CALEA is nothing but a scam. It was designed for small suburban /po dunk agencies to get a sticker to put in their car and give them legitimacy. It was a way for these small departments to show they were a legit and capable police department. There are so many hoops and regulations to jump through, along with fees to get their sticker it's a joke. They are the reason for the new uniform standards. Every CALEA department has the tattoo rules.

There is no reason for the CPD to be joining this nonsense. This is purely a political move for Mcmustache to flaunt in front of the NYPD and say ha see we are accredited. Yet another pay to play certification that giver you nothing in return. In 2 yrs we will no longer pay the bills or meet their requirements. Watch for reporting standards to change as well. It's coming down the pipe for sure. CALEA gives you nothing in return for you paying them a ridiculous fee. It's just lining their pockets.

I think Palos Heights came up with this bullshit along with several other suburban chiefs. It doesn't teach you how to protect your citizens. It doesn't teach you how to catch bad guys. It's retired chiefs coming up with bullshit program to sell to a city AND LINE THEIR POCKETS ON THE TAXPAYER DIME. PURE SCAM!

Another scam is the company formed for towns searching for police chiefs. Years ago, one of these numbskulls named Dan something or other was working for the company when La Grange Park came looking for a chief. Low and behold, Dan says he's the best candidate becomes the chief! Dan ruined a pretty cool police department. Dan's prior background was assistant chief up in Elgin, but they tossed his ass out on the street. I think Dan was also a NEMERT instructor, too. More scam for the skim! FOR ALL YOU ASPIRING INVESTIGATIVE REPORTERS, CHECK THIS STUFF OUT! THE INFO IS 0UT THERE!

SCC,yes it is a money making scam. CALEA is made up of retired golden boys looking to bilk tax payers out of millions. It offers absolutely NOTHING. Even Schaumburg PD,the first in Illinois to be "accredited" thru CALEA,dropped them because it offers nothing to the public or the dept.

Outside testing for promotions??? My ass,the golden boys just once again conspire to pick the new up and comers, while the soft as pusppyshit officers believe this nonsense that its fair and impartial.

CALEA=SCAM

I did it for a suburban department. Lots of work. Some of its requirements seem a Little crazy. There are over 485 standards a department must comply with. Some optional standards can be opted out of if you do not comply. You must have written policies or directives for each standard. Each standard requires written proofs to show how the department meets the standard.
I can say it's worthwhile but yet it needs some modifications.
The assessment portion is crazy.
Assessors (usually retired Chiefs /commanders) from similar size departments as yours come for a visit to review your practices.they review some of the standards off site ahead of time but you must answer questions and show compliance on site. Plus hold a open to the public meeting and call in session while they are present.

This is a huge scam. It is not about the department getting better. It is about McCarthy making a name for himself. Many agencies are getting out after going through all the B.S. to get their accreditation because it is just a ridiculous amount of money both in terms of fees and manpower, and it does not stop lawsuits. Here's an article to check out.

CALEA is a scam, just like the IHSA. The IHSA thinks that high schools can't organize a sports program without them, so you pay to be a member (actually client would be a better word). Same with CALEA. You pay to be a member. Then you get a certificate, suitable for framing for your lobby, and stickers for all your special cars. Not unlike an associate FOP member.

CALEA is a crutch. For agencies that don't have the time or intelligence to develop their own operating procedures, the can adopt the CALEA policy book. I can't imagine why any leader would turn over the inner workings of an agency to a group that has compiled a book of generic guidelines. It's like admitting that you don't know, or don't want to know how your department operates. I always thought the best ways to run an efficient department come from communications within that department. This just widens the gap between street cops and command. Why do you think only 10% of US police agencies belong?

Ask an ISP road troop with 10-15 years on how well CALEA has helped him out

SCC: i've posted before on this subject and thank you for pursuing this boondoggle. i talked to a Skokie PO and he informed me that the IL Assn of Chiefs formed their own accreditation group which streamlined the paperwork heavy process & reduce costs. It was mainly created to get out of CALEA but to also appease their village/city councils who saw "value" in accreditation. They even designed their own sticker to keep up appearances on their squad cars.
So if there's a cheaper, streamlined process, why would McStreetlight join a more costly, cumbersome process just to get another certificate to hang on the wall?? And with all the decals on the CPD squads, where do they affix the coveted CALEA seal of approval?

Bottom line = the money & manpower could be better spent on an understaffed PD, or at least maintain the squad cars instead of adding another decal.

Could there be a parallel with the CPS no bid contract for the firm which would train Principals?? Who in City Hall authorized CPD to waste staff & funds?? Was FOP advised that the assessment includes interviewing the rank & file and would the PO's be assured anonymity if they participated? Could a PO refuse to be interviewed? Looks like FOP is again sleeping on duty while Mc Dufus is on a roll.

"Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom." Or in our case survival as we rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic!

Here is the craziest thing. The person in charge of the the CALEA certification is the connected Administrative Manager who didn't lose her job when all the district administrative managers lost theirs. She probably should have been fired twice and was saved, till this day no one knows why or who. She handled the budget, and low and behold, since she left the academy, they are finding all kinds of problems with her work and, low and behold, missing documents that of course she left behind and says they should be there. And, while everyone else begs for manpower, they have 20 people working on this nonsense. With her running this, it will never happen and end up costing taxpayers and coppers.

This scam is being worked in the medical field as well. Pay up, get a cheap plastic plaque for the lobby about how this is a "Certified Patient Centered Medical Home." Keep paying, get a little star with "2015" to stick on the plaque. Keep going to self-congratulatory luncheons where they exhibit their dentition to the cameras while handing each other "awards."

In the meantime, they f__k the place up so bad with new "procedures" and "protocols" that patients simply leave. Suddenly, "teams" of 10-12 people who actually do harm, in place of one doctor and a nurse who did a great deal of good. All high-sounding "administrative" talk and rules and regulations and no more simple medicine being practiced.

6/10/2015 08:21:00 PM

Actually, CALEA doesn't teach ANYTHING.
It offers suggestions for how a dept should be run.
These suggestions are gathered from dept heads of the depts. that are part of CALEA
Problem here is that we are a big city dept. CALEA is for that small dept and I mean small. Less than 20 employees would do well with this program.
CALEA standards won't work here. We have dilapidated buildings, vehicles and equipment.
CALEA is just a money grab.
This is just another scam to take taxpayers dollars and for some bosses to add to their resumes.

I wonder if CALEA complies with the Illinois Training and Standards Board and Illinois State Laws.
I mean CALEA has its own use of force model. Will that conflict with our established and department trained use of force model? I doubt it.
Our equipment and facilities won't pass Calea standards. What then?

And, that person "running" this at R&D?
It is true that there are many financial issues at the Academy since the person left.
5 yrs of financial paperwork unaccounted for.

All I can say is watch out!

What a joke! So this man who works for them is threatening me & my child & illegally accessed our information which I have documented proof of and no department can help, not even the agency who handles corruption in the department because of accreditation conflicts of interest. So basically they have come into our state and are using their "Accreditation" to mafia style harass LE family and no one can touch them. It is by far the most disturbing & corrupt thing I have ever gone through. Please god if your department is considering CALEA please show your department my post and remember our family. If you look in their by laws there is some minor consequences for the bottom of the barrel rankings that they can choose to remove them but the "Elite" do not have any consequences, ZERO and can do whatever they want to you and your family. It is all on their website. Please help me spread the truth about CALEA & do everything you can to protect your family & citizens, DO NOT give CALEA any more power to abuse. Tell CALEA that they can not set the bar for your department on anti-corrupt/legitimacy until they fix their own!
