Justice of a Sort

  • Jason “J. Rock” Austin thought he got away with murder, authorities said.

But six years after prosecutors dropped state charges that he’d gunned down an off-duty Chicago cop and his female friend, the 32-year-old drug dealer was finally held to account Thursday in federal court.

Saying it was “very likely” Austin had killed Det. Robert Soto and social worker Kathryn Romberg on the West Side in 2008, U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow sentenced the high ranking Travelling Vice Lord to 35 years in prison.

“You destroyed two innocent lives and deprived their families of their loved ones, deprived children of their parents, friends of their friends,” Lefkow told Austin in front of a courtroom packed with police officers and relatives of Soto and Romberg.

Though they’d had asked for a life sentence, the 35-year term was a triumph for authorities. They in 2008 had failed to convict Austin of the murders after multiple witnesses recanted, but over the course of a week long hearing earlier this month, convinced Lefkow to take the slayings into account when she sentenced Austin for a drug conspiracy.
Expect appeals. Federal time is over 80% if we aren't mistaken...maybe 85% minimum? It's 27 years or so he won't see the streets. This miserable fuck and his scumbags torpedoed the original investigation via threats and intimidation. He was proven to be a community scourge in the worst way at trial and ruined untold hundreds, maybe thousands of lives. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I knew Bob when he worked in 002 back in the day and he was one of the best guys I ever worked with. It's nice to see that after the murder case fell apart that he wasn't forgotten. Nice job by Chief Nick and all of those involved to put the scumbag away.

Cmdr Evans lawyer says he will be exonerated and vindicated. Yea ok good luck with that. Does that statement mean the officers that gave grand jury testimony are going to recant and purjure themselves? I see the officers that went to the grand jury at work and they look sickly. They know the day of raising their right hand under oath is getting closer by the day. Bet they wish they would have been on an arrest on that day he called to help go thru that building.

No public outcry over witness intimidation so a cop killer goes free for a while. This is such a refreshing ending to such a horrible crime and horrible first try at justice

35 years, GOOD! Rot in prison “J. Rock”, you low-life ghetto-trash.

Even at 85% of the sentence that's 29.75 years and the 32 y.o. piece of shit will be about 62 when he gets out. Of course that's *if* he's a good boy and behaves himself.

Or he doesn't die of AIDS or any of the other neat diseases one can get in the slammer. Or die from a terminal case of the most common *prison ailment*: 'Shivitis-In-The-Gut'

They just have to ask themselves, "What would Daley do?"

Then they get the oxygen tank and nasal cannula and take a wheelchair to court. Then they mumble and say things like "I don't recall." "I don't recall what it is that I don't recall." I'm not sure if I recall or don't recall what I just said I don't recall." Mumble, stumble, bumble, umm, uhh, gurgle blurp sig erp burp. Umm, I have to go to the bathroom, I think I soiled myself. Consider this, Daley has not once in his lifetime gone to court and given testimony that shits on himself or anyone close to him. Oh, and bring a drool cup.

Maybe Attorney General Eric Holder will prosecute this brutal cop killer, neighborhood drug dealer scum for a "Hate Crime".

It seems like brutally murdering an off duty policeman and his girlfriend just for the fun of it, that sounds pretty "hateful" to me.

But, since barely "Black" Attorney General Eric Holder has never prosecuted a single Black criminal for any hate crime, it's extremely doubtful he will he'll get involved on this one.

He's too busy teaming up with the Rev. (not) Al Sharpton trying to frame honest policement in suburban St. Louis.

And you were there that day he called for help and know exactly what happened? I hope you made sure to intervene otherwise you're going to get fired for not. Were you in the grand jury room when the other officers were and know exactly what they said? I would like to know how you managed to do that. I wasn't in either of those situations so I'll wait to pass my judgement and even though I'm sure you're some dog ass stroke who doesn't like Evans because he expected you to actually do something and probably called you out for it why don't you wait to see how it turns out before acting like the true police hating liberal ass hat that you are.

I was working CTA special employment. We went on to assist some officers and Cmdr. Evans was there. We had a flat tire and Cmdr. Evans was there and helped me take the tire out of my car and helped us. He wasn't ashamed or thought too highly of himself. This man looks out for his fellow officers. He is in the trenches. He deserves better and I hope everything works out for him. Good luck Cmdr. Evans.

When I saw you signing autographs on Chicago Avenue and taunting us I was upset. Who is laughing now? Have a long difficult stay in prison asshole. You murdered two innocent people.

They did executions at 26th and Cal in an electric chair.

"Cook County Jail was one of three sites in which executions were carried out by electrocution in Illinois. Between 1928 and 1962, the electric chair was used 67 times at the jail, including the state's last electrocution of James Duke on August 24, 1962."

Judge Joan loat family member' to violance. She knows the sadnest of losing someone. Justice was well served by this outstanding U.S. Federal Judge. CPD salutes you, your "Honer."

For all you people that think the Justice Department and the FBI do nothing, wake up folks. Federal justice takes time, that's how they work. If they target a criminal, by anyone, there will be seeing the court rooms at 219 S. Dearborn.

No one is immune, Daley, Madigan, etc if they got them cold in their tracks. All criminals make a mistake sooner then later! Law Enforcement 101.

Regarding Evans grand jury
To the Evans hating rumor mongering.
You are obviously someone that Evans called out in the past.
There are no surprises against Evans case. The officers testimony did not and could not damage him.
The officers did not do anything wrong.
This is not what it seems.
You obviously hate Evans. So be it.
But you're barking up the wrong tree on this one.

Because you see it is the anticipation of knowing you are going to get locked up for 35 years as opposed to living free without a care in the world that slowly cannibalizes the soul, besides thanks to Narcotics there will be alot of people incarcerated with him and they are well aware of who is responsible for them being there. They just might do everyone a favor and take care of the problem for us!
