Another Delayed

Word is the 014 District is going to take a beating at CompStat over this one:
  • A man died Thursday night, nearly six years after he was shot in the head while walking with his mother in the Northwest Side Logan Square neighborhood.

An autopsy Friday determined Jeremy Gonzalez died from complications of a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Gonzalez was 14 when he and his mother were walking in the 3400 block of West Armitage shortly after 9 a.m. on Dec. 8, 2009, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Garry will claim that CompStat could have prevented this if only he had been here a few years earlier.

Where was the safe passage coverage?

Wouldn't it be hilarious if McYellsALot called in the old Lt.'s, Capt's, and D/C and grilled them about it? Get that retired guy up from Florida and put him in the hot seat.

Mc-Out-Of-Ideas and Tracy are going to
run the unit and event summary for this
job to identify all the officers involved...

Then they're going to have them written up
and taking suspension time for failing
to prevent this shooting/now homicide.

It's the New Yuck/Compstat way.
Right?

Don't worry, 014 likes to dump its crime on the neighboring districts. Guy was beaten and robbed on Drake in 014 but called 911 from across the border in 025, Commander Buzlic came over the radio and said "the job is 025's". Why 014 wouldn't even check for a crime scene.

HAHAHA! Good one. But with ego, i expect he probably would say that. Rumor has it he would also have extinguished the Chicago Fire and prevented the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

(OT) Finally some good news! If your a copper stop acting like little schools girls "get off facebook"

n arbitrator has ruled that the city of Elgin did not have just cause to fire Elgin Police Officer Jason Lentz, but did have cause to suspend him for six months after Lentz didn't follow orders related to Facebook posts.

The posts were made in August 2014 related to incidents in Ferguson, Missouri.

According to Aaron Wolff's Sept. 30 decision, Lentz is to be reinstated with back pay, full seniority, pension, and all other contract benefits to which he would have been entitled but for six months of time he was off, which will be considered suspension without back pay.

"The arbitrator didn't find that (Lentz) shouldn't have been disciplined, but that six months without pay is what that discipline should be," Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said Friday night.

Swoboda said he had already had an initial discussion Friday with representatives of Policemen's Benevolent and Protective Association Unit 54 which filed the grievance on Lentz's behalf. He said he would study the ruling over the weekend and meet with union members and with Elgin City Manager Sean Stegall and Corporate Counsel William Cogley Monday about the next steps to be taken in the matter.

Swoboda also noted that Mayor Dave Kaptain and City Council had been notified of the findings late Friday afternoon. Kaptain, Stegall and Assistant City Manager Rick Kozal could not be reached for comment Friday night.

In September 2014, the Elgin Police Department fired Lentz after Lentz had made remarks on his Facebook page. He had been on leave Aug. 21, 2014 after he made a comment in response to a news story about slain Ferguson teen Michael Brown purportedly stealing cigars.

The arbitration document recounts Lentz posted that month, "Hmmm … innocent victim my ass. Did society a favor." After being called out by a ranking officer about the post, Lentz eventually changed his comment to just say, "Hmmm."

The document said that Lentz also made a post with a photo of a police officer and a man who are making symbols with their fingers. Lentz's post read "This is Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson. He is also in the Chicago Tribune hugging a protester...appears to be the enemy within," according to the document.

Officials said Lentz lost his job because his conduct undermined the city's credibility and was in violation of the police department's social media guidelines.

The police union brought the matter to arbitration. Hearings were held April 29 and June 4 at Elgin City Hall, according to the document.

Attorney Timothy O'Neil had argued that what Lentz posted was protected by the First Amendment since it was posted on his private page on which he didn't identify himself as an Elgin employee and because he was speaking on a matter of public concern.

Wolff concluded there was no need to decide on the First Amendment issue or other issues in the matter. Rather, he said that city and police staff "released confidential information to the public while the investigation was pending, therefore both violated the collective bargaining agreement."

Wolff also found that Lentz, an 18-year-veteran at the time, must have known that when ordered to take down his post about Brown, shortening his comment to just "Hmmm" was not any more acceptable than what he originally had. He had also been warned not to post anything more about what was going on in Ferguson, but "falsely accused a Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain of being the 'enemy within.'"

"Ignoring those directions would and should have warranted some discipline," the document states. "Taking into account (Lentz's) prior disciplinary record, I find he could have been given a six-month suspension for failure to follow the order he was given. Accordingly, his back pay will be, and is, reduced by six months."

That's nothing new...they would send every traffic accident to Belmont and Western....even the walk-ins who had an accident that occurred in 014.

Hey SCC,

Love your Blog, I'm curious... Did you have nicknames for other previous chiefs besides McStreetLights & J-Fled? If so, what were they?

Stay safe out there and thanks for what you all do.
