Nice Letter Chief
In a town meeting type scenario, police bosses are usually told to sit there, shut up and take the abuse heaped on them by the community. This happened in Madison recently following the shooting of yet another unarmed assailant (who is unarmed only as long as you keep control of your gun). The Chief did as his political masters demanded, but fired back the next day:
- As the City has been through a lot over the past 10 days, an uneasy peace has settled in until we await the next seminal decision from the District Attorney’s Office. The tension on the streets is palpable and my officers are doing the best they can to remain pro-active and relational. Not an easy task given the various veiled and stark threats to police officers that have been made through various social media networks and on the streets. I have challenged my officers to stay true to our values, adhere to our training in situational awareness, and to resist the urge to adopt a “bunker” mindset. The women and men of MPD have done more than their share of risk taking for this community and it is high time you did yours!
In the course of a few days (from March 13-last night’s Common Council meeting), I have seen you muster to create a letter to the family of Tony Robinson as well as to hastily convene a public “hearing” for those who want to express their views. While the letter of condolences to the family of Tony Robinson was entirely appropriate (I did the same thing), there was no mention of support—either in that letter or in any corresponding letter which could have been circulated at the same time—acknowledging the exceptional steps taken by women and men of MPD in doing their part to maintain public safety while facilitating robust dissent. Last night, I sat patiently listening to people accusing MPD of everything from being sanctioned murderers to racists. Given the nature of the proceedings, I was left with no recourse to respond to any of these diatribes, falsehoods and shock value missives. One of my responsibilities is to defend those valued employees—sworn and non-sworn—that take pride in providing a premium service to the citizens and guests of our City. People can attack me all they want—I’m old and what service time I have left is not going to be deterred by fringe elements who foist themselves upon me with righteous indignation. But I have a duty to speak up when the good people who work for me have to contend with unchecked, unilateral attacks on them and the legacy of the MPD . . .and I failed them by not being able to go to bat for them under the constraints of the hearing protocols last night. In short, your collective silence is DEAFENING and that is why I chose to write to you today. Don’t think that I haven’t noticed or that my employees haven’t noticed—we have!
It goes on from there. Go read it all.

Very nicely stated.
You don't suppose this guy has balls, do you?
Maybe it is time, to take the holsters and pistols off the belts of 95% of the police. Arm them with night sticks and mace/pepper spray. That way policemen will not have to worry about their own pistols being taken away and used on them, and they will not be shooting/killing unarmed citizens. Also, the criminal element will likely give up their own firearms, if they know the police do not carry firearms.
After the investigation look for the city to go up in flames. When that happens, that will be the clue of what is to follow everytime an assailant, who is unarmed, is shot dead when the officer is not arrested, charged, tried and convicted. The cry for "justice" is actually demand for "revenge". The DOJ will be asked to investigate the shooting for possible CR violation and when none is found, the rats will run back into their holes; but the damage will have already been done as witnessed in Ferguson and across the nation.
Gunshot detection microphones that pick up voices used in Brooklyn, Bronx and 90 cities. The Chief wrote a good letter. Everyone matters. Why don't the gangs know that?
Isn't it great! The most liberal. left wing, socialist utopia in the Midwest has problems with minorities being incarcerated. The community organizers are upset about unfairness. Did you ever notice that angry people are never happy? I swear, you could send that woman tens of millions of dollars and she'd still bitch that you owed her more.
These goofs still haven't figured out that if you try to hurt a police officer, you just might get harmed.
At least someplace has a stand up boss. Can we get him here?
Madison was accenting savages from Chicago who took the Greyhound etc. up there "looking for a better life." I read a newspaper article that described Madison Mayor Paul Soglin meeting one bus full of ex-Chicago LINK card carriers to greet them and to give them a package explaining the various free programs available to them courtesy of the working tax payers of Wisconsin.
One thing in life, you bring your problems with you wherever you go. So the same people are in Madison as are in every other black ghetto in the country. And thus they have the same problems thare as anywhere else. They behave the same, or rather, misbehave, and receive the same treatment as a result.
To them it looks and feels like "racist murderers" are against them wherever they go. In reality, decent people and decent cops doing their job just do not respond well to alcohol and drug fueled unemployed shitheads trying to attack and kill police officers. But God forbid don't ever say that!
You can take the boy out of the farm but you can't take the farm out of the boy.
FYI Ann Althouse, the Law Professor and blogger is in Madison. She has a friendly perspective on the fiasco.
The People's Republic of Madison is having race problems? However could that happen? I thought the kind caring socialists had that all under control?
God Bless this boss. A lot of CPD brass can learn a thing or two from him starting with the clown at the top of our own department.
chances are....the mayor or city manager will launch the chief...how dare he express an opinion contrary to the ruling class?
A true LEADER!!
Very sad this boss will be out of a job soon. Nobody wants to hear the truth today.
You'll never hear anything like that from the spineless political hacks that "lead us" present day! Especially if our new Sargeant in any indicator of the leadership that's being fostered these days.
He's gone.
Failure to pander to the racists and warmongers will be the charge.
How DARE he!
"My suggestion is that the rules of order should apply to everyone or those in non-compliance should incur the consequences."
There it is ... Bravo !

Maybe the new ISP Director will back his road troops like this guy?
A write-in for mayor.
Come on now guys and gals, you all know that our Supt. or 1st deputy would go to bat for any one of us in a heartbeat. yeah right, the bosses on this job, with the few exceptions would throw you undet the moving train any given day, why? because they would not want to risk that gold braid pension or nice salary for some worthless police officer under them, be it a Lt. Sgt. Det. or PO. You boys and girls are on your own out there, sure your Sgt. might want to save you, but his bosses would turn on you in a minute, not of the unions back you except when they want you for something, I spent 39 great years on this job, worked for some great bosses, but the times have changed and the wind blows opposite from you, watch your backs and go home safe, that is what is the important thing.

You are a brain dead Limey Friut. That's why when an English soldier was beheaded in the street after being struck by a car driven by a savage radical muslim, it took their police a half hour to get a cop with a gun on scene.
We arm our cops in this country to protect the population against the violence of the criminal savages. Don't question why the police are armed, question why the savages behave criminally. Then address that problem, moron.
From WPT.ORG (Wisconsin Public Television)...
In Madison, harsh demands, harsh realities. A group called the Young, Gifted and Black Coalition wants the Madison police department to have no interaction with black people in the city. The group says it wants to practice self-determination, not policing.
.....if anyone was wondering what it was like to work for a guy that wasn't an egomaniacal, self centered, camera loving douche bag. Here ya go.
i met a Madison PO at the FOP St Pats party last Saturday. He said that the Chief came up through the ranks & is a KMA member w/ enough time & age to retire. The chief is also articulate & can hold his own with the academic types who abound in that town. With a former SDS leader that is now mayor. Between the Milwaukee Co. Sheriff and the MPD Chief - it appears that stand up bosses exist in Wisconsin. Wish we could make the same claim in IL!!
Should have spoke up at the meeting, spineless,..........also now The Charlote VA chief of police threw those other officers under the bus regarding the bleeding honor student, he called it wrong and disturbing without even knowing the facts yet

I hope to god this is sarcasm.
Good job Boss. To bad the CPD does not have a Boss with balls. Oh thats right the merrit hacks are afraid of losing there spot.
First thing after your sure the copper is OK, would be to put the offenders record on display for everyone to see, make a call, form opinions on this also, once a thug always a thug! Who would speak up for a CPD copper if/when something like this happens here? crickets you would hear,as anita and her crew would call the feds in immediately to railroad the hardworking copper to appease the savages, the elected skulls full of mush, and of course the puppet news media!
Pffft!
Who in their right mind would want to be a cop nowadays?
What cop in their right mind would want to be proactive in this "war on the police" climate that is being hotted up by white guilter liberals/progressives/tragedy pimps/excuse makers/catered to constituencies?
Sometimes a man can take only so much abuse before he lashes out.
From one who knows.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
We have a choice. Not giving my vote to un-tested budgeteer, Chuy...controlled by Father Pfleger, Jesse, Clem, Unions and others. Chuy said that once he wins, he'll put a Commission together to study the money problem...Scary. Scary.
One of the most liberal PD's out there...the climate has changed, for now some think you can break laws all you want, and the media is there to "create" the best story possible. Even when faced with the facts, the media has a way of spewing the lies and stir the pot, then sit back and enjoy the results of the bullshit.
Some piece of shit wants to fight the police to avoid a lengthy prison sentence for violating his probation... what do you think is going to happen... the day we turn and walk away from that is the day that the average people are going to hide in fear...

If the public ever takes our (police) guns away I guarantee there will be no police in this country because they would all resign. Would you take weapons away from our soldiers? Do you really think these 'unarmed' saints will behave better knowing we don't have guns? As a child did you behave better knowing that your father at any second could whip out the belt and crack you a good one? Isn't that the same concept? Or did mommy and daddy give you time out? What would we do if we encounter one of these machete wielding wackos? Mace him to death? Wow...I really hope you're not serious in your post. Time to go...I gotta go to the restroom and take a big fat Michael and then whipe my Moore.

UMMMMMMMMMM, I will go out on a limb here and say this guy was using sarcasm.

So instead you're giving your vote to the "tested" guy who is bankrupting the city and allowing our rating to fall to nearly junk status? Brilliant. Just brilliant. And they say that the American voter is stupid.

Since you have reading comprehension issues, we can spell it out for you. He was following the rules of order in place as he watched others violate them. He is a stand up person who would not break the rules, but instead followed them even though it was difficult to do so and then spoke his peace when he was able to.
Mike koval was in charge of testing for Madison when I tried it up there before CPD. I got cut as it was my first time going through a process. I sent him an email to see where I could've improved and he sent me a handwritten letter that helped me tremendously. Overall he's a standup guy and I'm glad that he has the courage to say something like this.
I also know Mike Koval. He was promoted from Sergeant to Chief which is highly unusual except that Mike turned down promotions in the past because it would take him away from working with the troops.
Mad City isn't quite the ultra-liberal town it once was (the 60's hippies grew up and had kids) or as safe, either.
We can take jabs at Madison -- an isthmus surrounded by reality -- but so far MAPD has kept the lid on things and even the young man's family have said in the worst case scenario it was an individual act and THEY support MAPD. Oh, and Jesse (remember him?) called the family. You'll notice he's conspicuous by his absence.
I'm watching this one because if they can keep things in control this may set an example for how other cities can manage this crap. Madison wasn't the first and won't be the last.
POLICE LIVES MATTER
RIP Wisconsin State Trooper shot and killed while assisting in the search for an armed bank robber in Fond du Lac. Unofficial word is that the suspect was killed, too.
