- Lt Johnson (not that one, the other one) from 003 to Acting Cmdr 005
The "acting" portion gets dropped after the next City Council meeting we suppose. Here's a question though - why do Rahm and McCarthy hate Cmdr Watson? They're paying him less than Deputy Chief of the 007th District Ric Flair to do the same job that Leo had for years. Is it because Watson is....black!?!?!!??!

"Two Marked Police Cars Torched in Florida
Police responded early Friday morning to a home in Northeast Miami-Dade, Fla., where two marked police cars parked in the driveway were apparently deliberately set on fire, bringing the count up to at least four incidents of area police cruisers being vandalized this year, reports the Miami Herald.
In January and February two unmanned Miami-Dade police cars were sprayed with bullets. No one was hurt in any of the incidents but the deliberate targeting of police vehicles has raised concern at a time when tensions between law enforcement and the public have been flaring up across the country.
Friday’s incident involved one car belonging to Miami-Dade police. The second car is a Hallandale Beach police cruiser. The fire caused significant damage to both vehicles. The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating the cause. "

Years ago when there was still a sense of propriety and decency an asshole skirt chaser such as Roy would have been dumped to 011, or 002 instead of rewarded for his little peccadillo with the trollop in 009. Especially when the bonehead was cheating on his wife who was heavier than he was. That was then, this is now and it's another reason the Department is in turmoil.

How would they know if the ten hour days would work or not if they didn't try them? There is no master plan to give everyone the schedule. A boss at 35th thought the po s would like it so he tried it. Some like it some don't. At the end of the year it will be evaluated and either continued or stopped. It can't be implemented city wide as a two watch schedule due to the contract.

Calls would have been made, and he/she would have been catapulted...but it was NEVER gonna happen in016, period. When I came on the job, just about every so-called black community has a white commander, and nothing the community had to say was going to move them out, period. Chew on that for awhile.

So, not only do you think someone at 35th came up with the 10 hour schedule because they thought we would like it, but you also think they give a shit what the contract says? The 10 hour schedule exists solely because it could save the city money if implemented on a larger scale. Nobody cares if we like it. As for the contract, explain to me why there are still books with lists of names of those allowed to have a day off, with only a specific number of people allowed to be off each day. I didn't see that in the contract. Manpower fluctuates from day to day, depending on day off groups, yet the number of people allowed to take time due is a fixed number. That not only violates the contract, but it also makes no sense, especially if they try to use the manpower argument to try to justify it.

If a female is best qualified for a position, I'm all for putting her there. However, putting a female in as a boss simply to better "reflect the community," is ridiculous. The "community" is made up of all kinds of people, including illegal immigrants, mentally ill homeless people, violent criminals, extreme racists, drug addicts, etc. I don't feel like those people should be represented in the police department. Police bosses should be those who have shown an ability to perform the duties required by the position they're given. If you want a black female face there, or a Hispanic dwarf, or a blind, transsexual, Japanese fisherman, just because of how they look, or to appease the "community," you're not actually accomplishing anything. Put the right person for the job in that position, regardless of race or gender or any other nonsense. I realize this will never happen, but I can dream. You're arguing both sides by bringing up who's better qualified, while also advocating putting a woman in to better reflect the community. You can't have it both ways, at least not without sounding like a moron.

I really don't know why anyone would not want the 10 hour shift. you get 3 days off and every 4 week you get 3- 4 days weekends. and face it you people out in patrol never work 8 hrs. instead of your required 8 and a half hour tour, so you may put in 1 extra hour but the benefit of more continious time off is great, I worked them for 7 years and loved every minute of it, we coppers are creative and will find a way to make the 10 hour day work to our benefit!!!!!!!!!!

Retirement check should be based on the last rank that a person was Promoted to by passing a Test , not Meritorious Promotions , appointed promotion to XO ,Commander , Deputy Chief Etc . Only the Superintendent should receive a pension based on his rank but on the average pay of his /her lady ten years of service .
This would be a huge savings .

Commander Staples is one of the finest people you will ever meet. She is kind and very knowledgable, and knows how to treat people. I had the good fortune to work for her on both of her tours thru Area Four and she is a great leader.

To the commentator who equated women to the homeless and mentally ill, you are a moron. There are plenty of qualified, intelligent women, who can and should be mentored. To not do so is a disservice to the department, and the citizens. We need the most qualified, but it seems the dept. Does not seem interested. It is a shame it takes a court and quotas to do what's right, but it seems they won't do what's right without it.

Former A/4 guy here and now an A/C guy. Couldn't agree more with the above statement, but we also wouldn't mind having Duffin back here as commander. They are cut from the same cloth! Both good people who know what they are doing.

Couldn't agree more. Only a dogass would have an issue with her.
Please if you think for a second that staples is good you are a bigger goof. She is useless. Worst commander. Smart knowledgeable are you kidding me. At what? Wait I know. Working from home. She sucks. It's hard to tell people they are denied time off when you yourself are never in. Just please move on. She has bitten that merit apple little to much. A good commander would have been retired captain carroll. That was a boss. Ask the guys in 12.
Melissa Staples is as genuine as a person could be. She would be the exact same person if she was the janitor. I also have worked wit her both times she was in A/4. Speaking of A/4, Staples was the only person to stand up to Peterson when he would be having his meltdowns.
She has a saying, "always do the right thing, even when nobody is looking" and I have personally watched her practice that the entire 15yrs of knowin her.

I really don't know why anyone would not want the 10 hour shift. you get 3 days off and every 4 week you get 3- 4 days weekends. and face it you people out in patrol never work 8 hrs. instead of your required 8 and a half hour tour, so you may put in 1 extra hour but the benefit of more continious time off is great, I worked them for 7 years and loved every minute of it, we coppers are creative and will find a way to make the 10 hour day work to our benefit!!!!!!!!!!

Where did you exactly work those magical 7 years you speak of and i'm guessing it wasn't to usual beat car grind ?
These awesome days off are great but the hours really suck. Im not lucky enough to work days so the afternoon shift is really would feel like summer style vri or working midnights. By the time you get home, your sleep is all fucked up and you are a zombie. Your days off come and you get your sleep back to normal to do the switch again.
Ok - promotions are fixed - look at the LT test announced in October and it's now middle of March ! sgts association initiate a lawsuit and the answer they get is " now second quarter " . This city is a joke .

You should probably read what I posted before calling me a moron. I didn't equate women to the homeless and mentally ill. I flat-out said "If a female is best qualified for a position, I'm all for putting her there" and "Put the right person for the job in that position, regardless of race or gender or any other nonsense." Since your reading comprehension skills aren't up to par, I'll assume you won't understand it this time either.
Also, if you feel that quotas are the proper way to fill police boss positions, you're even dumber than your lack of reading comprehension skills would suggest. Quotas put someone in a position based on race/gender/sexuality/etc. with no regard to their actual ability to perform the job better than another candidate. Quotas prevent the most qualified people from getting a position, while also putting someone else in their place, simply because that person happens to be a different race or gender. That's unfair to both parties, and does a disservice to the department and the citizens. Would you honestly like to tell everyone you were promoted to a certain position simply based on your race or gender? If not, you don't really believe quotas are a legitimate means of determining who should fill a position. If yes, then you're beyond help.

Yeah, we all heard about those "10 hour" days you worked. How many of those were actually 10 hours long? How many of them were spent responding to endless domestics, crashes, shoplifters, mental disturbances, people shot, etc.? How much paper did you write in those "10 hours?" How long was your lunch? How easy was it for you to get days off? How many responsibilities outside of work did you have when you worked those "10 hours?" Your "10 hour days" aren't the same animal as these 10 hour days. Acting like your experience translates directly into regular patrol is unrealistic and ridiculous.

Carroll was what? Carroll was a nice enough guy, connected Irish to the extent he was an appointed bullshit captain but not connected enough to get an exempt spot, nothing more. Staples is smart and has more scruples than any Irish boss. Trust me, Vanecko would have been in the penitentiary a long time ago had she run the original investigation instead of the all Irish bosses and outfit lackeys who tried so hard to undermine the investigation, for profit. As far as your time due, you petty little man, thats up to your watch commander, or WOL, or whatever the fuck McCarthy calls them, or Irish Deputy Chief McNaughton who denied time due last weekend because his countrymen can't be trusted to drink and act civilized (sort of like Bud Billiken). Try bringing in a hot car, UUW (real working firearm), burglar or armed robber and you won't ever have to worry about being denied time due ever again! Ask the guys in 012 and they might say you're a softball.

Lets say a teacher gave u a "C" instead of a "D" you had coming, because teacher knew you were a bad test taker but you demonstrated in class you knew the subject. Or getting out of taking a breathlyzer because you are the police, etc...everyones gets breaks-some at work, others somewhere else.
Gene Roy has always been a stand-up guy that cares about his people, and is a good boss. If you don't like him, maybe you're a do nothing dogass. He is also extremely knowledgeable and has a ton of experience in the D-unit, he's paid his dues for a very long time. And nobody should be talking shit about Riccio either, another great guy, old school stand-up boss. So quit your whining and go pound some sand.

You obviously are part of his clique. You must be related, or close to, a politician who Gene feels could do him some good.
When is the department going to merge 20 and 24. Also combine 14 and 12. That would give the city 20 districts. Renumber them, make 25, 13 and 22, 14. Also, make 10 even zones. Put 2 with 3, 9 with 12, 19 with 20. Less dispatchers, commanders, lts, sgts, etc.
I hate the concept that assumes that men are the best at any job, and that if there are men in the top positions, and no women, that means that there are no qualified women. That I'd simply not true. They need to post the test scores, and also give test scores to the candidates right after they score the test. Years ago it was shown that women performed well on the written tests.
There is a definite bias against hiring and promoting women in this department, that is an issue that needs to be rectified. That does not automatically mean they are less qualified, just that there is a problem that needs to be corrected. There should definitely be more transparency in the hiring and promotion process.

There is no class on the planet earth that you would earn a "D' in and demonstrate a knowledge of the subject matter. Classifying a merit promotion as a break for a person who was not shot is stretching it. Very few of the people who are promoted via merit have ever done anything extraordinary. Most are below average to flat out shitty coppers(earned a D) with a Chinaman(turned it into an A).

Understood point well taken. Bad example given, bottom line is that on this job or the private sector, there is always some sort of merit / favoritism going on. Hate to say it, but its like racism- it'll always be here, in some form or another.

Only a lowly P.O. , but rumor has it over 80% of our command staff were promoted meritoriously to sergeant, lieutenant and captain . It doesn't seem fair . If any one has information I'll make it easy . Please post names of all current commanders that have NOT been promoted by the merit politically system . Please post answers .
