Carmaggedon

  • "Carmageddon" was set to begin under a full moon at about 11 p.m. on Friday the 13th.

As that hour approached, steady traffic still flowed along the Kennedy Expressway even as workers prepared to close a downtown section of the road to begin a massive bridge replacement project. As midnight approached, inbound traffic started becoming constricted near the constriction site.

The demolition will require closing the Kennedy's inbound and reversible express lanes from about 1 mile before Ohio Street until the Hubbard’s Cave tunnel this weekend. All inbound traffic will be squeezed into two 15 mph temporary lanes that will be built to accommodate the detour, IDOT said.
Gee, it sure would be nice if there was some sort of alternate thoroughfare. Something that ran through the heart of the city as a viable alternative route....two lanes, both directions, restricted parking access. Something like the boulevards....but those were reduced by a bike lane. Or maybe Ashland and Western Avenues....but those were cut up by more bike lanes and median planters. [UPDATE] And Elston! Someone reminded us that Elston used to be the best kept secret to parallel the Kennedy. Not any more it isn't.

And during Chicago's festival season, too.

Don't forget the old standby alternative, Elston, which parallels the Kennedy.
Now it's so hijacked by bike lanes (for the most part these are unused, since bikers seem to prefer much narrower Milwaukee Avenue), it's often backed up and useless.

I drive and/or bike down elston ave. during peak hours there is traffic and non-peak hours less traffic. Also, elston is a two lane street, bike lanes or no bike lanes. Lastly, We live in an urban where there 3 cars to a family and people drive everywhere. What do you expect?

I aint leavin my West Rogers Park neighborhood, unless absolutely necessary. We're pretty much immune to traffic mayhem up here. We need anything, we just jump the northern or western border, and hit Evanston, Lincolnwood, Skokie, Niles, Morton Grove, or Park Ridge.I ain't grocery shopped or bought gas in this over-taxed sanctuary city in years.

The commie reporters on all of the stations talk to the listeners like they are all 3 years old. If I don,t want to sit in traffic I will take an alternate route. Just like when snow is approaching in the winter. They feel like they need to spout there nonsense to save us. Turn it off reporters.

I simply don't give a shit! I can't wait to retire and move the hell away from Chicago! The sad part of my thoughts are, I was born, raised, educated and even work for the City of Chicago, yet I am willing and ready to leave this area for good with no hard feelings! I can't take the weather, the high taxes, the blatant corruptness that never gets resolved at all levels of government! All I have on mind after living here for 50 years is simply: good bye Chicago!

Almost everywhere you go between Chiraq and Killwaukee the roads are a mess now. But, frankly, the need for people to come to the city and pay the wonderful fees to park, sales tax, etc., have diminished. Except for some hyperspecialty shopping, there are plenty of good stores (usually better ones now that the Loop biggies have downsized) here in the 'burbs. Just saw a great performance of Les Mis at the Drury Lane. Rahm and his predecessors have done their best to make it more expensive and less convenient (plus less safe) to come to the city. It's not what it used to be. Milwaukee sure isn't perfect but at least they have a mayor and chief who both give a shit.

So this Carmageddon thing or gas prices means nothing to me.

The nanny-statists running Chicago and Illinois think traffic movement centers around "traffic calming."

Silly and dangerous shit like dedicated bike lanes, median planters, fast yellow lights designed to leave as many motorists as possible caught in the intersection on a red light to feed the revenue beast, unsynchronized signals allowed to exist in a city of this size, etc.

Then there's the normal, common sense "everywhere else" but Chicago and Illinois...

Unobstructed sight lines. Reasonable speed limits, reasonable AND predictable signal intervals, clearly defined rights AND DUTIES for motorists, cyclists AND pedestrians... We tend to like places in where bike & pedestrian vs. motor vehicle collisions, the burden does not automatically default to the "eeeeevil" motorist just because they're "safe" in a 4000 pound vehicle.

(average modern era cars ARE HEAVY because safety standards... Average midsized sedans can weight as much as the monster full sized Police Pursuit sedans of the late 60's, early 70's. The big Dodges and Plymouths were about 4400+ pounds.)

When will common sense prevail against this "traffic control" mindset that makes it so difficult to navigate this city when a major road project is dropped in everyone's laps?

Chiraq is going down the shitter, and fast! It's spiraling down the toilet, like a dizzy turd, while the Mayor Rahm-hole sleeps and does nothing. How long have we had major interstate highways, for the most part with only three traffic lanes? No plans ever for population growth or expansion. Go out near Los Angeles and they're constantly building new roads to accomodate for urban growth. Out there, the attitude appears to be, "Let's take care of the people here". In Chicago, the City's attitude to it's citizens appears to be, "Fuck you, just give us your money". Money to drive, shop, park, walk down the street". What the fuck is next? Yeah, that's it! Shut down the Kennedy "Expressway" (if you could really call it that) just as summer starts. It's always going to be three lanes. The clusterfuck coming into town by O'Hare from the northwest just gets worse every year. This once great city is now a clogged toilet. No innovation in Chicago; nothing to see here, keep moving folks. Time to move out is right! Thanks Rahm!

Yeah, sounds good, Tree Hugger. Have fun on that thing when you get caught in the pouring rain. The coming winter with blizzard conditions, any snowfall over a dusting and -20 degree temps will also be a ton o' fun to navigate on that 'cool thing'.

Actually, I'm no fan of IDOT, but a bit of Googlin' and you can find the details of the project on the IDOT website. Lots of stuff that's not in the Lamestream Media.

Items like: 4 hrs to put down SAND, and a steel plate base to protect the road BEFORE starting construction, then 4 hrs to remove that after construction...

You can even see the worksite on webcam - pretty cool.

They seem to be working fast, and have their shit together so this could be 2 weekends instead of three... Kudos to them for that, worth any extra money we've had to pay...

OK... Why does everyone else has to change and be put in danger with these silly-assed bike lanes, traffic choke points, and lane reductions on major thoroughfares because the militant biker fringe has had two consecutive administrations heeding their agenda to the detriment of everyone else?

Screw you... Testing and licensure to demonstrate competence in operating a bicycle under duress on the public way, a wheel tax, mandatory wear of illuminated/reflective clothing and obey the rules of the road...

Can't understand how a m/fer can be militant while rubbing up against 4000 pound vehicles...

"We have RIGHTS!"
You have duties too...
Goofs...

Helpful hint:
Modern vehicles have LARGE "A" pillars to support the weight in case of a roll-over... Cyclists DO "disappear" from view so try to help the motorist see YOU!

Driving is a chore enough without your death-wish having asses buzzing about not giving much of a shit about your own safety until you're crying and shitting under somebody's car while Police and Fire are jacking it up to pull you and what's left of your bike from underneath...

But you're so sassy and smug, you never took that into consideration...

You want two- wheel nirvana so damned bad, move to South East Asia...

Regards...

SCC, there are no bike lanes on Western or Ashland.

Also, there are 125,000 trips taken by bike in Chicago every day. Can you imagine the increased congestion those were car trips instead? Bike lanes ease congestion overall.

There aren't 125,000 bike trips taken each day.
The majority of bike riders would have been on public transportation.
Eliminating 50% of the vehicular traffic lanes causes congestion.
