Here's a Clue - Drop the Blade (UPDATE)

We watched a plow go by the corner house earlier today. Funny thing though - the street was still covered in snow, but now it was a bluish tint. We drove through that intersection on the way to work and it was horrendous. So were all the other streets we drove past.

We observed many comments in the "Streets Still Suck" post and a good many comments related pretty much the same thing - plows driving with the blade up. So we followed a plow at work today and guess what he wasn't doing? If you guessed "plowing," give yourself a pat on the back.

We trying to figure out how widespread this is and why it's being done. We can only conclude it is occurring on a massive scale across the city in most neighborhoods due to what we've observed first-hand. As to why:
  • speed humps
  • traffic circles
  • save money on sharpening plows
  • save money on damage claims against the city
  • save pothole creation for the thaw
  • it'll melt in 2 months anyway
The main thoroughfares are clear, but the places where people live, not so much. Too bad if they dug out a parking spot by tossing snow in the street - plow the center lane and they'll learn to throw snow on the parkway. Hey Charlie, you were an asshole at IAD and quite possibly the worse Chief of Patrol ever. Now you are without a doubt the worst Streets and San stupid-visor in memory. Congrats.

UPDATE: Oh Charlie, you silly whore:
  • The stretch of West 51st Street is far from Chicago’s busiest road, carrying only two lanes of traffic and dead-ending before Pulaski and the CTA’s Orange Line tracks. Still, the 3900 block of 51st got lots of attention from city snow-removal crews during and after last weekend’s intense winter storm.

The plows pushed through the block as early as 6:48 a.m. on Sunday and again at 10:31 p.m. that day. They returned two times Monday and gave a fifth sweep on Tuesday morning, according to city Plow Tracker data gleaned by clearstreets.org.

You see, 51st is where you’ll find the 5,600-square-foot home of the City Council’s longest-serving and most-powerful member, Finance Committee Chairman Ed Burke, and his wife, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke.
Such a tool who wanted nothing more than to fuck coppers over, again and again. Remember those speeches Charlie?

Hey! Guess what? The blizzard was two days ago and my street still fucking sucks. Plow and salt went down this morning at about 11:30. Looks the same as the night of the blizzard. They just made it look good for the plow tracker website that shows their GPS. It LOOKS like the plow went down our street, but that's all it did..drove down the street. What gives? Please do NOT vote for Rahm Emanuel when election day comes. He doesn't give a good god damn about you, your block, or anything else.

we had so much snow that the bottom 1-2 inches is densely packed snow or ice. dropping the blade will do nothing. throw the salt down, let it sit for a few hours and let it seep down to the pavement causing little cracks and openings. then you can loosen it with the plow blade. wait too long and it will refreeze. ive plowed snow as a side job for 28 years. believe it or not, its just not as easy as dropping the blade down and pushing the snow.. yes, its a huge part of it but with this volume of snow, narrow streets, cars parked on the side and every idiot on the block piling snow in the middle of the street instead of on the grass parkway make it extremly tough. the snow has to get scooped up by front loaders and moved somewhere. very hard to move this much snow in an urban area. so take it easy, the job is much harder to do than you think.

Plows care about speed humps? Figured that lump of crap would just get a loud "bing!" and cut loose...

Sharpening the plows? Never heard of that... doesn't make any sense.

I see lots of plows driving around with the blades up - from competing departments - some union crap about saving the work for someone else? So they travel from point A to point B with the blade up? WTH... just get it done.

Rahm ought to get familiar with the name BILANDIC... his name's gonna be on the list of dumbass Mayors kicked out because they F'd up a snow storm...

Chicago Winter Rules:

* You dig it out, you get dibs on it, or someone gets a chair through their windshield.

* Mayor makes sure that Streets and San PLOW everything so the City can Work.

Violation of either has severe consequences.

Welcome to Chicago. Enjoy your stay.

I am in Norwood Pk East (Arena 45th ward). Saw the plow 4 times. They just go down the middle of the street and do not push the snow to the curb. In doing this when they get to the intersection they leave big mounds of snow there. So when cars attempt to turn they get stuck in the snow ridge. I live on the corner so I have seen over 20 cars getting stuck. It's best not to turn if you see a mound. They need to push this slush into the corners. Years ago they did a much better job.

Plow came down my for the first time block (008th Dist - Westend - 13th Ward) at 2130hrs Monday.
Came back thru three times on Tuesday. For a total of 4 passes.
None of which the plow was on the street. Last two passes he dropped blue salt. Street is still a mess and cars are still getting stuck because the plow never attempted to push the snow out of the street!

I hope people remember this come election time.

Residential street that has magically turned blue and full of slush, not plowed once, and it's what, 4 days after the storm? And all the streets next to mine aren't plowed except the main ones. At least I got a hell of a workout with that shovel. Thank God for my hipster hating gas guzzling monster truck.

Here's a question maybe rahmbutt can answer. Everyone remember the warnings of parking on snow routes and all the people who got a surprise on the first day of enforcement bright and early on that snow free morning as they went out to find their car towed? Why is it on many clearly marked snow routes are there cars parked buried in snow and not towed? Maybe leovy & leovy should consider a lawsuit on behalf of everyone who had their car towed when there was no snow on those routes

I remember the 1999 and 2011 storms and the city contracted out construction companies to have front end loaders plow the streets. The city plows would then come by plowing and salting.

I live on the corner and I saw a plow go down the busy east-west street at least 10 times the past 2 days (that's just the times I saw it). It was plowing and salting. The road was still a mess.

The less busy one way street the plow went down about 4 times. Even worse - you could imagine.

I'm not really sure what's going on.

Years ago, a buddy of mine who drove a garbage truck (and plow during the winter) explained it was all about overtime. They would be assigned to plow main arteries and they wouldn't stray from that even though they were clear.

They were only allowed by Federal law to drive for 12 hours, then they would call them on their radio to return to the S&S yard. Well, at this point they'd just not answer the radio for a few more hours.

Sometimes, he said, they'd pull over somewhere and go to sleep. They'd never get in trouble if caught because their union would argue that if they had continued to drive, they could kill someone.

Things are probably different these days with the GPS and dash cams on the plows but I'm sure they've found ways to beat all that stuff and still keep NOT plowing and still get paid.

from alderman Matt O'Shea:

I've read a number of comments and gotten a number of e-mails about plows riding with the blade up. Just spoke to S/S and asked them to clarify this issue. They inform me that in some instances, when the temp. is very low, the snow is highly compacted and forming an ice layer, a plow needs to go over the street with salt only, allow some time for the salt to break up the snow, and return with the blade down. S/S is going to remind the next group of drivers that come on shift to operate with the blade down as much as possible. Our truck drivers and city workers are extremely dedicated to making our streets safe; many of them have been working long hours to get this very big job done.

take it for what it is

They're not plowing the side streets because with this much snow, the parked cars will get buried in and the wall of snow will freeze. That would piss people off even more, so Rahm is counting on the fact that people would rather shovel a little and to push a car out of a rut that dig it out of a frozen bank of snow created by the plows. Salt and sun will eventually met it and his problem is solved. His is a manipulating little fuck isn't he!

Great job by ed burkes house, just got my street plowed (LOL) if that is what you call it, right down center of street, going fast pushed all the snow back into driveway, went through the little village of Summit,IL west of harlem plowed curb to curb, and they had workers shoveling out senior citizens walks! Nice the taxpayers there are getting some value!

Why plow those Northwest side neighborhoods? Most of those folks got their own snow blowers, let them clear it themselves. The low income areas need plowing first. (anything west of Harlem gets last plowing)

I think it's just the stupidity of the drivers. I called the streets and sanitation dept office today and the woman who answered the phone actually checked with her supervisor to find out why the plows in mt greenwood were only salting side streets with the plow up.....she got back on phone and said they are supposed to be plowing as well as salting. She asked for the truck number and said she would send truck back with plow down. Shockingly, the plow came back with plow down!!! However the driver only plowed the 2 ends of our block with plow down, maybe she was afraid of hitting a speed bump and that's why the female driver avoided plowing the middle of the block. We don't have speed bumps and if she could read, she would've known that- since there aren't any speed bump signs.

seeing alot of posts on facebook about neighbors paying streets and sans drivers and water department plows (the smaller trucks and pay loaders) to take care of their streets side to side and alleys.. hmmmmm, taking money from citizens to plow certain streets and areas. I know this is chicago and all and I know that its not a big deal because its just a snow plow driver but if any copper took 50 bucks to do anything small or big we would be sitting in federal custody. also, to the idiots (some of who are coppers) stop posting on facebook that you paid off the plow guy to take care of you... Your a police officer idiot!!! and your putting on social media how your doing payoffs to city employees. I would take it down incase your getting sued at work or a lawyer is getting ready to get sued in the near future. Civil attorneys troll your facebook months in advance before they even file the suit in order to get as much dirt as they can.. thats why at your first meeting with your attorney they tell you to delete your facebook or get rid of anything embarrassing. some people just dont learn.

It was understood that the side streets were unable to be plowed.

We worked together, pushed out neighbors, cleared out around the neighborhood parish

We had to shovel our roofs, people with snowblowers volunteered their machine

Relax people, it's a snow storm, if it won't kill ya it will make ya stronger....deal, adapt, overcome.

we had so much snow that the bottom 1-2 inches is densely packed snow or ice. dropping the blade will do nothing. throw the salt down, let it sit for a few hours and let it seep down to the pavement causing little cracks and openings. then you can loosen it with the plow blade. wait too long and it will refreeze. ive plowed snow as a side job for 28 years. believe it or not, its just not as easy as dropping the blade down and pushing the snow.. yes, its a huge part of it but with this volume of snow, narrow streets, cars parked on the side and every idiot on the block piling snow in the middle of the street instead of on the grass parkway make it extremly tough. the snow has to get scooped up by front loaders and moved somewhere. very hard to move this much snow in an urban area. so take it easy, the job is much harder to do than you think.

Napalitano spoofed endorsed by the Onion - some guy from the "Opposition News Network" spoofed Napalitano with a fake endorsement. Saw him at a forum. He has no clue. Move on. No one to vote for in the 41st Ward. Lost cause.

Sir - I would of parked in the garage but my two ski- jets and my boat are in the garage. Paid also from my Retro check.
The pound idiots told me I cannot get to my totaled BMW without coming up with $ 700.00 cash. My insurance company, "Comet-Mercury." told me they are not paying till the city settles the claim. Now I will get the city to pay me twice the price of my 45 K BMW. My lawyers from Bridgeport will sue them and the fat Charlie W' for towing me. I know my rights ! I am smart and did not make FTO for being dumb !
