So....Money Problems are Solved?

  • Those annoyingly long security lines at Midway International Airport could be shortened by a major $248 million remodeling of the airport over the next several years, also slated to include more parking, restaurants and shops, according to a proposal announced by city officials Thursday.

Under the plan, to be paid for by airport operations and the federal government, the pedestrian bridge over Cicero Avenue would expand from 60 to 300 feet wide, adding 80,000 square feet to the security waiting area. The number of lanes would increase from 17 to 27, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.

"Midway is more than an airport. It is an important economic engine for the city of Chicago," Emanuel said. "Midway's modernization is on track and will be completed."
So that's like what? Half of the $550 million balloon payment due at the end of the year? Rahm must be rolling in the dough.

FOP? PBPA? You guys keeping a running tote-board of all the money this sawed-off 9-digit-midget is spending on everything EXCEPT what he is required to by law? DePaul stadium, Malcolm Ten, parks, 6-figure-jobs for ex-aldercreatures, etc.

SCC, you took the words right out of my mouth. $248mil, almost half the pension payment, and nary a word from our leaders at FOP. I thought we were broke, rahmy. Does anyone in the media question anything this guy does, besides Joravsky and Prieb? Hey Chuckie, where's you I-team? Suppelsa, too busy investigating the mean lady at the beauty pageant? Franny and Frank, does your back hurt from carrying the water for rahm? I don't read the Trib, but where's Kass? We know Steinberg is tuning up the old lady, so he won't report it. Andy shaw is too busy creating non-stories for him to be bothered. There's a lot of questions that aren't getting asked, MSM, BGA.

Let's not forget the huge, new HALLOWEEN parade and festival the City is producing this year.

Or that huge new Hawks-practice ICE RINK that will replace the old Malcom X college (because we so desperately needed a NEW Malcolm X College).

Someone's got to be working overtime, fertilizing that money tree in the basement of City Hall.

How to get around the pension shortfall, tax it!

,clip>
Natalie Davila, former research director for the Illinois Revenue Department, explains in an article in Tax Facts, a publication of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois: In 2012, 1 in 4 Illinois tax returns claimed a retirement income exemption to avoid paying taxes. Altogether, those exemptions cost the state $2.3 billion — money that could pay down Illinois’ pension debt, or help it catch up on the billions in unpaid bills, or fund those human and other services that are getting squeezed out of the budget by the cost of paying interest and principal on the state’s crushing indebtedness.

While the number of residents filing returns overall has actually declined slightly from 2007 to 2012, the number of people claiming a retirement income exemption has increased by 9 percent. While declared income of all residents grew during that time in the single digits, the value of retirement exemptions grew by 36 percent. In other words, the retirement exemption is eating an ever-increasing chunk of the state budget.

Meanwhile the learned helplessness continues, Everyone waiting for someone else to do something, the FOp,BPBA whatever.

Hey,go cower in the corner and wait for 'the good guys' to show up to save the pensions.

+++++++This Midway Airport expansion is bullshit. I fly in and out of there all the time. Yes, sometimes the lines are long, but get to the airport on time like you're supposed to, and NO PROBLEM.

More waste! Come on Andy from BGA, get to it!

All that money is in a different account. We cannot use it for pensions.
If we wanted to fund your pensions, we would put the money in the fund the pensions account.

We do not want to fund the pensions, so we wiil not put the money in the fund the pensions account.

Look at the bright side, if they upgrade Midway Airport, it will be worth more in the bankruptcy. And the CPD Pension Fund might just own it.

The airport remodeling is a must do economic project that can't wait. Chicago's status as a top tier city demands it. It cannot be shoved to the back burner for less necessary expenses.

Maybe it's time to force Rahm to open the books and let everyone have a look see at his TIF Funds maybe we could figure out where exactly the money comes from and who gets it. Everyone can then see for themselves that Rahm uses the money very politically to his own advantage.

If you watched Chicago Tonight on Wednesday, you might have seen the mayor in an interview. He flat out came out and said that the city, by state law, is not required to fund the pensions any more then they are and if that is not enough, then the pensions go insolvent and that the retirees will not get a check. And, that is just too bad. He said he is trying to help the employees and do us a favor by getting us to give up some of our benefits to save the pensions. You can see where this is going, can't you?

How much money did the city waste on part 1 of the Lt. test to get rid of 2 sgt's that didn't qualify for part 2? That's right, a total of 2 that failed the test out of 600 or so that sat for the test. Plus 3 escorted out for cheating. Paying a vendor to research and write a test. Paying McCormick place to hold it there. Having to pay the vendor in order to hire dozens of employees for the day. Paying to get the 130 question scan-tron test graded and an e mail sent to the applicants 61 days after part 1. What a waste of cash. I guess if you test every 10 years you don't mind going top shelf.

Like it or not Chicago is a top tourist destination. Not just for this country but throughout he world. These type of improvements keep people coming to Chicago to spend money. That keeps he city from going bankrupt which keeps he city able to one day fund the pension funds.

Yea, it's Federal money. But if Rahmulus can seek the funds for the Project and then take credit - Why can't he do the same for the pension payment? Perhaps he wants to see the funds remain insolvent due to the anti pension sentiments that the general public has now embraced.

"To be paid for out of airport operations and the federal government"

Seems like there isn't a problem here? I get it that SCC has a distaste for most government spending but you do need to continue investments in the city regardless of other fiscal distress. And in this case the money doesn't sound like it's actually coming from the city.

I mean, if you think the fiscal situation with Chicago's pension obligations is bad now, stop investing in your city infrastructure and future growth and see what happens. I'm pretty sure we've tried this previously and wound up with Detroit.

How to get around the pension shortfall, tax it!

I honestly would not have a problem with that except for the fact that those tax monies would not go to pay down the pension shortfall. How do I know this? Easy. I believe in the old saying " How do you know a politician is lying? His lips are moving."

Rahm wants to address the pension issue? Cut the number of aldermen from 50 to 25 and I and probably a lot more people will start to take him seriously.

When was the last time that anyone actually heard that our Mayor and Aldermen were "sharing the pain?"

Rahm is going to rebuild or remodel the same airport that Daley rebuilt and remodeled? This is all part of a scam to put more money in the pockets of the anointed friends of the Machine.

State law sets a payment level for our pension. Then, logically speaking, if the city does not contribute that amount because of "pension holiday" then the mayor and aldermen would be breaking that law.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I do not remember seeing anything in the law that allows a municipality to not contribute their mandated share because THEY say they cannot afford it.
