- Here it is, the most Chicago news item of winter 2016 and also of human history: A Chicago Streets and Sanitation Department driver was shot at while clearing the streets in a snowplow on Sunday [...]
No one was injured.
The incident took place around 2:30 p.m. in West Garfield Park, near the intersection of West Lake Street and North Kostner Avenue.
At first, we imagined it was a pedestrian firing at the plow, since everyone in the ghetto walks in the street at the first sign of a snowflake. Then we heard it was probably a drive-by from a previous altercation, so we thought, "Who the hell would want to go anywhere fast under Lake Street?" That is some seriously suicidal driving on dry pavement...and with Rahm's bike lanes reducing the available acreage by half? Once a month to gas up the VRI car is plenty for us.
In any case, that neighborhood doesn't want the police around. Now they don't want the plows around. We pull CFD out of the 'hood and we can start shutting off the lights in the non-taxpaying portions of the city...like Detroit.

The aggrieved motorist merely offered a robust shout of encouragement - the kind he learned as Captain of the Rowing Team at Harvard. However the snowplow driver reacted like a Dartmouth man or something and believe me from then on, the game was afoot ! Insults were hurled back and forth faster than a lacrosse match and before you knew it, the snowplow driver left the motorist no choice. A pearl-handled derringer was retrieved and Harvard's honor was restored ! No harm done and nobody soiled their monogrammed blazer.
This is how disputes are settled among men of honor on the West Side. Carry on....

Here is another reason why a S/S snow plow might get shot or shot at: the pedestrian was pelted by a shower of rock salt.

I'm curious. To what extent do ghetto dwelling assholes need to go to before liberals wake the fuck up? The way it was explained to me by some hood rat is they walk in the street to avoid being shot by shitheads in the buildings - they feel it's safer - they can duck behind a parked car...
As for the plow driver - you're in a truck with a plow. Shithead is in a car - put the plow up, and ram the shit out of that vehicle with it... do it right and the problem is solved.... Then back to plowing...

It's always been my guess that because of the crime in the hood, by walking in the middle of the the street they are less likely to be bumrushed from a gangway. More room to keep distance from danger. It's like driving down the middle of a country road, which allows you more room for choices if a deer bolts out of the fields onto the road.

Good analysis. There follows sitting down in the middle of the street, in the aisles of stores, on stairways so people can't get by, running the wrong way on escalators shoving people aside, etc.
There is a powerful drive to be -- somewhere else. Not that they have anything to do there -- they could shout and break bottles just as well on their own corner -- but just to go somewhere else because they physically can do so. This seems to operate independently of the easier availability of potential crime victims in some areas.
Yup -- all the elaborate traffic lights and push-the-button-for-walk-signal devices, with timers displaying the remaining number of seconds left to cross, and they go wandering diagonally across four lanes just anywhere, often walking backwards and laughing with each other as they strip out a McD's order and produce a blizzard of unwanted napkins, ketchup packets, etc. Can't hit us or you be in trouble.
An ordered, rectilinear world generally not of one's own making, in which many cannot assign names to common everyday objects. Do as you will, take what you want, and damage, ignore, and leave the rest -- often making the area undesirable/unusable by your very presence.
Able to operate a sophisticated smartphone while seemingly unable to come to grips with the two simple white lines of a crosswalk. It's fascinating.
I stand well back on the corner, with a fire hydrant, light pole, heavy traffic-signal box, anything I can put between me and the turning traffic that sometimes comes over the curb -- and just watch.
(Look out for the lethal dualies on the rear of semi-trailers. That curb didn't get smashed by itself. They keep welding extra length onto freight containers -- 55 feet now? -- to the point I think the city will have to enact a length limit for safety.)
