you are going to arrest? Yes, you look hard core like a special forces operator. You tempt your adversary to disarm you and ultimately you are rolling the dice putting that exposed knife into play with your now armed offender. There is always a potential for a gun or knife fight. You bring weapons to the fight. Officers get your head out of your ass and put those knives in your pocket out of plain view. Minimize your risk and be mindful of weapons retention. It only takes one goof wrestling with superhuman strength immune to pain on P.C.P., a stunning sucker punch or someone grabbing you from behind to put your life and other responding officers at risk with the tough looking exposed knife. Be extra careful. You are the police not commandos. Stay alert at all times on and off duty and be safe out there. Remember to search, search and search again. As it was said on Hill Street Blues “Do it to them before they do it to us.”

Remember, we too are not immune from crime and sometimes circumstances are set into motion which put us at risk. The most seemingly innocent citizen encounter could lead to untold dangers.

So should this be one case report for all three officers? Or three case reports, one for each officer as a victim?

If seven cars have their windows broken on one city block, is that one case report with seven victims, or seven case reports with one victim on each?

What if the seven cars are spread out over two blocks? three blocks? four blocks?

And if there are twenty burglaries over four square block area, can we use one case report for all the victims or must we have twenty case reports?

Just asking . . . .

You are a tool. You are lower than a tool. You are a broken, useless tool, that isn't even good enough for the scrapman. I don't leave anything in the car, but my carwindow was broken outside of the police station. We could /should hire private security for our parking lots. As for searches, we were taught, to cuff, then search. Also, search someone even if they have already been searched. Too easy to miss things. You can do a protective pat down, regardless of gender(I am a female officer who has been told by supervisors that I can't search males; I reply that the majority of armed violent offenders are male.)

Just A Citizen says: The NN is no safer than anywhere else quite frankly, if you compare demographics. There are just more non-cockroaches living there (at least for now), so it just LOOKS like it's safer. But it's not really. Go to Water Tower around 1:00 p.m. and ride the elevator. Don't worry about them, they're all good kids…. never mind the neck tats and filth, ignore the hungry look in their eyes as they stake out their next victim. Then take a stroll down Chicago Ave (if you dare) to the McD's and have a look. Ahhhh, humanity at it's finest. Or drive up to Clybourn via Chicago Ave to Larrabee and make a right and look at what you see. Pleasant little stores? happy people? Nope. More hungry eyes, wanting what you have but don't want to work to get it. Face it, it's over. The thrill of Chicago, the whole "My Kind Of Town" bullshit, the people who say "it's such a beautiful city" and all the other excuses people make because they don't have the balls to leave will tell you. All I know is that if I walk over to eat at the Westin (big night out for us) at around 6:00 p.m. and then afterwards walk down Michigan towards Chicago to go back to the birds nest that is supposed to be a home and I find myself clutching my purse and see swarms of the loud, obnoxious cockroaches who have absolutely NO BUSINESS at all in our part of town (sorry if this offends anyone but HARK, it's the truth), then I'd have to say it's just a matter of time before all hell breaks loose on the NN. And no, as a woman I don't feel safe and yes, there is tension in the air. . Maybe it'll happen this summer. But it's gonna happen. And then that's it. Bye-Bye "my kind of town" and hello detroit. And I want to add that the police are out in droves but they can't be everywhere at every second and they aren't babysitters. There aren't enough of them because the majority of the NN people are bleeding heart liberals who feel sorry for the cockroaches (bullshit) and think if they just had more basketball courts there wouldn't be any problems (bullshit) and live up in their ivory towers far away from where stray bullets could get them so they keep voting democrat and then sit there twiddling their thumbs or contemplate their navel and blame everyone else but themselves for this mess. Can't we just have ONE night where ONLY the bleeding heart liberals are allowed to walk up and down Michigan Avenue and the cockroaches can terrorize them? But wait! That won't happen cuz they don't actually live in the real world anyway. They drive out of the city and head up north, or fly out of the city, they don't actually DO ANYTHING that requires their delicate natures to really have to deal with them…… no answer, no solutions, no way back, it's OVER.

A comment from a suburban troll? Yes, many of these police stations are in really crappy areas and cops should have secure facilities. And, you don't have to leave anything in your car to get it broken into which shows you are ignorant to boot. There is secure parking for the police brass you can get on that.

Best car I ever had cost me $200.

Never locked it, didn't care what the neighbors thought.

Settled in accidents on the street 3 times for what the car was worth.

Felt like I was king of the city driving that car. Didn't give a shit about anything.

Find it. Then do us a public service and take out a few dozen of those pedestrian crossing obstruction-posts in the middle of the street. Please!

How many officers park in that lot,so proud to be a p/o that they cant help but advertise with multiple stickers on their windshield and the nice fop medallion so 'prominently' displayed?

4/11/2014 07:20:00 PM

It's a police facility. It isn't the stickers that draw the criminals to the location. It's the fact that it's a POLICE FACILITY. If you think the criminal element doesn't know that and seek it out, you're a fool.

Here's a question for you? Why don't I find out who you are and kick your teeth in? Short memory citizen who blows Rham. We need secure lots so some savage doesn't walk in the parking lot and kill us.......AGAIN. Read below and here's a two part question for you, is it a sword fight over your ass or over your mouth with Daley Or Rham?

Remember we had an officer disarmed and then murdered in the old 007th District lot. The bad guys know who you are, but do you know who they are along with their evil intentions. Keep your head on a swivel. Keep your guard up. Remain vigilant. Don't fall into the trap of tunnel vision. Remember, we too are not immune from crime and sometimes circumstances are set into motion which put us at risk. The most seemingly innocent citizen encounter could lead to untold dangers.

God Bless the soul of Chicago Police Officer Thor Soderberg #14767 E.O.W. 08 JUL 2010. Keep Thor and our fallen Brothers and Sisters in your thoughts and prayers.

You nailed it!!!!! Awesome!!!

Just asking . . . .

Typical shit-ass thinking you got going there...

Not one single cop has any say in how they're deployed but unstead of taking YOUR BEEF to the people in charge (Emanuel, McCarthy) you want to come HERE and shit-talk Policemen and make a not very nice veiled inferrence regarding OUR pensions?

People have gotten their teeth knocked out in real time for what you so cavalierly pressed "Publish Your Comment."

Man up to being wrong...

We get the impression that you like popping off to Policemen because they have "rules of conduct" and are constrained in the response they give you.

Or did a copper hurt your feelings by putting you in your place because you approached like an Almighty Near North Bone Stroke?

Attitude IS EVERYTHING no matter which side of the badge you're on.

"I pay you guys SALARY," is supposed to make Policemen cower in fear from you? GTFOH! Give your wife, hubby, side poke or whatever a finn and ask THEM real nice to kiss your ass.

Kindly take a large shit in your hat, sir.

You're the rude and unthinking kind of asshole who will ambush a copper running into 7-11 to take a piss and berate him because the sky is cloudy in your world.

Again... Your problem is with the people running the show.

As far as Policemen having an attitude?

You're the punk because you failed to avail yourself to the process to address whatever you thought the problem was.

Big bad Mustuh "...The
Tax payer your expecting to help fund your pension."

What the fuck do YOU do for a living? Please tell us so we can drop in on your comment board/chat room and make veiled threats against your future security.

Oh wait... There are rules against coppers doing that.

Smug bastard.

Just A Citizen says: The NN is no safer than anywhere else quite frankly, if you compare demographics. There are just more non-cockroaches living there (at least for now), so it just LOOKS like it's safer. But it's not really.

Don't forget about a contact card! That WILL solve all the parking lot issues.

I have noticed, 014 still has parking lot security, I see them all the time.

Nothing more liberating than a well-running beater car. Nobody messes with them. They can be parked anywhere.

But they do get police attention from time to time, not invisible like a clean Camry or something.

Is it like the academy at Near North? You walk past the gym in the academy and see a couple 60 year old men in "tap out" shorts who have never done a TRR before teaching recruits how to run around some orange cones and use a hool-a-hoop around their waists. What a joke. I hope Callaway makes some changes there. Nothing like old men with Viagra pill popping addictions teaching recruits how to try and be the police. It's pretty pathetic
