Detective Exam Announced

Sign up begins immediately.

Test is 07 May.

Parts One and Two will be given the same day.

What? Why? No break? No waiting months for Part One results before being eligible for Part Two? This is unusual.

We've heard the paid study groups are scrambling.

The "invitation only" groups at HQ are in a dither as to how their "students" are going to memorize twice the data in half the time.

Expect a lot of long weekends (and weekdays) studying.

I know it's a scan-tron type test, but it will never happen...

Absolutely the best job on the department. Lots of paperwork but with it can come great satisfaction in taking violent criminals off the street. I left a few years ago to make Sergeant and have regretted it every day since.

"NON-TARGETED" ATTACK AGAIN -- MACHETE NOT REALLY A WEAPON

At least 4 injured in machete attack at Ohio restaurant

Published February 12, 2016 FoxNews.com

"At least four people were injured in a machete attack at an Ohio restaurant before police shot and killed the suspect Thursday night.

"The attack occurred at Nazareth Restaurant and Deli, a Mediterranean eatery, in Columbus. Police said the unidentified man walked into the restaurant, had a conversation with an employee and left.

"About a half hour later, the suspected attacker returned, approached a man and a woman at a table near the doorway and started his rampage.

“He came in and started beating up on another man, I thought it was a personal thing. Then he just started down the row hitting everybody; people were bleeding,” Karen Bass, a restaurant patron, told My Fox 28 Columbus.

"The man eventually fled the scene in a white car and led police on a short chase. Officers forced him off the road a few miles away. When the suspect got out of his car, police said they tried unsuccessfully to use a stun gun on him.

"Columbus police Sgt. Rick Weiner said, "At that point he had a machete and another knife in his hand and he lunged across the hood at the officers."

"That's when police said an officer shot and killed the man. It remained unclear what sparked the attacks.

“There was no rhyme or reason as to who he was going after,” said Weiner. “There’s nothing that leads us to believe that this is anything but a random attack."

"The Columbus Dispatch reported that the FBI is assisting in the investigation, but Weiner didn't clarify why."

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/02/12/at-least-4-injured-in-machete-attack-at-ohio-restaurant.html

"Mediterranean?"

"AHLAN WAH SAHLAN!" (That means "Welcome" in Arabic!)

"We have been serving the Columbus community for over 20 years and specialize in Middle Eastern cuisine."

"The machete-[wielder] asked the owner where he was from (Christian from Israel) and came back an hour later swinging..."

Just random...not "targeted," not "Islamic terrorism," no "hate crime" here.

Move along.

For decades now, Special Groups run by the vary people who write the tests have been feeding the answers to the "Chosen". And the result has been the Promotion of incompetence and corruption. If one good thing comes from the scrutiny by the Feds, let it be the end of rigged promotional exams. If anyone hears of any Group meeting in secret, call the Feds. This bullshit has got to end. Being a Detective is the best job in the department. Anyone who says different is wrong. You are treated like and adult so YOU ARE EXPECTED TO ACT LIKE AN ADULT. The people who don t like this job are the ones who never do their job. Supervisors in the D don't bother you as long as you handle your jobs. Period. Typing sucks if you don't stay on top of it snowballs FAST. The job has changed but the key is and always has been being able to talk to people. ERI is never going away. Talking to offenders under the camera is no big deal.......... get them talking keep them talking.
Be comfortable reciting the Miranda warnings. Do not read them from the FOP BOOK. There are only things you are required to inform a person in custody, 4.
1 you have the right to remain silent. 2 anything you say may be used against you in a court of law 3 You have the right to an attorney. 4 If you want and attorney and can not afford one will be appointed for you, for free. (the for free is what the CCSAO wants) Juveniles require the additional statement to them that You will be charged as an adult in automatic transfer cases, and you maybe charged as an adult in the other cases. That's all you need to inform the offender.
Best job in the Department !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take the test you wont be sorry

Have things changed that much? I was a detective in homicide and I thought it was the greatest job in the greatest unit with the greatest bunch of people that I ever had. My mistake was that I took the sergeants exam and made it. I should have stayed in the area. But, as I recall from my exam and some subsequent exams that I helped people do well on, there was a logic portion to the exam. If there is in this one, you can prepare for it and do well by buying logic solution books at the book store and practice them. They use a grid system to solve the problems and the same grid system can be used to solve any logic problem. I hope this helps.

Detective is the worst job in the department. The typing and paperwork never ends. You'll age quickly from the stress and overtime. Every detective I know is either divorced, has a wife running around on him, overweight, has health problems, and/or suffers from a lack of proper sleep. You'll be told a million times it's the best job in the department, but it's not true. The extra $300 a month take home pay is not worth your mental and physical health. Stay on a beat car, answer calls, and go home safe every day.

Both tests in one day, yet you still don't get part 1 scan-tron answers until months later. Part one should be graded immediately on site in the presence of you and an inspector, it's completely possible because it's scan-tron. Those that pass will take part 2. Yet the department still wants to hide the grading of part 1 results from all the candidates. Why? So the Chosen Ones can still pass past 1. Wouldn't it save a ton of effort and money if only those that passed took part 2? Yes, but you can't fix it when it's graded in plain view. Best of luck to those who take it.

As long as the thugs and gangbangers are just killing each other, who gives a fuck about the clearance rate? If the few homicides involving actual innocent citizens are solved, that's all that matters. More dead bangers is a good thing. Let them all kill each other. If they're locked up, they can't shoot each other.

Take The test! No matter what people tell you its way better than working in patrol. If you don't mind working there is plenty of OT if you want. If you don't want a lot of OT there are spots for you too. It's a lot more responsibility and a lot of paperwork but it is manageable. Good luck to everyone who takes it and I hope to see you at an area soon.

No thanks.. With that job its your home life or your job. Far too many hours.

2/12/2016 06:13:00 AM

Isn't that the truth. If you're one of those soft in the head types that puts the job before their family and likes being at work more than being at home and spending time with your wife and kids, then this is the job for you. If you're one of those people that can't get enough overtime, needs 2 summer homes, multiple new cars, and a 3 week Hawaiian vacation every year, then this is the job for you. If you're one of those officers that enjoys hanging around court all day on their days off because you have nothing better to do with your life, then this job is for you.

If you're one of those officers that can't stand to stay an hour past check off or go to court, then I highly recommend you pass this one up. If you can't type at least 50 words a minute, need spell check, or can't string a coherent sentence together, then I recommend you pass this one up. Those ugly ass reports that some of you turn in that look like a 1st grader wrote them aren't going to fly in the D-Unit. There are sergeants that will literally kick your reports back filled with red ink corrections. If you're an incompetent fool then I suggest you wait for a meritorious sergeant spot because there's no hiding in the D-Unit. Your incompetence will be known by all.

To all the ones telling the test takers that being a detective sucks, why not let them figure that out for themselves. If they don't like detective position they can always go back to patrol. And yes, I speak from experience as being a detective since 1998. Yes some days are bad but more are good. And if it was that bad I would have gone back to patrol. (NOT)

Is, how to re-classify homicides as death investigations going to be on the new test????

2/12/2016 07:21:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You CAN make it legit. No matter what stats say, race is not the a preeminent factor, trust me I am speaking from personal experience. I have had individuals of all ethnic groups, including my own, tell me that I must have known someone to have scored successfully.

Nonbelievers never commit fully to studying and the sacrifice it takes. But as time goes on, more people are realizing that anyone can score off the list once they understand the testing process. I spent 6 months just researching testing techniques without reading an order. While I did not receive a top score, the studying got me a score that put me in the game.

Took the 1998 detective and scored 500 or so. Made it off the next to last list and it was a great job then.

Took the 2001 Sgts exam. Bombed it with a score of nearly 1000, I was pissed at first. Then introspectively I realized that I got the score that I deserved and vowed to do better.

Took the 2007 Sgts exam and scored around 200 or so and made it. It has been a dynamic experience and I am fortunate to have worked and be working with members of all ranks.

Currently under 100 on the current Lt. exam. If I make it good, if not it's ok I tried. My mom and dad always told me that I am promised nothing in this life.....and this job for that matter

I consider myself lucky to have done been able to take these exams in a span of just over 20 years.

Before being promoted every time, I wonder if I will have what it takes be effective in the rank, to be respected by all those I will work with. I have to add, detective is a great job, and sgt. is better...

In my experience in life and this job, if you give respect 80% of the time you will get it in return. 10% of people will make you prove it to them thorough action, and 10% are just too far gone to be reached and will never comply.

Some will talk shit behind your back. They will say you made it because of____________, when in fact, they are usually bitter, jealous, or did not put in time to study. That's life. Someone will always not like you for whatever reason, so what. Life ain't always fair.

IMHO, try not to take oneself to seriously, try to get along with others, it is OK to say you don't know something (just try to find the answer), and try to earn the respect of the guys doing the work by pitching in when necessary, but never compromise your responsibilities in order to be liked.

Bosses are always looking for good people of all ranks. You will be able to move around the Department when people see you are knowledgeable, hard working, with a great attitude, thereby creating your own "whack".

Don't waste your money on CPD Test Prep. The guy who owns that company is Brad Woods and some sgt. from 020. They are a joke. I signed up for their sgt. test. Here is a list of their follies: 1. They didn't inform people until week two or week three of their classes. 2. They didn't give out the usb drive to everyone. They ran out of them and some people had to wait. 3. On week six or seven they moved their location from the high school auditorium to across the street. The only problem was they didn't inform others. The only way people found out was they saw others walking to the new location across the street. When I asked why they didn't post any flyers or have someone direct us to the new location the sergeant's wife just had a blank look on her face. 4. They kept promising that they will have essay practice exams but that never happened. 5. CPD Test Prep and Brad Woods are a joke. Avoid them like the plague.

My partner took Bernstein for the sgt. test. They had their act together. But in all reality, they are not worth it. Save your money. Bernstein isn't cheap. If you want the information organized then just join one of the ethnic police organizations. Even if you are not Latino, Asian or Irish, they can not deny you membership. You pay a small amount to join them and then you pay a reasonable amount ($25 to $50) to get their organized study guides. They also have classes. Or you can just take the study materials and study on your own.

For those who will be taking the detective exam good luck.

Do yourself a favor and stay in patrol. It's not the job it used to be. Be prepared to have no life, terrible health, lots of stress, a nice long commute in most cases, and to age rapidly. For those of you that refuse to listen, I suggest learning how to type properly because you're going to be typing reports until your fingers bleed. They need to double the current amount of detectives for things to be half way decent again and I just don't see that happening especially with all the retirements that are going to be taking place in the D-Unit in the next few years. Oh, and unless you have 24 years on the job, be prepared to enjoy your shit furloughs too. Currently the lowest seniority detective in the entire unit has 14 years on the job.

Only true if you work homicide, a lot of over time, long hours, always under pressure to solve, bosses always want to know what's going on in your case and tedious work. I work RBT and couldn't be happier; enough OT to keep me satisfied and no pressure. SVU is even easier.

The city took the advice of accountants and the "do more with less" motto of the private sector and applied it to a police department at the citizens expense. Well guess what it blew up in their face and the DOJ is here. Now they are scrambling to raise the staffing, training and equipment to acceptable levels before the city is mandated to do so by a judge. Beleive it or not it might be a good thing they are here. My prediction is the the test, grading and promotions will be done in record time before the DOJ investigation is completed in 10 months.

Yes, very familiar with it. And I will keep doing my job. We don't get paid to do nothing. If you show up at a real job and do nothing you get fired. This is my opinion based on being a Detective for one year now.

Being a Detective is still a great job. If you're in that "rut" that patrol eventually brings to most semi-working cops, it's like a new lease on life as a cop again.

You are now treated like an adult. You get assignments, nobody is going to check up on you, see if your doing it right, give you moral support etc. You made it here (legitimately, right?) so you're expected to be smart enough figure it out. It's amazing how you go from zero responsibility for 20 years, to being the lead dick on a homicide in only 4 months. That's cool, man.

It's also wonderful to actually use your brain again. Figure out dudes M.O, do a lengthy interrogation. Study the crime scene, find important evidence, put together nicknames on contact cards to actual offenders. I don't know, I really enjoy it, kinda the reason I became a cop in the first place.

I'm sorry some of the other new dicks don't like it, but I got to ask you this. The youngest guys promoted had a minimum of 14yrs on the job. Having that much time on minimum, how did you not know what to expect when you took the job?

Only true if you work homicide, a lot of over time, long hours, always under pressure to solve, bosses always want to know what's going on in your case and tedious work. I work RBT and couldn't be happier; enough OT to keep me satisfied and no pressure. SVU is even easier.
2/12/2016 11:34:00 PM

Yeah well most of the new guys aren't going to get RBT on days. You telling everyone how great the D Unit is, is like the person handing out radios telling everyone how great patrol is. SVU is where you go when you're an incompetent fuck up or you're being "punished".

Here's a little advice from a retired detective. Hang in there. I think everyone oof us initially felt that way. It gets better once you settle in and get used to it. It's a good job and helps with you pension. Gook luck, it only gets better and easier
2/12/2016 05:27:00 PM

Unless you retired within the last 2 years nobody wants your advice because it's irrelevant. The job changed so much in the last five years that it's not the same job that you're probably talking about.

I was always amazed at McCarthy - he brought everything NYC to CHicago - except the ratio of patrol:detectives

Yes, very familiar with it. And I will keep doing my job. We don't get paid to do nothing. If you show up at a real job and do nothing you get fired. If you kill someone on this job be sure you acted appropriately so you don't get indicted. Just because you shoot someone doesn't mean it's a good shoot, it's on you then. You knew that (I hope) when you took the job. Don't assume the shoot first ask questions letter attitude still flies because it doesn't. Too many coppers always say rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6... I agree, but how about we just use our heads, the law and our training to avoid both. You see, in Chicago we blow off our training because we think we are above it or we are the real deal and are so tuff on the street no fool in the academy can teach us anything.. This is why when coppers have to testify at depositions they get eaten alive.. They don't know the law, policy or procedures. If you know this stuff it will save your life and your career.. Also, the gun nut hardos just wanna get into a shooting because it shows how awesome of a shot they are.. We all know the guys... Use your training and learn something and don't end up like this guy or van dyke who I really hate to say stepped on his own wang and screwed up

I hope everyone is familiar with the guilty Liang verdict from New York City. Act accordingly.

I think everyone is familiar with it. The rookie officer had an "accidental discharge" and killed a person. However, there is nothing "accidental" about pulling the trigger on a gun. Gun's don't just "go off." It is called a negligent discharge. It is a tragic incident for the victim, the family, and also the officer and his family. However, the officer F*CKED UP, BIG TIME!!!!

Nobody said they have their own seniority. The OP said that the lowest seniority in the D Unit is 14 years. In other words if you have 14 years on the job and were enjoying a 6, 7, 8, or 9 furlough, get ready to start enjoying your 1 Full when you get made.

Obviously you're not a detective. RBT is busy as hell. Armed robberies are out of control in this city....the work NEVER ends. And SVU gets the biggest clusterfucks I've ever seen and the cases never friggen go away. I would not recommend anybody taking the Det. test. It's the most work and the most stressful job in the department. You're vision will be shot in about a year from all the friggen typing.

I recommend Commander Voulgaris's study group. Its the Greek organization however he welcomes everyone. Class sizes are limited and all he asks is your dedication to class and a small donation for paper and incidentals. I am not Greek, and lived far away from the class location but I was dedicated and believe his class helped me get prepare for the test I was promoted off. I recommended others to his class and they scored well also. Save your money!!!

I concur and very well said!

Actually, yes. I was shot at from the breezeway at 36th & State St. and was running after the shooter. I stopped, took good aim at the gun holding offender who had just shot at me and decided that it wasn't worth the risk of putting a slug into some 9 year old who was coming out of the Federal building on her way to school. A dick who had been riding by when this happened was hot on my heels also chasing the shooter with me. They are still the police.

Detective is the most stresfull job in this department. Tons of typing, deadlines, court, lawsuits. However, it's also one of the most satisfying jobs in this department. You get to find and put away some really bad guys. You get to help, the right way, and sometimes teach some valuable lessons to patrol officers. You get to help real victims that are devastated even if it's just a simple burglary. Often times you are the only advocate for a victim, a child or a senior. Patrol is critical. A good patrol officer is invaluable. Good detective work starts with a good patrol officer. But Stay in patrol if you want to go home without a worry in the world about tomorrow. Being a detective is a sacrifice. Any free time I have I spend with my kids. I don't go drinking, golfing or whatever. Some of the comments above are disheartening. Especially at a time when we need to watch each other because nobody else is. I for one am proud to be a detective. And maybe it's corny to say, I'm also proud to be a Chicago Police officer and in the company of so many good people. It's time to bond together. Divisive comments and attitude truly hurts all if us.

I was a Youth Investigator and I will tell you what, I knew my shit. I know Youth Investigators who have done more on some of their cases than a whole lot of Big City Heat ever did. Suspend, suspend, suspend. You think SVU Detectives get to say "no contact, send letter, suspend." No, they don't.

I was never out of my league and fit right in to the Detective Division. I know SVU detectives who are top notch investigators. There are quite a few in Area North who are top notch. They are not and have never been out of their league. Stay retired. I am sure you were an absolute joy to work with.

I concur and very well said!

A post that actually makes sense and probably reflects the silent majority who don't post on here. Well done, Sergeant!

Wow, does anyone want to be the real police anymore. I retire 4 years ago and was a dick for 20 years. Less beefing and more laughing will get you to the end. Being a dick is what you make it to be. Respect and be good to the patrol guys will make their day. So the fuck what they think their case is great when it is not. Take the time to mentor some patrol guys, they are the hero' of the CPD, not dicks. The dick' should make certain the beat guy gets all the credit for a great pinch.
Studying for the test will be a hit or miss. You ghetto street patrol guys handle every crime on the books in two years.
The only beef I had was when SVU youth officers got to be detectives and that was a joke. They were out of their league, they knew shit and thought they did.
Kid', don't give up on the job and start hating, that is worse then just doing what you where hired to do. Salary is decent and if you really always wanted to be the police, and it was a calling , you will make it to the end.
Nless all you great street copper', patrol or dick'.

Hating on all SVU dicks shows how clueless you are. Some of the most knowledgeable detectives are in SVU and chose to be there, after having worked complicated investigations equal to HGS and RBT. Maybe back in the day this may have been true, but not anymore. Putting down other detectives and what they choose to investigate show lack of class and no understanding of what they do, which is usually the case for haters.

From a current SVU detective who has worked both HGS and RBT.

I understand for situations like that and i'm glad you're ok but how many times do dicks keep p/o's waiting after the p/o has notified the area? Sometimes 3 hours or more before the dick shows up. I guess dicks don't comprehend that p/o's have appetites too and would like to eat sometime during their shift. They make the p/o sit on DOAs for a long time. Needless to say its not a real pleasant experience for the p/o. You can get your coffee or meal downtown after you make your 10 minute appearance at the DOA.

No you can't. You can give up your D2A or D2 status and return to D1. You can not give up a civil service rank. Your only out is to quit. Go easy on the mean spirited sarcasm next time. It seems there's a good chance you'll be wrong.

There will be one more class from the old detectives list. It takes a while for a new test process to finish up. The old detectives list is up and active and will be until the new list is certified by the City Council.

Years back in area 5 the midnight ducks were a joke. You would get in thier with an arrest and after notifying them in person you would wait maybe 2 hours for a dick. They would leave and get lost. Then when they finally got in They would have an attitude and say. You got nothing kid. This being said by a punk Ass dick younger then me. As a rule I would only call them to get a notification name or when I knew I had a winner. I'm told things are still the same.

It seems a lot of people really don't know some fine details about their job. When you are promoted to sergeant, or lieutenant, or captain or even exempt, you in fact resign from your previous position. That is why your seniority starts over. This fact is ignored for exempts to include captains and this policy has never been followed. But, it was talked about when the city was talking about layoffs in the mid 80's. The layoff would be by rank and you could not flop backwards.

This only applies to career service but not appointed positions. Detective and exempt assignments are appointments...you can be dumped from them or resign, and you must be restored to your previous career service position. You cannot resign from sgt., or lt, without resigning from the job

You clearly have no idea how anything works and no clue what the fuck you're talking about. If you think a fucking death investigation takes 10 minutes don't waste your time taking the new exam because you'll be ranked 8000 on the list. Also, did it ever occur to your ignorant ass that when you notify the area that there may not be any detectives available at that particular moment to send out and that your job isn't the only one that requires detectives? No? I guess everything takes a back seat to your shit because you're another millenial that mommy told was the center of the universe. Everybody drop what you're doing because the millenial with 2 years on the job wants his lunch break.

Detective is not the same as exempt. The rank of detective is a tested for and contractually protected position and the department must have just cause to remove an officer from that rank. And yes, it is a rank and it is a promotion. It's just not a supervisory position. Exempt is an appointed rank and an individual can be removed from that rank at any time without just cause and without reason. See the difference?

When they call Mommy or Daddy the exempt you'll be flying there lights and sirens. Don't think they won't, happens more times than I care to remember.Don't think your milquetoast Sgt or Lt is going to be your corner either

Great Post until you came up with that create your own "Whack" Fairy Tale . You & I both know that's a Big Crock of Shit. Name your unit, watch, dist, I'll tell you that personally, but don't bullshit people that there's still an air of legitimacy on this job, it disingenuous and flat out wrong.

Detective is not a rank you idiot, its a title code(po assigned as a detective).

It's definitely a promotion, and if you dont take the test you're an idiot, but it is most definitely not a rank.

Section 8.6 — Detectives, Evidence Technicians, Police Laboratory Technicians, Forensic
Investigators and Field Training Officers
The Employer agrees not to remove Officers in the position of Detective except for just cause.
During this Agreement, the Employer agrees that the ranks of Detective, Evidence Technician,
Police Laboratory Technician, Forensic Investigator and Field Training Officer will not be
eliminated from the budget.

That excerpt is taken right from your own contract morons. Why don't you read it real good and concentrate on the last sentence. We certainly have a lot of uneducated idiots in this department.

Detective isn't a CPD rank fool.

Straight from the GO 01-02

3A Order of Rank

A Superintendent
B First Deputy Superintendent
C Chief
D Deputy Chief
E Commander, Director, Coordinator
F Captain
G Lieutenant
H Sergeant
I Police Officer
Note: A police officer assigned to D2 or D2A PAYGRADE POSITION is equivalent to the rank of police officer

"Equivalent to the RANK of police officer" How fucking dense are you dude? Just admit that you were wrong and move on. The word rank denotes a position in an organization. Police officer is a rank, detective is a rank, fto is a rank. If you don't understand the English language then we can't help you.

PAYGRADE POSITION dumbfuck, in all your examples you left out the first four words "police officer assigned as."

The RANKS are spelled out stupid. You want to live in a fantasy world, go ahead, it's not a rank in the Chicago Police Department. It is a PAYGRADE dummy. Using your fucked up logic tact is rank, gang enforcement is a rank, narcotics is rank, SWAT is a rank, working in xxx district is a rank, DSS is a rank, latent print examiner is rank, legal officer is rank, timekeeper is a rank, etc.

While the hamster wheel spins in your peanut brain look up what the word EQUIVALENT means.
