Nice Catch Officers
- Seven people, including two firefighters and a police officer, were hurt Tuesday evening in a fire in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.
Emergency crews responded about 6:10 p.m. to the two-story frame building in the 11600 block of South Michigan Avenue, according to Larry Langford, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
Two police officers were in the area about 6 p.m., when they saw people trapped on the second floor of the building, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman. The officers told a 15-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy to break a window and jump down into their arms.
- The smoke was too strong for them to get inside the house, but the two Chicago police officers heard children screaming for help from the top floor.
“At that time, it was just, ‘We've got to figure out something to do to get the kids,'” said Officer Kevin Tate, who spotted the fire while on patrol Tuesday evening on the Far South Side and sped to the scene with his partner, Officer Samanthia Smith.
With the help of a couple of neighbors, Smith and Tate coaxed the 8- and 15-year-old boys to jump from a second-story window and into their arms.
A speedy recovery to all involved. Nice job Officers.

Wife of Villa Park man who died after swan attack files suit
5:07 p.m. CDT, April 16, 2014
"The wife of a Villa Park man who drowned two years ago after a swan attacked him is suing his employer and the condo complex where he tended the swans.
"The lawsuit filed Monday on behalf of Amy Hensley, in Cook County Circuit Court claims an attack by a swan caused or contributed to Hensley falling out of his kayak and ultimately drowning. Along with the Bay Colony Drive condo complex where he drowned, the lawsuit names Hillcrest Property Management and Hensley’s employer, North Barrington-based, Knox Swan and Dog, LLC, which places the birds in ponds as goose deterrents.
"For about 10 years, Anthony Hensley, 37, a father of two, came around the Bay Colony Drive condo complex near Des Plaines regularly to tend to a pair of swans meant to keep geese and their droppings away...
"On the morning of April 14, 2012, one of the swans attacked Hensley, causing his kayak to topple, according to witnesses at the time. The bird continued to lunge at him as he struggled to make it to shore before he disappeared under water...He was pronounced dead at a hospital after dive crews scoured the 50-foot-deep pond to find him, authorities added.
"Using swans to chase away geese is an effective practice, according to bird experts, because swans are larger, territorial and will live in non-native landscapes. They are also not afraid to compete with other animals for resources.
"The lawsuit claims that the defendants “knew or should have known that mute swans are strongly territorial with a dangerous propensity to attack.”
"Amy Hensley’s attorney...pointed to Illinois’ Animal Control Act, which says that the owner of an animal that attacks a person in certain circumstances can be held liable for damages.
"Hillcrest Property Management and Knox Swan and Dog, LLC, did not return requests for comment."

Stay safe. It can come from anywhere. Jeez.
Consummate professionals. I didn't see it in the tribune and the scum slimes newspapers. Funny how that goes
Damn proud of you Officers, damn proud! !
Great Job Officers
Nonsense.
Nice job, Officers Kevin and Samantha!
On camera, they likewise commended and offered well-wishes to the Chicago firefighters as well.
A real class act from "Chicago's Finest."
Great job to all involved, and a quick recovery, maybe after summer back to work? You deserve it to recover properly.
On another note just got my heating gas bill last month was extremely high at $93.00 per therm, now up to $120.00 per therm, this country produces more natural gas and more oil than even Saudi Arabia, why are we extorted so much? Fuel for cars in Saudi premium is 25 cents a gallon. Guess other countries don't have so many corrupt politicians, and yet we are 20 trillion in debt, democrats that's why!
Nicely done.
These officers, like many others each day, put their lives on the line and the crooked politicians like Rahm want to steal their well earned pensions. Simply outrageous. Great job officers.
congratulations on your rescue of 2 children who would most likely have perished if not for your quick thinking and heroic actions--- hopefully your boss will submit the appropriate paperwork so you can add one of those green ribbons to your award collection....
great work
Nice! Great job officers and glad media is lauding police for a change.
That was real talk.
Great job Officers, you used good old fashion ingenuity to overcome the situation.

Read the post, please, before you comment. Officer Samantha Smith is female.
Great job
Its about time we get some good press! Good job officers-you make us all proud. A may the female officer have a speedy recovery. Where can we sign up these officers for our unit’s softball team? Our team looks like jugglers on the field. They are always dropping the ball. Once again, thanks for taking the lead and saving lives and putting the blue shirts in a good light. It seems its only violent news that comes from that part of town. This story of heroism is a breath of fresh air. Get well and get healed officer so you put an end all that slingin.
GREAT JOB!
OT: I'm foot in 007. What's with these sgt treating us like children?! OMG! I did my time in the academy. I worked high school security at Naperville before I got this job. I know what I'm doing! Life saving award for sure!!! Nice job guys
Great job Officers.
A salute out to those heros. They deserve a raise

Looks like J.D and her children were located safely in Wisconsin.
TAKE HEED BOSSES. She can no longer be a member of the Chicago Police Department. You should no longer protect her in order for her to keep her job. She is, and always has been a danger to herself, family and fellow department members. Those bosses "in he know" are well aware of this.
Move to dismiss her now

60 days and a wakeup, and RJ hits the ground running.
Vanecko attorneys seek to dismiss lawsuit by David Koschman's mother
2:10 p.m. CDT, April 17, 2014
"A lawsuit against a nephew of former Mayor Richard Daley in the 2004 death of David Koschman should be thrown out of court because it wasn’t filed within the statute of limitations, attorneys for Daley’s nephew said in a recent filing.
"The 11-page motion to dismiss argued that by law any wrongful death action had to be filed within two years of Koschman’s death, but the suit by Koschman’s mother, Nanci, was just filed last month, about a decade after his death during a drunken confrontation in the Rush Street nightlife area.
"It’s the first of what is expected to be a series of motions on behalf of more than 25 defendants attempting to have U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer throw out the case.
"Daley’s nephew, Richard “R.J.” Vanecko, pleaded guilty earlier this year to involuntary manslaughter for throwing the fatal punch and just completed a 60-day sentence in jail this week. Other defendants named in the lawsuit include the city of Chicago, Cook County, former police Superintendents Phil Cline and Jody Weis, numerous other former high-level police officials, State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and former State's Attorney Richard Devine..."

Just because it took the Apparatus ten whole years to even vaguely concede that there was anything wrong at all...
So when's RJ's pardon coming through? Next week?
The truck that delivers those big gift baskets of fruit is gonna be awful busy...how many more new judges are we going to get here?
Great job!!
The men and women on this job make us proud, very good work, caring for the safety of others and putting yourselves in harms way,Thank you CPD and CFD! Retired Cpd,
What is Jamie duignan's maiden name......hmmmmmmm, I wonder.....
If only some scc reader could enlighten all of us..
RE: What is Jamie duignan's maiden name......hmmmmmmm, I wonder....
Dude just leave it alone. The kids are safe, she is safe and hopefully she will get some help. She obviously has had problems and was removed from sensitive areas. We don't need anyone's laundry, dirty or wrinkled. If you need to gossip, point fingers and make fun of people start with the mirror then move on to the water cooler and therapy groups. Public airing is childish.
Good job guys. Next week the community will be throwing bottles at you all. You think the Rev' out there would have a good word to say about the great work CPD does in the ghetto and receive ZERO thanks.
Sorry I feel this way.
The poor NYPD copper died in NYC projects 2 weeks ago in a fire related incident. The mutt set a mattress on fire cause he be bored. same shit. Sharpon does not have a nice work for white or Latein copper' no matter how they go to the brink to help people.
Nice Job Officers.

I've heard about these useless Y generation recruits. Keep your mouth shut and learn how to do the job.
Nice job officers! Job well done.
Great job Officers. You make this Department proud. Hold your heads up high. You are true heroes. With the few negative acts that are in the press, you are the majority that The Chicago Police Department truly represents. Proud to be a part of this Department. those involved are the true meaning of Chicago's Finest. Your brothers and sisters in blue are proud of you.
These are the stories the press should publish. Police Officer who go above and beyond without a thought for their safety. CPD and CFD, put their own safety on the line every single day. Officers know you saved people who would have never survived because of your quick thinking and selfless acts.
It is a shame that we are screwed over by the politicians, bosses and press. Our Mayor should recognize these heroic acts and keep hiring police until CPD is back to full force. There is no respect for the PO's who really take pride wearing the uniform.
To those officers who saved those children, you have the respect of every PO on the department.
OT: When all else fails, play the race card
Democratic leaders in Washington finally went public last week with what they really think is motivating Republican opposition to Barack Obama. As Steve Israel, one of the top Democrats in Congress, told CNN's Candy Crowley, the Republican base, "to a significant extent," is "animated by racism."

You said it all brother. Been retired for two years and being a senior detective with rank they question everything.
They know shit bout this job and after 2 years they are Dick Tracey !!
I agree totally with you. They are walking CR number' and need to be spared daily !
In the 70, 50, and 90, young copper' keep their mouths shut and learned. Now, they are in Tac teams or narcotics with 3-4 years otj. Nothing good comes of thinking you are the best.
In the old days, a Sgt would not play with you. The old school Sgt' and bosses knew how to play the game with big mouths.
To the Y generation hero, keep walking the beat, you need about another 10 years to earn a spot in a beat car.
To all the brother/sisters with time on, my prayers are with you. Stay sane and do not let the Y-kids trick bag your ass !

Your supervisor is probably the person who saves you from looking stupid when you submit reports that say 'who so you think you are' when they should read 'who DO you think you are'.
And one day, when you grow up, you will learn the skills that will make you a good supervisor, too.

WTF are you talking , about being my boss some day?
Learn to walk , before you run.! What a total. Shit brains
You're. Go back to the F. Rock. You came from Security
Guard from a sub school. You my friend will be nothing , but a worthless. Piece of shit on this Job. Go F. yourself
And all , who're like you.
I'm also on foot but please don't think we're all like this person who claims he/she knows everything. Most of us are out there trying to learn and are willing to learn. Trust me I know I don't know much about the job and I want to learn from the senior officers. This moron gives us all a bad name and even through there are a select few who think they are Gods gift to Earth and that they have this job down to a T, the majority of us are hard-working individuals.

I saw a big fat old slob like you toddle into a joint (I will not name) yesterday just before the Hawks game. The star and pistol were half-covered by that big belly. You are one giant moron, and a good example of how some people grow old with wisdom and grace, others just get old. Learn to spell, learn some grammar, and MAYBE you will earn a little respect. Oh, and stay off the blog when you're drunk.
Yes, some of these younger guys are cocky smartasses, but most of them are great people who decided to take on a tough job - reminds me of the 70's all over again.

Honey,OMG, you did your time in the academy. Thats school, not the street.
I'm glad going to the academy and working security at a Naperville high school taught you so much on how to be a po in Chicago.
As far as this job goes, you are a child and if the report was done right, you wouldn't be getting it back.
OMG,with all your experience, I dont know why they haven't already made you a sgt.

WTF. When you learn to do the job in a correct manner, the bosses will stay off your ass. Sergeants only screw with you when you are a F@ck Up. Having an idea of how you do the job, you will be lucky to be able to supervise a rock. You have to do the job correctly, not the way you feel it should be done. You must be one of those coppers who think of ways to get out of doing your job and just sitting on your ass hiding somewhere.
