Think about this. List is about 11 years old. You needed at least 1 year off probation, see E05-07 issued 15Oct2004. If they do start another test it wouldn't be authorized/issued, sign up dates, part 1 and 2 taken and scored, etc. for at least a year. Even if you scored high enough to be in the first class you would be looking at almost 15 years between tests. That is the definition of insanity.

Which also means every "new" detective will have at least 15-16 years, many will have more. Which leads to those new detectives retiring within a few years because Garry hates detectives and makes the job miserable. Of course he doesn't discriminate and does that for the entire department.

Not nearly a decade. It is over a decade. That test was given in December 2004. The results were out by March 2005. First class off that list I believe was May 2005. The lowest possible seniority for any detective today is 13 years.

Can someone tell the 003rd District Commander to go back to Management School and learn to address his people.
Apparently they had a shooting yesterday and he berated a decent Lt. And several Sgt.'s after going into a tizzy about another shit head getting shot on 66/Cottage. Guess what bossman, your in the 003rd District and gang members are going to get shot. That is not a reason to scream, spit and foam at the mouth and further demoralize ALL of your supervisory staff in front of a bunch of PO's. One of the female Sgt.'s was so upset that she began to cry and hyperventilate and was almost rushed to the Hospital. Do you actually think that is going to make them work harder? LMAO! Activity is way down and crime is out of control and at an all time high in 003 since they moved GE. If I was GMAC I would look to replace him as well as the little two face XO. This Commander has a mutiny on his hands and ALL watches have shut down. You go get your own fucking contact cards... We are done! Good luck at CompStat brotha!

Off topic:

It's official:

Little Tommy Bryne has officially retired from the Chicago Park District as their Security Director.

He just reached his 10 years of scamming a 2nd pension (Streets and Sans boss and Park District from 2005 to 2015) to go with his Deputy Chief's pension of $131,000 a year.

( RE: www.bettergov.org/pension/?PensionCode=201&F_PensionName='Chicago%20Police'&F_Year='2015' )

This Daley political hack will NOW get pensions close to $300,000 a year.

It turns out he is leaving now while a large number of grievances filed again his dimwit moves will be settled very soon and cost the taxpayers an additional hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Names that are being kicked around to take his place are Mark Donahue (Former FOP boss). Mike Shields who is Michelle Obama's cousin. A former CPD lieutenant named McCarthy as well as Bo Ramos who is a park security manager (former CPD P.O.).

I swear to God, I've never understood why adults allow themselves to be talked to as though they were someone's child.
I honestly don't give a fuck what your rank is: You will not talk to me in a disrespectful manner, and not have it addressed or returned in kind.
My 2nd year on the job, we were sitting around joking during an arrest. Tac Sgt decides to talk shit to short timer. (Me) He hit me with a couple zingers. I took it in stride. All the guys laughed...so did I.
Then, I returned fire. Got him good a time or two. Now, the older guys are giving Sarge shit about the youngster getting the best of him.
Suddenly, Sarge wants become all serious and shit.
Says to me "Watch your mouth officer". Which only made the vets laugh more. I just kept my down and typed, with a grin on my face.
Out of nowhere, Sarge says "Say one more thing!"
This pissed me off. Before I knew it, I said "Sarge, don't say shit to me, that you don't want said back to you!"
"Because when you wanna talk shit, it's no longer about Sgt to PO...It's man to man". "And man to man, you aint gonna do shit to me!"
He just repeated "Watch your mouth officer". I replied "Or what?"
A coworker took me out of the office.
Sarge and I were never quite as cool after that. And miraculously, I got shipped to another team a couple periods later.
Many years later in my career, another Sgt thought she could talk shit to me and have it go unchecked. She was wrong.
I think if more PO's stopped quivering in pants, like little 5 year olds, when white shirts talk to them like their are fuckin children, more white shirts would get the message.
It's not about being a bad-ass, it's simply demanding to be treated like a fuckin adult.

its still the best job in the department. Don't let detectives scare you away with paper work and typing and mandatory overtime. Its all about time management and the ability to work independently without a supervisor always breathing down your neck to make sure your doing your job. If you want a crap lot of overtime(average 80-100hrs a period) and be married to the job work HGS. If you want some overtime that's manageable (average 20-30hrs or more if you want it a period) work RBT. If you want almost no overtime and minimal court work SVU. Going from patrol to the detective division is like night and day, for once in your career you are treated like an adult. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, some supervisors are born douche bags and can't help themselves, but most bosses in the detective division are great bosses. That's right I called it detective division, not bureau-"F" you Garry- this is not New York, and its still area 1,2 and 3 to me...... We have our own Chicago traditions

If you break down into tears and hyperventilate because you got bitched out, then you don't need to be a leader of men, especially not in a district that demands the level of courage to work it that it does.

Wait a minute! A police sergeant started to cry and hyperventilate and was almost rushed to the hospital? Really? I had a commander start yelling at me and trying to humiliate me and I just told him that my father never talked to me like that I and I would not allow him to do so and I walked away. I suggest that people start doing this and then try to obtain a complaint on the commander/supervisor who acts like this. Unless you are in a specialized unit and are worried about being dumped, what are they going to do to you? You did not disrespect them just refused to take their disrespect.

REALLY? A female sergeant started to cry and hyper-ventilate? Because she got yelled at by her boss? Did the sergeant do her job correctly? Would she be capable of working for.... Steve Jobs? Warren Buffet? Hillary wants to know! Because if she couldn't do her her job correctly due to her gender, then it's time for the Democratic Party to lower the standards for women once again. OK, so now these future Sleuths are officially investigators. Then we should be expecting a drop in Murders and more Murders solved along with a good drop in other crimes, within a reasonable amount of time. If no crime stats drop, then what is the sense of even having more of them? . Who monitors and is responsible for their success-failure rate and their staying on as detectives? ? Answer: Nobody really. CPD is just a Political Circus, run by a short fingered political Clown at City Hall and his trained Chimp, with no real clue about how to institute real crime-fighting sucess, and dedicated to protecting the citizens far better than currently with the combat zone environment here currently.

Love these comments.......the sergeants Union is waiting on an arbitrator to rule on getting the 55 yr old free health care benefit. Once they receive that I, along with about 10 current sgts, are leaving in a hurry. once the Lt. Test is scored and people score higher than 150 then they'll realize they have no shot of making lt. Off the test. They will pull the plug also unless they have a nice, easy gig. The test will stay up for awhile. And besides, you think they give 2 shits about getting "flack" about a long kept list. This dicks list is up longer than the previous sgts list.

In the Old Days, like in episodes of CRIME STORY with Dennis Farina (RIP), pre-computer, pre-cameras everywhere, pre Miranda and a whole lot of other things, there were many good Meritorious Detectives who used shoe leather and blackjacks. First and foremost they had to be good street cops and have some special skills like languages or know an area really well because they grew up and worked there.

Today, what do we have .... anyone like that would be screened out.

Remember, if involved in a shooting incident you say nothing until your lawyer is there with you. Your are feeling like you have to go to the hospital until then.

One more thing, when you take these tests, don't be the dumb fuck who will treat it like real life. You always play it by the book, if that means getting a number, you get it.

Don't hold your breath if you're high on the list. They are only 70 sgts short. This is the youngest group of sgts ever. I forsee either this list being up for a very long time, or I see it bein taken down quick after about 250 and a new test... I really don't see the list being up as long as the last one, especially with all the flack they caught by keeping the lists up so long

9/16/2015 02:47:00 PM

You posted this before the last round of Sgt promotions too, they were about 60 short then. Your logic is completely flawed. Even if this the "youngest group of sgts ever," which I doubt, they are still short sergeants. If you're within 50, save up to buy some new uniforms. You probably need about $500 to spend on shirts, hats, and other bullshit. You probably won't see that pay raise for a month or two after you get out of school. Don't let the haters get to you, you're going to make it and soon.

It's OK. It's only the Chicago Police Department. Sgt. needs time to grow into these things.

Stop crying about newly promoted detectives retiring in a few years. That just means they will have to replaced with new detectives. There's nothing wrong with promoting someone to detective with 15 plus years on the job--better than promoting someone with 2.5 years on the job to a spot that inevitably will be investigating a police shooting.

Yes, the dept sucks for not giving a test for detective sooner, but don't begrudge those who got promoted from an older list. Your time will come. In the meantime, start studying those orders now, and forget bernstein. Study the orders. They are on the computer. You can print them. It will help you with your job now. And when it comes to test time, you will know the orders because you experienced them in action, not because you crammed and memorized for a few months before the test was given.

Park District said...

9/16/2015 10:41:00 AM

Jealous, aren't you? You're the reason we can't take our families into the parks, not little Tommy Byrne. His "dimwit" moves included telling park security personnel (off-duty and retired coppers) to actually do some work. Go back to your momma's basement, asswipe.

"Investigators", as you call them, are responsible for investigating crime. They are not responsible for a "drop" in murders. If you believe that police officers prevent people from killing one another then it would be you, the P.O. out there on the street who is responsible for the 50 murder increase this year. It is you who has failed to accomplish real crime-fighting sucess and protect the citizens. Who monitors you and is responsible for your failure? It may be time to let you go from your political hack job.

Sounds like Sgt jankowski in 017, a fat degenerate who talks to po's like they're his kids. Some of you tools get that white shirt and forget that your a man like everyone else, some of us don't care. No sounds more like a civilian that has no clue how things work. More detectives doesn't mean that crime drops. It could mean that more cases on backlog get closed but the number of new detectives is like a drop in the bucket. It won't even come close to the attrition of retiring detectives. Also, cases closed doesn't necessarily mean cases solved. Without help from the public, witnesses, victims or pure luck many cases won't be solved. Even Perry Mason needed a little bit of luck.

You're right. Too many P/Os let this type of treatment go. Same goes for lieutenants, captains, XOs, etc. Also some lockup keepers have hostile and standoffish attitudes towards P/Os too when they're bringing in prisoners. P/Os can get CR numbers on them too. If that's what it takes to get these people to act like adults then it must be done. I suggest P/Os write everything down when treated in an abusive way. Record the date and times, the people involved and what happened. Speak to an attorney about your hostile work environment, or else you can take this shit home with you and ruminate about it and just be pissed off about it. Just because you're a P/O doesn't mean you have to take unnecessary BS from other city employees.

Commander in 003 was a dick as a captain in 005 but from my experiences with him as a commander he has been cool. Seems like he really gets on people he thinks are doing the bare minimum to get by. But either way he should have done this privately and not in front of other people.

Does it really matter what your rank is on the list when the list is 10 years old? It's pathetic that they still promote off a list that old. The test was given on either 2003 or 2004. It's been so long I can't remember.

9/18/2015 01:52:00 AM

All these guys should have been made over 5 years ago. with the detectives division being gutted and compressed into three areas. the department tried to do more with less. at one point they didn't make a detectives class for years? these guys had this owed to them. congratulations and best of luck.

Dont jump the gun bigboy. Not sure that is going to happen. Get all the facts. Are you aware that McCarthy has previously stated that Servin should never have been charged? Below is the link

http://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/7/71/536195/sneed-supt-mccarthy-says-dante-servin-shouldnt-charged

9/17/2015 03:26:00 PM

IF McCarthy said he never should have been charged, why did the case go to the police board??? McCarthy could have squashed it before it got to the police board. if this is true, that just reaffirms that McCarthy says one thing to the media, and does the opposite with CPD.

Don't let the facts or the process get in the way of your thinking and your dislike of McCarthy. If you bothered to read the articles you would not come off sounding like you don't know what you are talking about.
First, the case never went to the police board. At this point OPRA is recommending his firing and McCarthy has like 60 days to agree with OPRA recommendation or stop it. McCarthy has to ok the recommendation in order for the case to proceed to the police board. During this time he can stop it.
All your comment reaffirms is that you have no idea what you are talking about

We will have one less, the Police Board voted to fire an excellent Detective yesterday. I'm sure McNumbnuts will not hesitate to fire Dante S. for an off duty shooting incident where his life was threatened near his home.

Remember, if involved in a shooting incident you say nothing until your lawyer is there with you. Your are feeling like you have to go to the hospital until then.

Good Luck D.S.

Pay attention!! The Police Board did not vote to fire DS, IPRA has only reccomended his firing to the Supt. That post is a perfect example of cops not paying attention to what goes on around them and not understanding how thIs department functions.

Couldn't agree more. McCarthy can stop it right now it before it goes to the police board. The poster is sure McCarthy WILL NOT HESITATE to fire him. Then why would he have said Servin should not have been charged.

Yes it's a joke, even the last 2 times they promoted off the list it was the bottom dumbest lowest scoring officers. This Department is a joke.

9/17/2015 12:02:00 PM

So when it's lower on the list it's nothing but dumb officers, and high on the list is everyone that had the answers, the rest is filled with merit hacks. Complaining is the only thing that will make some of you happy. Congrats detectives

One of the above comments said something about waiting for the arbitrator to decide on Sgt retiring at 55 yrs of age with free health insurance. I don't know what you are talking about, Sgt already have that agreement with the last contract. Good thru 2017.

I think if more PO's stopped quivering in pants, like little 5 year olds, when white shirts talk to them like their are fuckin children, more white shirts would get the message.
It's not about being a bad-ass, it's simply demanding to be treated like a fuckin adult.

Really???? You are everything that is wrong with the department. Hostile work environment....please. How about this.......do your job and stop acting like a spoiled child and the "white shirts" won't have to talk to you like one. This dept has become a bunch of puss' and cowards.

Not true.....sgts. who retire BEFORE contribute 2 percent annually to health care. As of now they do not receive the free health care at 55 that FOP members receive. Sgts. Union filed a grievance and it should change since everyone else has this benefit for now. So the original poster was correct. When the sgts. Receive this benefit I'm guessing alot more people on the bubble may quickly pull the plug.

Wrong. A spoiled child is a child who bitches every time they don't get what they want. Sounds like you more than me. You want cops to shut up and take bullshit and you don't like it when challenged by a PO. I suspect you're a supervisor yourself and of course you will side with the supervisor in any case. There are a few sgts and lts in my district who take out their anger, frustration, incompetence, unresolved issues, character defects and mental illnesses on P/Os while P/Os take this shit just because they don't wanna rock the boat. The only pussies and cowards out here are the asshole supervisors who get pissed off at the P.O because of their own inefficiency and lack of knowledge about their job and they think being a white shirt gives them the authority to be a prick. You people get pissed off because you're unsure of yourselves and you don't know what to do. Is it that hard to treat a PO with decency and politeness? I'm not talking about all supervisors, just some.

Actually, it was a proper use of force. Anita couldn't charge higher or she would have. She said so in an interview in the trib. To charge him AT ALL was a political decision that completely backfired. You must teach CAPS or verbal judo.

The only accuracy in any of your comments is that yes I am a supervisor and yes not all supervisors but some. I think that there are some people on the dept, POs and supervisors alike, that don't know how to talk to people. There is a black cloud looming over this department. Due to the struggles in the dept (manpower, budget cuts...etc) and general climate of this country in regards to law enforcement, a cancer has formed in this dept. We have becomeconstant complainers and the weak among us has latched on to it and it is spreading throughout the dept, especially among our young officers. Comments such as yours fuels the lazy and incompetent to push the inadequacies off on a supervisor. "It's not my fault the boss yelled at me" My guess is that your belief in your superior knowledge and inability to err kept you from accepting the help of a more knowledgeable person.....your disregard of what this supervisor said probably ended in him having to explain his expectations to you carefully so you might comprehend his instructions. We have officers with 2 minutes on the job trying to tell bosses what and when they will do. Why? Because people with time bitch and moan and teach these kids to do the same. This is a paramilitary organizations, grow a pair. Hostile work environment for getting yelled at? You wouldn't last a day in the military. Yes coward and puss. Go teach more recruits to be lazy and useless so this dept becomes the group of assholes the media and public would love to paint us as.....how about using your head, doing your job responsibly and taking pride in the fact that we are the Chicago Police Department and we won't run with our tails between our legs. Comments such as yours scare me, I see too much of such self pitying laziness and it is an embarrassment.

First of all I've spent all of my 16 years on the street working. Coward and a puss is what you see when you look in the mirror but its not me. And btw I don't work in a training district and barely ever come in contact with a recruit. The media are gonna paint us as assholes no matter what we do. That's their agenda. Its propaganda. You didn't know that yet? And the military has nothing to do with this and don't think your shit doesn't stink because you served in the military. It doesn't make you above anybody on this job who didn't join the military. Don't mistake self pity and laziness for standing up for myself and from doing what I need to do to protect myself. Negative on all your comments.....working you say? I think not. I know your kind and see it ever day. You are the guy that no one wants to work with because you do nothing but bitch all day and you think you know it all. Thank God you are in a slow district so you have extra time to think about stupid shit like filing your next grievance or hostile work environment beef. Glad no recruits are subjected to your bile. And from your comments about my military service I can see you either couldnt swing boot camp, being crybaby and all, or they wouldn't take you because of your mental defects or your fragile physical state. Thank Good CPD has lower standards so you can carry a gun and act like a badass when you are really nothing more than a spoiled scared child. Hopefully you are out in 20. The department doesn't need your kind on this job. And to the other post....I never said that my rank makes me more knowledgeable......my point lies in the fact that based on his comments it is likelier than not that someone is more knowledgeable. Glad he found another crybaby to defend him though.....you guys (I use that term loosely) should stick together....

First of all, there are no slow districts genius. There are thousands less officers on the street than there was 10 years ago and there are more 911 calls for police service now than there was 10 years ago. I can't go to the hole and hide out. I'm out there working, not as much as I used to though. I've made 2,000 arrests and that's not paper jumping. That's either box 1 or box 2 and more felonies than misdemeanors. You're saying I act like a bad ass. Wrong again. I act the same way I did before I entered the police academy. I'm the fuckin guy who gets to the scene first. Get it? No laziness here. And I don't give 2 shits if nobody wants to work with me nor do I think I know everything. As a matter of fact I don't want to work with idiots who bitch all day, think they know everything, have delusions of grandeur, and are incompetent fools. The best partner I ever had is me, myself and I. Too bad people like you mislead and put BS into recruits minds and if you took my comments hard about P/Os fighting back when they are wronged then you're obviously one of the problem sgts. And boot camp? You think you're a bad ass because you got through boot camp? I never tried boot camp. Like I said before I was never in the military and never attempted to be. People like you are the problem with this department. I brought up a valid and important issue regarding P/Os and you went off like a king berating a peasant. That type of culture in this dept. needs to change.
