Garry McCarthy said in a written statement. “On behalf of the entire Chicago Police Department, our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. The Chicago breaking news reported the driver remained on the scene. I seem to remember an all call over the air saying the driver fled. Was anyone there that can clarify this?
Either way this guy had no drivers license and should have never been driving. RIP brother

driver DID NOT flee scene. he was a 50-something with his children in the car. he tried to change 5 lanes to make the exit ramp at 71st.. either cut off or clipped the PO on the bike. he remained on scene.

If it was an unlicensed driver who caused this accident, all traffic court judges should hang their heads in shame.

To all my fellow officers please please wear proper riding gear an a Snell approved helmet.
I been riding over 25 years, and never without a helmet. In Illinois it's your choice but it's worth the time to strap on a helmet.
I have seen far to many fatal bike.accidents that may have been avoided if only they wore a helmet.
Sure it messes up your hair, doesn't look cool, and sometimes you have to carry your helmet around when you are parked but as I said it is worth the little inconvenience.
RIP my fallen brother.

According to the morning TV news (for however "accurate" they are), this guy had no license AND No insurance.

So he has tickets for no license, no insurance.

OK - how come he doesn't get a vehicular homicide or at least a manslaughter charge filed against him?

I have seen this type of "reckless" driving before and am amazed when Jago}}s like this do not cause a multiple-car accident.

If this guy was trying to "make his exit" and cut across several lanes, he is "in the wrong". What triggers the homicide or manslaughter charge?

RIP Officer Rodriguez.

No Insurance for the car's driver, wunnerful. How do these assholes get plates? You have to put down your Insurance Co name and policy number on the registration form when you apply?

Officer Rodriguez's death is typical of many from cycle accidents, no helmet. It's also typical in that it wasn't his fault, some numbnuts in a car who wasn't looking -- or 'didn't see the motorcycle' -- caused the accident.

I hope the courts and the family of Officer Rodriguez go after this Dennis Anderson mope with everything they can. No Insurance, WTF!

I was working and listening to Zone 6. I don't remember anyone saying the driver fled. They called a 10-1 because the person who called said he was an ODPO because he saw the holstered gun.

So tragic. I'm sorry for CPD's loss. I feel so badly for all who knew and loved TR. To lose him and to have to deal with the fact that the person responsible for his death will not receive the charge of reckless homicide, and therefore, will not receive just punishment? It's unbelievably outrageous. And even more heartbreaking. Please be extra careful out there, Officers. God bless you all.

Sorry and condolences to the officers family and CPD. Tragic crash
But explain How does no license and no insurance equal reckless homicide charges? Would be tough to get a conviction without additional factors like DUI ...

*********************************

To warrant a reckless homicide charge, there must be two acts of "reckless" conduct like speeding excessively while under the influence of drugs/alcohol. The single reckless act of crossing 5 lanes of traffic, coupled with only statutory charges doesn't qualify.

MY heart goes out to the family of this officer. to lose a young man this early in life is tragic, my son is a PO. and rides a Harley, he doesn't wear a helmet in Il. but does when he needs to comply. I have voiced my concern but I find it hard to believe that this State does not require it. I am not at ease when he rides, people don't really pay attention to Bikes.

Godspeed officer, and may god look over your family. I can only imagine the pain they must be endouring. I have 21 years on and I can remember the energy and hope for the future I had when I first came on. I'm sure this young officer would have been a fine police officer. Such a tragedy.

Of course YOU would take a situation like this and try to make it political. A person goes to court for no DL.....they don't get thrown in jail. I guess if you ever got anywhere near ANY court room you might have a better idea what goes on. Blame the judges..... What a jag off

"If it was an unlicensed driver who caused this accident, all traffic court judges should hang their heads in shame"

To everyone that reads this, if you are unable to donate, I'm asking you to share this post. Mannie "Tito" Rodriguez, a great police officer and even better friend has passed away due to a reckless act. I was lucky enough to laugh and work with someone as special as him everyday for the last 14 months. Someone who would run towards what most were running away from, with the only difference being a patch he proudly wore on the sleeve of his shirt. Although, no one can even imagine what his family is going through at this time of hurt, the least we can do is make the finical situation a little easier.

Wake: Friday July 25th 2pm-8pm
Mt. Auburn: 4101 S Oak Park Ave, Stickney IL

Funeral: Saturday July 26th Procession starts at 930, the mass starts at 10am. Church: St. Pius, 4314 S Oak Park Ave, Oak Park IL

If you are able to come out to the ceremony you will see what true brotherhood is all about. Coworkers, friends and myself will take great honor and pride in remembering one of our own.

SCC - I am unsure how to get this to you but I thought that I would at least try. You posted the funeral of Officer Rodriguez being held at St. Pius on OP Ave in OP,IL. I believe that St. Pius is in on OP Ave in Stickney,IL. I wouldn't want anyone trying to attend getting lost or confused. I hope that helps.
