No $3 Million for Chiraq?
- A South Side alderman is trying to scuttle Spike Lee’s plans to use the title “Chiraq” for the filmmaker’s movie about violence on the streets of Chicago.
Ald. Will Burns, 4th, is asking for a City Council vote on a symbolic measure that would urge the state not to give Lee and his company, Forty Acres and A Mule Filmworks, a $3 million tax break for filming in Illinois.
“If he wants to name the movie 'Chiraq' and film it in the city of Chicago, he should be able to get the permits for that and he should be able to do it, but we shouldn’t give him money as taxpayers to brand a part of the city as Iraq,” Burns said after Wednesday’s council meeting, at which he introduced his nonbinding resolution.
Oh wait...."nonbinding." That means it's pretty much bullshit and they won't stand in the way of Spike's "art" while making sure the permits are paid up and the rental companies are all connected.

Here's a suggestion, instead of a $3 million tax break, charge spike lee $30 million and use the money to fund police pensions.
I'm not a big fan of Spike so to defend him is odd for me. Shouldn't he be able to name his project whatever he wants? I know their hitting him w/no break tax wise if they don't get a new film or "Joint" title, but something restrictive to his title via tax break seems like a means of control of Spike's free speech.
Again, I'm not a fan, but I am a fan of free speech in it's totality.
Interesting that the creatures and Mayor presumably believe in Our Constitution's right to free speech seem to be charging a director for his right to name his project whatever the director wants to.

You have to admit that the taxpayers have a lot of money, and 3 million is really chickenfeed. It will bring attention to the state and Chicago.

If you don't want the city reffered to as chiraq, everyone needs to fucking get up and help stop the reason it is called that. People are more concerned with silencing the nickname than helping stop the shootings(well helping put shooters in jail. It's Probably impossible to stop a shooting)

So it's a "sprinkle some tax money my way event" meaning come on spike put money in the plain Manila envelopes for the Chicago friends and family aldermanic program! This film trash is a done deal let's hope it shows the true thug crime. Let's hope it shows how much support the police have (spike lee likes the police lol). Bet the mayor and city council will demand that Chicago heroes Cpd are featured prominently doing the job they do everyday to protect the people that don't want to be policed! Bet also spike makes donation to police memorial foundation and the pension funds. Fantasy yep reality nope!

Wasn't Mayor Daley the first one to use that term?? I specifically remember a press conference after a really bad weekend of shootings where he said this is Chicago not Chi raq.
AS far as making him change the movies name, give me a break. They don't realize how ridiculous that sounds.
Also, if they want to continue to have companies film their shows/movies in Chicago, they should tread lightly.
If we get a reputation for only supporting films we 'agree with' , that could steer business to other cities.

I don't understand why the aldercreatures are so worked up over the name Chiraq. They have all worked very hard for many years to help Chicago earn the reputation that it has.
Three, four, five hundred homicides a year with three times that number of shootings where the victim survives. Cook County has also been very helpful in keeping violent offenders out of jail and on the street. Why aren't the alderman aren't offended by those facts?
