Homicides Down

Well, you knew this was coming. Homicides are down since last year....allegedly:
  • Chicago Police have announced that through the first six months of the year there were nine fewer murders than in 2013 and 79 less than in 2012.

Police reported 171 murders through June 29. During that time, the Cook County medical examiner’s office tallied 180 homicides. The difference comes from cases detectives ruled self-defense or involuntary manslaughter.
And of course, deliberate falsification of the numbers as outlined in the Chicago Magazine article about miscounting crime. How many "Death Investigations" does the Department have open at the moment?

In any event, shooting incidents are up:
  • 2013 - 833
  • 2014 - 880 (+47)
Shooting victims are up:
  • 2013 - 1018
  • 2014 - 1103 (+85)
So from those numbers, we can safely say that Contact Cards, ANOV's, home visits and "taking it to the alley" has resulted in increases to the violence totals.

But thanks to modern medicine, Chicago is allegedly down 9 killings for the year. Better response times by ALS equipped fire apparatus and ambulances along with medical advances pioneered on the battlefields of the War on Terror, deserve all of the credit. We'll done!

"To paraphrase Thucydides, words like “borders” and “occupation” have had their ordinary meanings changed, and been forced to take meanings that serve tyranny and aggression. And we who accept those new meanings are complicit in the resulting injustice that follows."

Guest Post: The Language Of Despotism

Submitted by Bruce Thornton of The Hoover Institution,

Long before 1984 gave us the adjective “Orwellian” to describe the political corruption of language and thought, Thucydides observed how factional struggles for power make words their first victims. Describing the horrors of civil war on the island of Corcyra during the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides wrote, “Words had to change their ordinary meaning and to take that which was now given them.” Orwell explains the reason for such degradation of language in his essay “Politics and the English Language”: “Political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible.”

Tyrannical power and its abuses comprise the “indefensible” that must be verbally disguised. The gulags, engineered famines, show trials, and mass murder of the Soviet Union required that it be a “regime of lies,” as the disillusioned admirer of Soviet communism Pierre Pascal put it in 1927.

Our own political and social discourse must torture language in order to disguise the failures and abuses of policies designed to advance the power and interests of the “soft despotism,” as Tocqueville called it, of the modern Leviathan state and its political caretakers. Meanwhile, in foreign policy the transformation of meaning serves misguided policies that endanger our security and interests.

read the whole thing with example after example of the current political realm.

I don't think it can be attributed by better response times by ALS ambulances. Then again, those numbers are manipulated just as much as the crime numbers. Having a paramedic on an ALS engine or truck on scene in 4 or 5 minutes, in the eyes of the CFD brass, is just as effective as an ambulance, completely disregarding the fact that it might take another 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive on scene.

But hey, at least we were able to get an ambulance on scene in 3 minutes for that 20 year old make having a fever for a week a few minutes before. It's just too bad that after that ambo gets committed on that call that chalkie got shot.

Think it's not a big deal? I bet you will when it's one us that gets shot, and we're waiting 25 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

First, homicides running at about one a day and they act like that's the way it's suppose to be.

Next, on average even if one were to consider their numbers are they statistically significant or noise?

Finally, as SCC points out.

Why is it assumed that ANY of Garry or Rahm's initiatives are the causation of the reported changes! First responders and ER docs are getting an awe-full lot of practice/experience.

Why shouldn't doctors, nurses, paramedics be credited for saving more victims instead of Garry's crime fighting B.S.

Neither of these numbers mean a damn thing to the good tax paying working man. What matters is that we can go downtown or out anywhere unmolested. That our children are safe at school and that while we are away, our homes are looked after by enough police officers to make a difference.

The Mayor and the Superintendent have failed at all of these and they are worse because of them. They should both go.

So what your saying is that the 3rd Watch cars should get called in 6 or 7 hours into their tour of duty, and then get sent home so the 1st watch cars can get sent out without waiting? How about bitching that the Department is dangerously short of vehicles and is wasting about 20 manpower hours a day per 3rd and 1st Watch shift; in every district. That's about 900 hours a day city-wide, and doesn't even take into account the additional wear and tear, and fuel on the few vehicles we have left. The commander from 010 may be a stroke, but this is happening in nearly every district across the City. In my District the 1st watch takes out any cars that might be available in the lot, the sergeants get the cars from the 3rd Watch guys who are tied up on arrests and the rest wait for cars. It's usually 3-5 cars a night that are down for a couple hours. The 3rd Watch cars stay out until the end of their shift then turn the cars over. It seems like you're a guy who wants to sit in at the beginning of your shift waiting for an available car, and then wants to get called in a few hours early at the end to give up your car and go home. NOPE! Stay out and handle the jobs, You should refocus your attention on the lack of cars and how they should be making more available for us.

But damn it cops are approaching burnout and these people make mistakes at home and on the job.

Rahm, hire some more police and get rid of McDufass before the BLUE VOTE GETS RID OF YOU.

I saw a short clip of McDufass interviewed on TV today. The "reporter" asked him about murders being reclassified as other kinds of cases. He said that there were two kinds of Crime Reporting system, ours and the Uniform Crime Reporting System that has been around since the 1930's. If we used the UCR System it would be six months before we knew how crime was trending.

I wanted to slap him upside the head for thinking that everyone is that stupid to believe him. We don't use punch cards any more. We have our own computers and can give totals every day and even hourly.

The sooner this goof is gone the sooner we might get a chance to undo some of the damage.

A couple of things

Word is, Al Wysinger has put his nice new house being built in Atlanta on hold; he's telling everyone who will listen that he'll be the next Supt. of Police here when McHeartAttack leaves. As bad as that could be, I can see it happening. Rahm knows he's on some serious bad paper with black voters, having laid off a ton of mostly black city workers since he took office (Ben Joravsky of the Reader has pointed this out several times). Although Rahm has the money people votes pretty much in his pocket, he needs those 'grass roots' votes too.

Word also is that Jim Jackson will stay on as the North Chicago Police Chief. It seems the Mayor bent to pressure from the community to keep Jackson on as Chief, even though he violates the residency rule for police chief for that town (remember, Jackson was supposed to resign by the 1st or 2nd week of May?). Jackson and the Mayor of North Chicago have worked out a deal for Jackson to stay on, they just haven't released any details of it publicly. Surely, the officers of the NCPD will use it if/when that suburb flexes on them about residing in town as a member of that PD.

Rahm, hire some more police and get rid of McDufass before the BLUE VOTE GETS RID OF YOU.

Do you really believe there is a BLUE VOTE? There never has been and never will be one. If Rahm even thought there was a blue vote we would not be 2 years behind on our contract with no end in sight. Thats not the action of any politician treating his voting base.
BLUE VOTE, at least I got my morning laugh.

If you had read other comments on that subject you would have seen that is a get out the vote drive that FOP, PB&PA and IAFF SHOULD start and push hard.

If that were to happen watch Rahm and the Rev-runds say that police should stay out of politics.

I am retired but I make phone calls and get my friends, neighbors and family to vote.

What did you do in the last elections except gripe about them?

Don't laugh.
Register and VOTE.

You are in a very small minority. When 99.9% of your co-workers are glad you are off sick, there is something wrong with you.

The Superintendent is a politician on the wrong side of most arguments for police officers. His surly attitude and arrogance with his subordinates is insulting and his personal life is a mess. There were some big flags the Mayor missed, or chose to ignore, when hiring Mr. McCarthy. The Mayor's own hubris will prevent him from admitting t the mistake, so we are stuck with him.

Don't ask us to like it or play nice with a man that doesn't really care if we live or die. He is only concerned with his political future and the reputation of his COMPSTAT dogma.

I love the comments about McCarthy and how he treats the exempts at COMSTAT. He talks down to them and ridicules them. Then the next comments are that the XO and DC's talk down to the troops at roll call. So instead of the DC's coming back to the districts and treating the troops right, they do to the troops what McCarthy does to them and you blame McCarthy
