Video Everywhere

  • A veteran Chicago Police officer was convicted Friday of using excessive force in the beating of a South Side convenience store clerk.

Aldo Brown was found guilty of one count of one count of using excessive force and aqcuitted of two counts of filing a false police report.

A federal jury began deliberations Thursday and resumed Friday before reaching a verdict in the trial for the 38-year-old former officer. Brown was indicted in 2014 on federal civil rights and obstruction charges in connection with an incident that occurred in September 2012.
A lot stunk about this case and we know very little about it. The articles says "veteran" cop, then "former" two paragraphs later - had he resigned in the interim? That's always a bad sign. His lawyer has promised an appeal, so we'll see if more comes out in the coming months or years.

Cameras...they record. Act accordingly or end up like this guy. It's best to just assume they are absolutely everywhere because most of the time they are.

How ironic! The head of the FBI is complaining that police are not being proactive because of the fear of video, yet it was his own agency that charged Aldo Brown in a federal courthouse with excessive force for being proactive. Brown did what he was hired to do. he received information about gun toting gang members selling weed out of a convenience store that was a front for the drug dealers. He went to the store and found out the tip he received was 100% true and he disarmed and arrested a dangerous criminal who suffered no injuries. And Aldo Brown becomes a criminal defendant for doing his job? Why would we ever be proactive ever again. From no on, we should let the criminals continue to commit crimes and control the neighborhoods instead of the law abiding people in the neighborhood.
How is that for Justice!

You are absolutely correct! The arrestee was not injured. The fact that he carried a gun and was selling weed seemed to not enter into this picture. Was the now convicted cop guilty of too much force? Probably, but not to the extreme to now be a convicted felon and possibly convict. Yes, you can't let emotions get the best of you because the public will not understand. They rarely if ever get into physical situations in their jobs and think the police must be gentile people no matter what happens. This case should have been no more then a complaint, a suspension and possibly some retraining and back to work. Not prison!

They would be protesting what? a felony conviction for excessive force that resulted in no injuries. Maybe you meant to say they would be in full celebration.

I thought TRR reports were completed to protect those working officers. Looks like the U.S. District Attorney is more interested bagging a P.O. for inter office bragging rights and praise from D.C. Who cares about a no name thug in possession of a firearm in an area plagued by off the charts violence.

Read the indictment from the special grand jury which is so concerned about statements contained in the TRR report. Four hundred murders in Chicago and no civil right indictments, no civil right violation arrests nor civil rights violation trials by the holier than thou federal government. The justice department is a joke of epic proportions! By the way what exactly is their priority?Their focus for prosecution is a police officer who is making a difference getting those illegal guns purchased by straw purchasing members of the NRA.

The officer's mistake is being self-motivated trying to make a positive, meaningful difference by enforcing criminal statues and making the neighborhood convenience store safe for children purchasing ice cream, candy, and organic granola bars.

Some coward with a Georgetown law degree will not prosecute those gun toting thugs who are killing indiscriminately violating so many victim's civil rights each and every day. The energies are instead directed against someone who has courage and fortitude to put an end to the carnage and violence. Whose side are the federal prosecutors and the justice dept. on anyway?

O.K. so the perpetrator got kicked and punched. Big fucking deal. He had a gun with a high capacity magazine capable of killing not only other thugs but innocent people of the community who get in the path of the bullets.

Don't they call this area Terror Town. Didn't your FBI not so long ago arrest a gaggle of gang members with guns and drugs with bad ass gang narcotics conspiracy charges? Do a google search yourself and read how the prosecutors talk up all the shooting, murder and narcotics related violence.

The officer at best should be suspended not receive the possibility of a ten year sentence with some misconjugated verbs, an improperly checked box via a mouse click and out of chronological order reports. Simple battery at best in a state court. But political leaders need assistance and proof through federal prosecution for their anti-police agenda. Almost like the federal government condones this violence in urban areas by challenging law enforcement by teaming up with felons, gunmen, drug dealers and murders.

There are some officers who will never, ever, ever get it. But at least the majority do get it. I work in a busy district. I have 25 years on the job. Even when I started this career things were slowly changing and everyone was becoming more cautious- at a very slow pace. Then five years ago when officers throughout the country were losing their jobs and their FREEDOM did most of the officers on my watch wake up. The only ones who are super aggressive and super pro-active are the young kids fresh off the foot patrol. We try to educate them but they know better! I also love hearing their war stories. Some even post it online so their friends and family can press the like button.

Do your job 1000% by the book. Stop this "while on aggressive patrol a/o's observed offender Smith look away and drop a suspect bag of heroin on the ground". Stop that stupid shit.

Never fails, someone will always blindly defend "the thin blue line."

It isn't just simple battery, he handcuffed the guy and kicked him on the ground. He did all of this while representing an official capacity. Had he done his job right he wouldn't be in this position but he didn't and now he can reap what he sowed.

Screw him.

Have slowed down in my old age, but don't you dare tell me that that didn't happen. It happened all the time.....and just like that, and it still does.

I retired after many many years on the job, yes I did some ass kicking, yes I put the boots to somebody, but times have changed, you can not, I repeat CANNOT hit somebody after they have been handcuffed, juries look at these videos and only see the kicking, they can care less about what else happened, now this storeowner will get free passes on everything, if the police fuck with his business he has the defense that they testified against the police and now claims harrassement. There are video cameras in these businesses, they are dangerous, so bottom line it is a them against us issue out there, do your jobs the wise way. Make your overtime money and do what they require, if a boss wants somebody locked up, make them the witness or complainant. I was a Sergeant and always put my name on the complaints if I had hands on, I never middle my guys. I feel bad for this officer, he may have been doing his job, but that stupid ass thin line that we need to cross from time to time, now looks like a river that you are trying to swim in.

And now he is a felon.

There is no good excuse for beating people after they are cuffed and not resisting, no matter how much you think they deserve it. It is an especially bad idea to do so in front of a video camera.

Used to be cops were smart enough to take the bum out in the alley for a private attitude adjustment. Now they do it in public in front of video cameras. Whose fault is that?

I agree. "drops" do happen, as stupid as that sounds. Toss aways do happen, as stupid as that sounds. I have heard defense attorneys criticize this as lies, but they have never been there/ when people are selling drugs on the street anything can happen. This incident in the store where the employee was selling drugs, had them on his person, could not have happened without the knowledge and complicity of the store owner. This was possibly a case of excessive force where administrative action was called for, not criminal action and jail. Is this what it is coming to? Every case of excessive force will call for arrest of the officer and severe consequences? What is excessive and what is not is judged the next day by people who were not there and were not put into that position.
