Prickwrinkle's Budget Passes

  • Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle's $4.5 billion budget won approval Wednesday, and people who shop, stay in hotels and file lawsuits will be paying more next year.

Overall county spending is expected to increase by about $500 million under a budget commissioners approved 12-5. The spending plan depends on a penny-on-the-dollar sales tax increase, a new 1 percent tax on hotels and $20 in additional fees for each lawsuit filed.

Preckwinkle's budget also includes a 20-cents-per-milliliter tax on the liquids that fuel electronic cigarettes and a bullet tax that ranges from 1 cent to 5 cents per round, depending on the type of ammunition.
Can't wait to leave this over-taxed under-served hell hole.

These appear to be wise and thoughtful taxes that will not even be noticed by the average citizen. At the same time they will provide necessary revenue for the county. Go Toni.

She sealed the deal - I WON'T be coming into Cook County for ANYTHING anymore. I barely come in now because I feel ripped off on Parking costs and of course, Sales Tax.

Now bullets? Forget Cabela's in Hoffman Estates - they will be dying more now with both a higher tax AND tax on bullets.

Same with restaurants and hotels - higher taxes. Expect some conventions to drop Chicago like a hot potato.

Better start voting in people who understand the term "Cut Spending".

That one percent sales tax increase also applies to motor fuels so it is also a GAS TAX increase. If possible and safe to store a five gallon gas can (look that up) keep that and a small generator handy. ,

Dear Democratic Tax-aholics.
How I spent this weekend.
Drove to Indiana along 41 to Highland.
At breakfast at a waffle house in one of the many malls that provide free parking, no sending my money to Dubai so I can park in America.
Stopped at Best Buy to buy a flat screen TV, my other one is about 10 years old, which I also bought there. Stopped at Office supply store for, well, office supplies. Crossed street to buy groceries at Meijors. On way home there's a gas station and filled up. Stopped yet to a small gun shop on Kennedy Ave in Hammond. Not to surprisingly, I saw many vehicles w/ Illinois plates & Chicago stickers.
So keep raising taxes. AMF chumps!

"Preckwinkle's budget also includes a 20-cents-per-milliliter tax on the liquids that fuel electronic cigarettes..."

Jesus God. Piddle, piddle, piddle. Have you ever seen a milliliter? You need a hypodermic syringe, or a tiny lab graduate, to measure this.

A) Discourage people from trying these maybe to ease off smoking -- and they were invented so recently that I haven't even had time to look into them, too much stuff at the store as it is and people are busy

B) Disproportionate tax on people who can't easily get out of county to shop

"...and a bullet tax that ranges from 1 cent to 5 cents per round, depending on the type of ammunition."

I guess a brick of .22 just went up by at least $5.00.

C) Drive all taxpaying gun stores out of county

D) Disproportionate tax on recreational shooters

E) No effect whatsoever on criminals, who don't shoot one brick in a lifetime. Never set foot in a gun store, but they never run out of ammo to shoot randomly at houses in the middle of the night...how does this work?

Running out of alphabet here...

"Overall county spending is expected to increase by about $500 million..."

...out of which the average person will see N-O-T-H-I-N-G.

This place is a black hole, a gigantic financial-gravitational suck.

"Cut back" and "outsource" while you raise taxes.

They aren't raking the money into piles and burning it. That means it's going into SOMEONE'S pocket, doesn't it?

End patronage in county government, especially in the Cook County Court Clerk's office and the Assessors office and this would go a long way to reducing the budget.Only necessary jobs and people doing the job descriptions and paid no more then what is paid in private sector and the budget probably would balance.

Taxes bring wealth and prosperity to a city/county. Your local government knows best how to spend it's money. Look at it this way, any tax dollars going into local government is dollars that are not being wasted on frivolous stuff by some citizen.

Boys and girls, go North on 94 to highway 50 Kenosha. 50 miles up from downtown. They have a Gander Mountain for all of your outdoor activity needs. Also a Woodmans grocery that is open 24/7 and is employee owned. No tax on food ! They only take cash or debit cards though...no credit cards at Woodmans. Huge store and they have a large liquor store inside the store.
They also have gas pumps and it is usually 35-40 cents cheaper than here. A Best Buy, a Dicks, A Costco, Target, Sports Authority, Walgreens, Etc. One stop shopping, no tax on food, and the much lower Wisconsin taxes on everything else. And FREE parking!!
Stop at Culvers or BWWings, the Brat Stop for a bite and a suds and have a nice relaxing ride back home with your bank account still in the black.
Thanks Rahm and Toni.

Add in the property tax hike, and water tax hike, and your looking at a ghost town in a few decades. No middle class, or lower class type will be able to afford a home.
