Extra CPD chaplains and crisis staff will be available starting Monday to counsel distraught CPD families who are unable to pay the mortgage, taxes or kids tuition since daddy went wild over the weekend.

Finally we get the money owed! Wonder how much many will be shorted with the "new math"? Will rahm fund the pensions, maybe the firefighters since they or make that the lapdog union heads endorsed him! Watch the video and what rahm says about firefighters pensions, they watch in the same video his detail blowing red light cameras at the intersection watch man on curb as they speed through intersection, dangerous driving perhaps?
"Go speed racer go?" But rahm says "even though I'm not driving I pay the tickets" when you have people paying you millions in campaign contributions I guess running the lights is ok as long as you pay! "You have to make the law and then break the law it makes it more fun!"

The ultimate asshole, that Rahm is. We should have been able to sign for our checks at our units of assignment. Have the dist. secretaries do something for once and hand out the retro-checks when we sign for it. Now I have to navigate traffic, probably pay for parking, cause God knows I don't have one of those "double disability" placards to get out of paying for "Laz" meter parking.

FYI Brothers and Sisters, the retro is insignificant compared to the pension fund and the looming problems. Rahm hasn't put one cent over the statutory minimum nor has he made any budgetary preparations to make the actuarial required payment due this year as required by law.

I took a look this morning at the last financial statement available for the PABF, our pension fund.

Our pension fund is funded at 32% presently.

At that level the sirens should be screaming and the General Quarters klaxon horn should be blaring. For years everyone has taken this as another problem, oh well, someone will do something.

THIS IS A DIRE EMERGENCY!

I cannot stress how important this is. Does everyone want or expect a pension check when they retire? Is retirement more than ten years away? Then on the present course there will be NO pension fund when you get ready to retire.

And now I am hearing fucking Obama on the radio telling everyone how good Rahm is good for Chicago. BULLSHIT.

Forget everything else. Pensions are everything, nothing else matters. If that goes belly up you might as well figure you will get nothing upon retirement, not even social security. The police will have to start stealing again just to save for retirement.

No joke, this is a real big problem and not enough is being done. Our union should be in talks right NOW on increasing our percentage of contributions from 9% to 13% at least. That is just to stave off insolvency.

Back when I had ten years on our pension fund was funded at the high 70's% level. We thought it would only get better. Then Daley tried to gain control over the funds, Miriam Santos stopped him, she was setup and went to prison and things went down.

And now Rahm Emanuel has this new wunderboy appointed City Treasurer putting our pension money in highly risky derivatives. He is running for City Treasurer unnopposed by the way.

Remember 2007 - 2008? Remember what derivatives did to the economy? The same can happen to our pension fund. One bad move and poof, it can all be gone in a day. That's our pension money!

Forget retro, forget super bowl. Learn about this and maybe losing sleep will spur coppers into some type of action.

We live in an age and time where the government can do whatever they want. They can make up the rules as they go for their benefit as they please. Our pension is fucked and we are fucked. I wish I cared more about the pension crisis, but I honestly don't give a sh!t at this point in my 10 year career (now start typing up your 5,000 word manifesto on why I'm a f@#$ing retard, a 2 year wonder, drinking the kool-aid, or whatever else). But the truth is….Ive got at least another 10 years to worry and lose sleep over pension and retirement issues and at this point in my life/career, Im more worried about the welfare and safety of my wife and kids, not about how I'm gonna support myself for retirement. (before you start on me not caring about my wife...the wife works and will have her own retirement money). I put as much as my family can afford at this time into deferred comp and know that one day I might actually live long enough to retire, but at this point, I just can't put that much concern into this whole pension crisis. Trust me, I work with a handful of coppers who are on their way out and I hear their worries and concerns about the pension day in and day out. I understand their worries and concerns, and get constant flack about why I'm not as concerned as them. But they can't comprehend why I'm not concerned at this time. Id like to ask a few of these Mercedes/BMW/Escalade driving coppers why they're so concerned about the pension and not concerned about the safety of their kids after getting sent to Morgan Park High School because their parents won't pay high school tuition, or concerned about their kids smoking weed and getting arrested all the time. But I don't ask those questions because I don't care about them either. My point isn't that I'm a good parent or not or that certain coppers aren't, my point Im trying to make is that Im not losing my mind worrying about the pension crisis at this stage in the life of my family and a lot of cops just can't fathom why I'm not too concerned. Now eat me alive in the comments…….

I hope the patrolmen are happy with their four hundred new cars and 30 pieces of silver, it's all most of you will ever see. You and your sell-out union representatives didn't have the balls to address the 30% of promotions to sergeant stolen from you and given to the mental defectives that account for nearly all of the exempt members. That's a real raise. Pensionable, too. Look to NYPD and grow a set. When will you ever learn.

You complain that the pension is grossly underfunded. ..you're correct , it is. But look at the clouted and the politicians who received 2 or 3 full pensions. Pensions are funded by taxpayers and I know the taxpayers haven't missed a payment. Aldermen get a full pension for 8 yrs of part time work.. what is Jody weis' pension for 3 yrs?? What will Grau's and schmitz's second pension be for 3 or 4 yrs as head of ISP. Look at the president buyout of college of DuPage. The list goes on. That's why our pension is short.

Now that the (overdo) retro is out, a simple suggestion/request.

I believe that when SCC runs a post of information with the theme of compassion (i.e. police members injured on duty, police vehicle crashes, heroic actions, sick/afflicted members, St. Baldricks etc) we limit our responses under that site to that particular topic.
It disheartens me to see unrelated off topic (OT) remarks under these specific posts.
I realize that there sometimes needs to be a time and place for some non-covered (OT) topics. I'm merely asking that we more closely consider the 'place' where we post out of respect to the topic, individual(s) SCC wished to honor, award or merely inform of a collective need for support or prayers. (My 2 cents.)
Thanks...Stay Safe!

No way. Why should we increase our contributions for a problem the city created? Don't panic, SB3538 will cover the funds even if they have to increase property taxes where all the citizens of Chicago share the burden. Maybe then they will see what the politicians got them into. If we increase our contributions, then the city should increase theirs.
Also as far as the money being due in 2015, its not due until 2016 because the property tax are paid the follwing year.
If you worked for private industry and they were supposed to match your IRA funds and didn't, do you think the answer and remedy would be to increase you contributions almost 50% to solve the problem. Absolutely not.

true that is why before I got my retro, sat down with deferred comp lady (really knew her stuff) told me to put $6,000 in deferred did what she said recived $3100 paid small amount of taxes, some guys in my district paid 30-40% in taxes which as we all know you wont get much if any back from fed! max out or put as much as you can in comp the only hedge we have! Im retiring in Oct have over $500,000 deferred (Not bragging just a fact) Start early the years pass so fast, i worked lots of special and part time to put my 3 kids through private grade and high schools paid almost all of their college off!

You want to have a good family life? GO HOME after work enjoy the family,if your passing money over the bar your taking from your family not a hard concept!Wife works also makes 1/3 of my salary!

Please go to the 14th district/ 3rd watch and wear a body camera with them. You deserve it. Start caring about others and help solve any number of problems that you mentioned. Your attitude of not caring also tells me that you don't know who any number of your elected officials are, thus giving the upper hand to corruption. Your important to solve the pension problem! Make a few dozen phone calls and go on a few marches, you would then understand the importance of union involvement. Start caring.

Typical copper answer. There is the world we live in and the reality that is in front of us and then there is what should have been, that is over, mistakes made years ago compounded, no one did much. Now is crisis time. Sit there and keep saying "Absolutely not" and hold your breath why don't you. I am figuring that the city matched the contribution increase.

"Absolutely not" The fund is at 32% It "Absolutely" should "not" be at 32% but IT IS!

So I can tell my wife I got 3125.14 when in reality I got 5934.76. Ya see the game here sonny? Some for her and some for me.. See, if you tell the wife the full amount she gets big ideas how to spend it all.. So go ahead honey, spend the 3100 because the rest of it unbenounced to you will be somewhere safe with me for toys

Good thinking. Instead of all the complaining and whining, put a good spin on it. I like your thinking.

Impossible. We are so unlike them. Just ask my new privates that are mad because they were "supposed to be" promoted months ago. I worked in social service before and my liberal white boss lady trained me how to tell people "your are entitled to these benefits." That is American culture these days. Tell who don't feel entitled to something..seriously.

Are you fucking kidding me. $500,000
in deferred comp, put three kids thru private grade and high school plus paid off three college tuitions on a policeman's salary. Paying a mortgage, putting clothes on your family, feeding your family, car, gas, insurance, etc. Either your lying, wife worked or you found shoe boxes filled with money.

Start w/Deferred as early as U can. Contribute as much as U can especially if U don't have Wife & Kids. Max that out if ya can. $18,500 is the max this, but don't quote me. I've been maxed since almost the beginning of 2006 and holy shit does it grow and in no X U won't miss the $$$$ contributed.
Uncle Sam has his hands tied as U'r check drops. U'r deferred contribution is taken out FIRST, then Uncle Sam takes what's his.
Please, younger POs that's the way to play it & how Def Comp works. Start a "Watch List" available on any MSN, Yahoo, or Google news finance category, throw in the funds or single securities for that matter, and make an educated decision on where U'r money is allocated.
Those of U that have a Roth or individual acct already know about the "Watch List."
Please help urself out & call Nationwide to put in as much as possible given U'r situation.
U'r body is on borrowed X & U won't want to run & gun U'r entire career.
Money's best friend is time so use U'r youth to U'r advantage.

You wasted all that time typing up something you could have said in 1 sentence.

"F all you guy's and gals I only care about me, my wife and kids."

Guess what there slick? We don't give a flying rat's ass about you, your crotchety bag of a wife and 2 asshole kids."

Got it? Good, now go fuck yourself!

No joke, this is a real big problem and not enough is being done. Our union should be in talks right NOW on increasing our percentage of contributions from 9% to 13% at least. That is just to stave off insolvency.

1/31/2015 10:15:00 AM

Typical copper answer. There is the world we live in and the reality that is in front of us and then there is what should have been, that is over, mistakes made years ago compounded, no one did much. Now is crisis time. Sit there and keep saying "Absolutely not" and hold your breath why don't you. I am figuring that the city matched the contribution increase.

"Absolutely not" The fund is at 32% It "Absolutely" should "not" be at 32% but IT IS!

You guys are dreamers. Lookk back in the citys history. Everytime there was a tax increase or increased fines that were supposed to be to solve a financial problem, the taxes were increased and the problem was never eliminated. All the city will do is increase your contribution, but wont increase theirs. Dont be naive CPS increases their property tax levies to the max and have for decades and has the school system gotten better. No. State raised state income tax to 5% for 3 years to improve state finances, they have only gotten worse. Give a politician money and he will spent it, but never on what it was intended for. So go ahead and be a follower and agree to an increase and see what happens.

I agree, but keep in mind a few things. When you decide to take that $ out, figure at least 20% goes to the feds now.Take out 10K, get less than 8K back. For the amount of $ we put in, there is absolutely no direction from Nationwide. You are on your own.Oh yeah,I realize they run a seminar or 2 during the year, which is usually dated info.Seriously think of putting that $ into a fund with someone like an Edward Jones agent. They stay on top of your $ and where it's invested, and they only make $ if you do.Wish I had started with them long ago, and shit canned Deferred.
