Assailant Shot
The headline - "Sergeant Shoots Suspect Resisting Arrest on South Side" - is misleading:
- A Chicago police sergeant shot and wounded someone who fought with police and pulled out a cutting instrument as officers tried to arrest him in the South Chicago neighborhood Tuesday evening, police said.
Someone with a "cutting instrument" is an assailant and deadly force is justified by order, by law and by common sense. You can't expect the media-types to know that, even though we correct them every time and most of them read the blog at some point.
- One of the people "became combative and a physical altercation ensued," according to the statement. He ran into a nearby home, prompting an officer to use his Taser, according to the statement.
The Taser did not subdue the suspect, and a sergeant arriving on the scene "was confronted by the offender in the vestibule of the building," according to the statement.
"The offender attempted to defeat his arrest by retrieving one of several cutting instruments in his possession," the statement continued. "The sergeant, in fear for his life, discharged his weapon once, striking the offender in the right leg."
Nicely done Sarge.

Sounds like it was a clean shoot. My only concern right now is that the officer in question gets any counseling they may need.
And how about the CTA bus driver who acted calmly and professionally in breaking up a fight on his bus and retrieving a gun.
Good for him.

Well done.

"The sergeant, in fear for his life, discharged his weapon once, striking the offender in the right leg."
Ass___e waving the blade was lucky it wasn't "the right ventricle."
Good deal.
Shot?
"Assailant" lucky we didn't have him for snacks the other night -- not bein a deer is what saved him.
That's the way it is done in the real part of town.
The Tribune did the same thing on February 23rd, when the off-duty PO shot an offender after escorting two of them out of a fast food place. Headline read "Off-Duty Officer Shoots 1 After NW Side Disturbance". The fucking offender went to his car, pulled out a gun, and pointed at the off-duty PO. A fucking "disturbance"? This is a definite pattern of complete bias in reporting police shootings. I'm sure there are plenty more.
Here's the Article:
"Off-duty officer shoots 1 after NW Side disturbance"
February 23, 2014|Staff report
A male of unknown age was shot by an off-duty Chicago police officer following a disturbance in a restaurant in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood Saturday night, authorities said.
About 9 p.m., two people began causing a disturbance in a restaurant in the 4300 block of West Fullerton Avenue, according to a preliminary statement from the Chicago Police Department. The off-duty officer, who was inside the restaurant at the time, identified himself as a police officer and escorted the two from the restaurant, according to police.
Outside the restaurant, one of the two pulled a handgun from a vehicle and pointed it at the officer, according to police. Fearing for his life, the officer fired his weapon, shooting one of the two in the leg, police said.
The two people, who were both male, fled in a vehicle but were taken into custody
Once again, never let the truth get in the way of a good story or an even more lurid headline
Simply and well stated, SCC...
"Nicely done, Sarge"
Good work sergeant. Stay safe out there (Job #1: come home in one piece).
btw, That headline is *a bit* misleading and I made that known on the Tribune website. Though I doubt my comment about that on the Tribune web-page will ever appear as my comment is; 'awaiting moderation by the site administrators'.

He did do a great job of that. Where I have mixed feelings is how he told the offender to leave the scene several times. Let's not forget Blair Holt. Had the gun went off ANYBODY on that bus could've been killed. I wasn't too crazy about him recovering the weapon and basically being out of harm's way but telling dude to flee. That is a dangerous job. They better keep a little just in case under that seat.

The offender attempted to defeat his arrest…”

“defeat his arrest”? WTF?
According to the Thesaurus…
The offender attempted to rout his arrest?; The offender attempted to overpower his arrest?;The offender attempted to foil his arrest?
Where do they find news writers? At CPS?

******local Church Bulletin...
Years ago the CPD invited reporters reporters to participate in shooting scenarios at the academy. I believe it was FAST training. The reporters always shot people in situations in which they would not have been justified. They learned how difficult it was to make those split-second decisions. It seems they promptly forgot what they had learned. They can afford to forget, they have no accountability.

It's a term that's been in use for years and years. Relax.
As the time-honored saying goes, "Nothing wrong with shooting as long as the right people get shot".

Yes...and they got into a foot chase with dude when he left the bus and tried to take off on them. I'm pretty close to sure the driver wasn't saying go on outside into the hands of the wiating officers. It sounded more like get out of here before they get on scene to me but hey I wasn't there.
The media should just tell it like it is: Suspect, who tried to stab the arresting officer with a knife, was justifiably shot. Period.
