Rush Rush Rush

  • The city of Chicago promised Tuesday to start more quickly releasing footage after police shootings, while activists critical of how authorities handled the videotaped fatal shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald sought to have a special prosecutor take over the case.

They're the latest reactions to the shattered public trust in police officers, prosecutors and City Hall: One by attorneys, clergymen and some elected officials who say they've lost faith in Cook County's top prosecutor, and the other by a mayor trying to restore people's confidence in his office and police department.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has heard repeated calls to step down, said he supported the new video policy recommended by the task force he created after the McDonald footage was released. His spokesman, Adam Collins, said the recommendations would be implemented immediately.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates officer-involved shootings, plans to release videos and other evidence in all new cases as well as current investigations. The videos and other evidence would be released within 60 days, but law enforcement agencies can seek to delay that by another 30 days.
This is a purely political move, based solely on appeasing certain elements who favor a rush to judgement, no matter what it means in regard to actually putting together a case that will stand up in court and withstand repeated appeals.

Remember what happened in Ferguson - every single witness interviewed, sometimes multiple times, every single bit of video, methodically dismantled, analyzed and broken down by frame, a full blown investigation by not one, not two, but three different law enforcement organizations. And the end result? The officer was completely exonerated of every allegation made against him, but he still will never find work in his chosen profession.

That takes too long for the race-baiters and the "rush-to-judgement" crowd. They don't want an actual investigation that will take months and months and might actually prove the police acted within the scope of the law. They want a lynching, plain and simple.

The Black community, and the social justice folks must be appeased. They have the superior right, and the demand of social justice behind them. If there is nothing damning on the videos and the police acted completely correctly then it should be known immediately. If not, the wrongdoing is like a boil that needs to be immediately lanced and drained.

O.K., here's a question directly related to these tapes. The McDonald tape was released and within 48 hrs. Officer Van Dyke was charged. So that means the tape was evidence. Isn't withholding evidence Obstruction of Justice? Who gave the order to withhold that tape from the public? McCarthy, Rahm? Alvarez acted as if she had not seen it, and for that reason upon seeing it with the public, she charged the Officer. Was this her "Cover" or had she really been kept in the dark for over 400 days? But for over 400 days, somebody held that tape back. Now in 20/20 hindsight, we all know that Rahm was running against a Minority candidate, so release of the tape would have been fatal to his pursuit. And Rahm, the smartest guy in the room, also knew that video was toxic. The failure to release the video was intentional, and whomever did it Obstructed Justice, plain and simple. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? If it was a public official, then the FBI should come in. Or are they too busy trying to cover Hillary's tracks.

I respond:

There are other countries that are very aware of the corruption of the American legal/media systems.

The Dominican Republic is a great place for American ex pats. It's on the same island as Haiti so locals, the government are certainly aware of criminal, racial realities.

Darren Wilson should be encouraged to change his name to something more hispanic and get a great job in the Dominican Republic.

It's pretty much a lock that any time somebody DOESN'T want video released, it's because it tells the TRUTH, be it the beating of Karolina Obrycka or Michael Brown robbing a convenience store. The Brown family lawyer pretty much said it all when he complained about the "gentle giant" being "smeered" by UNEDITED VIDEO. Likewise Patrick Lynch in his whining about the video of James Baker being assaulted.

The perpetrator, be he cop or private sector criminal NEVER wants you to believe your lying eyes.

This is an effort to divert notice from the fact that the police weren't the ones who really withheld the video but rather City Hall politics are why the video got withheld. Definitely an effort to be able to say things are being changed so that Rahm and Anita can save their necks. I would actually like to see a special prosecutor appointed that will actually cause this to be (even better) known that it is but we'd probably end up with a dog and pony show instead.

Uh....not to get technical, but wouldn't releasing ***all*** videos of police involved shootings long before any criminal trial starts -- like when the suspect is only wounded -- have a prejudicial effect on potential Jurors?

In 'theory', under normal times and circumstances that prejudicial effect would be Pro Prosecution when showing a video of an armed suspect first resisting arrest and then 'attacking' the officer, or about to with some weapon; gun, knife, bat, brick, whatever.

But these aren't normal times, and right now the climate in 'the community' isn't exactly Pro Prosecution, and it sure as Hell isn't Pro Police. So no matter WHAT is shown on a video the odds are any jurors would be leaning in the suspects favor. Especially, in my humble opinion, in a Cook County jury pool.

Now I'm pretty sure that Defense Attorneys and Judges don't like **any** prejudicial information tainting a trial. And once seen, there's no way to 'un-see' something, especially a video of police shooting a suspect.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds but personally I don't see how releasing these videos early will benefit anyone. It sure as Hell won't be a benefit to society.

Show the budget items on adding tasers, and body cameras and what additional taxes and fees will be added to supply and service and train them. Then referendum time and let the people choose how they want to spend their money not the ACLU.

Do the same for all these silly ideas the vocal criminal supporter protestors want to institute to give them selves free reign to sel their dope without police harassment. Also the referendum that the alderman and mayor can be investigated and see who is what gangs are paying them to bash the police and make it hard for the police to stop criminals and make neighborhoods safe.

The City is playing fast and loose with laws such as investigating police shooting by a not other agency. Bad guys should be embarrassed. why protect the public in their drunken act or when they can't monitor their offspring.

2 thing will happen the public will ask why their private moments are comical and the other is the City will have to fight the FOIA law to have it stopped causing RAHM to have to take a stand.

A lot of people probably do not grasp the shattering changes in society brought on by the introduction of the small video camera. Probably you have to be a little older to remember what things used to be like.

I was in the small minority willing to lug around several pounds of Nikons, then develop the film, do all the printing, etc. I never imagined that Eastman Kodak would go bankrupt -- nor did I feel it necessary to shoot 57 pictures of the sales clerk every time I bought a candy bar, hoping for some sort of "confrontation."

Much of today's photography is miraculous, and much of it is just plain miserable. Every ten-second conversation with a parking lot attendant, every restaurant receipt, every piece of litter on the street must be extensively documented, recorded, and sent out to the entire world. I really don't care to see how your shoelace broke, or how you dropped a teaspoon.

We have truly entered the predicted Age of Surveillance -- and no NKVD, no Stasi, could ever have had the manpower to intrude on the smallest aspects of daily life in the way that we are voluntarily doing it to each other.

We now have Government By Video, and Trial By Instagram -- with people spending their days searching for something, anything that will outrage them.

F__ebook has over a billion users -- a significant number of whom have committed murder, gotten divorced, lost their jobs, or become embroiled in lawsuits in events related to the use of this service. CEO Mark Zuckerberg now feels it necessary to live with 18 bodyguards, who work in shifts.

A $7 million house in Palo Alto -- with an additional $35 million having been spent to acquire and clear adjacent properties -- can still be a prison.

Enjoy.

No.

The authorities tasked with ensuring justice had the 'evidence'.

The public, as a whole, has NO authority relevant to ensuring 'justice'.

Only when individual members of the public are selected for jury duty do those members, and those individual members only, become a vital part of ensuring justice.

And that occurs only after the process of ensuring justice proceeds to indictment.

"The failure to release the video was intentional, and whomever did it Obstructed Justice, plain and simple."

Again, no.

Plain and simple.

Now, if you are suggesting, implying, presuming or otherwise saying that any or all authorities empowered by law were denied access to this 'evidence' you speak of, well, that's a horse's ass of a different color.

2/17/2016 08:38:00 AM

Your premise is faulty. You have ZERO understanding of the concept of 'withholding evidence'.

On officer Wilson in Ferguson MO

"The officer was completely exonerated of every allegation made against him, but he still will never find work in his chosen profession."

2/17/2016 08:40:00 AM

Oh, yeah, who doesn't want to live on the same island as HAITI?

The in car camera system should be available for on-line viewing by everyone. Put it on a website.

*******************************************

Oh em gee...like totes....you think my gyno can wear a camera around his neck so I can make sure he is professional and doing the right thing at all times? Let's just put them in every room of every hospital since people's lives are in their hands. Can we get some in classrooms so we can watch our kids at all times and hey, let's put them in cabs, ambulances, attorneys offices to make sure everything is kosher. Hell let's install them everywhere. Who cares about an officers rights or privacy. Let's do it in the name of transparency.

All we need in this wonderful era of policing is someone like yourself who has a fb law degree to pick apart our every move and decision.

Here is an idea for the new Supt.

No more contact cards for street stops. Screw the ACLU. Contact card only for contact of a person that the info might help out in a crime already but not enough info now.

Hi love. Contact cards are now ISR's. ISR'S are not just a cpd thing. Not sure if you are aware of this. Receipts are not either. You will find a illinois statue if you so choose to search.

I'm the public. I do not want to see any video of any shootings. I'm probably the only person that hasn't seen, refuses to see, the Laquan McDonald video. I'm a librarian and would I want the world to judge me on a reference interview? Well, no. Police have their jobs, for which I am grateful--thank you, officers--and I have mine. My last encounter with an officer was a squad pulling up on me while I was waiting for a bus to work and reading my newspaper.
"You reading that paper?", the officer asked.
"Yes officer", I replied.
"Stop it", he said, "you're smart enough."
Put a smile on my face and I knew he was looking out for this old lady. God bless every one of you and you're in my prayers.

OT: Chicago panhandlers win in court over Sheriff’s Office

CHICAGO (FOX 32 / AP) - A jury at a federal civil trial Thursday awarded $1,500 each to two panhandlers who took one of the nation's largest sheriff's offices to court for violating their constitutional right to ask passers-by for money.

Jurors returned after just four hours of deliberations with a finding that the failure of the Cook County Sheriff's Office to train deputies on panhandler rights led its deputies to order Kim Pindak, 63, and Sam Phillips, 57, to stop begging on Daley Plaza, a busy public square in downtown Chicago. Pindak and Phillips said the deputies' actions violated their free-speech rights under the First Amendment.

Police videos involving shootings should not be released to the media, especially if a criminal charges are placed against any officer. They wouldn't show the video on the media for these scum buckets that murder each other. So how can it be any different? Van Dyke will not receive a fair trial once the video was released. Due process wasn't given fairly to him & his trial should be moved to Springfield based on prejudice judges at 26/cal.. & the video should not be allowed as evidence due to it is has bias tendencies. If it would have been a black cop killing a black teen it would not have made a racial impact.

So...

Rahm promises to "expedite" Officer Involved Shooting videos
to show "transparency," damn a thorough investigation, fuck the facts
and no heed paid to due process?

#blm Mob says:

"This is payback for all that corruption an' racism an' genocidin' y'all
been doin' to owwa young black mens!"

ACLU says:

"Bravo! Power To The People and Folks too!
This is our chance to write the playbook on taking
over and destroying a large, democratic urban
center Police Department. Then we'll have a model
for doing it nation-wide since CPD represents the
toughest old style warrior Policing nut to crack.
We owe great thanks to the political cowardice of
Mayor Emanuel for facilitating this."

There's also an undercurrent of civil rights lawyers
wanting to join their Loevy and PLO brethren in
obtaining and maintaining a more or less permanent
feeding place at the municipal corporate money trough.

DOJ says:

"Brother's Keeper sicced us on you because you're not
buying into the National Police he desires for his personal
Brown Shirts so he can rule by executive order and usher
in the fundamental change he's always speechifying about."

Joyful Haters say:

"Hah! You beefy, heavy-handed ex-Catholic League footballers and wrestlers
from Mt. Greenwood are going to be dragged down many rungs on the social
order ladder. Sucks to be you, so lose your surly demeanor, stop your rebellious
talk about going home to your families no matter what and acknowledge that you've
been wrong for resorting to your fists and guns so quickly without giving other's a chance
to express their frustration with how you guys enforce the law."

Turning Chicago Policing into a dangerous game of "Mother May I."

Sometimes...
M/Fer needs to be snatched up by his throat and
belt buckle and magically turned into a smoking
crater in the floor/pavement/ground with only his
ears and hooves or paws sticking out of the hole.

The Policeman's North Star is the Illinois Criminal Codes.

Those with an expressed interest in destroying Policing
don't have the stones to properly petition to have those
"brutal and racist laws" changed, so they're using ginned-up
public outrage to get the changes they desire.
