More Cameras Coming

  • The Chicago Police Department expects to receive a shipment of more than 450 body cameras, which will be worn by officers in some of the most gang-plagued areas of the city in addition to the department's top brass starting this spring, city officials announced Sunday.

After being trained, officers and supervisors in seven of the department's 22 police districts will be equipped with body cameras capable of recording 72 continuous hours of high-definition video and audio on a single charge.

The new cameras, part of a city pilot program, began in January 2015 in the Shakespeare District, which covers the Logan Square and West Town communities on the North and Northwest sides. The six new police districts, which encompass one-third of the city, cover the South Shore, Auburn Gresham, Chatham, Washington Park, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Back of the Yards, Brighton Park, Bridgeport, Austin, North Lawndale and Little Village communities.
Those seem like predominantly ....ah, nevermind. It'd be silly to point that out.

People want accountability - get ready for the "Age of Zero Discretion" and being accountable for your own actions.

This article made us smile though:
  • Chicago’s top cop plans to start wearing a body camera Monday as part of a 15-month pilot program that has so far produced substantially fewer videos per officer than in several other big cities.

Interim Police Supt. Eddie Johnson has pledged to wear a body camera, along with his command staff, to “demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding trust with the residents we’re sworn to serve.”
Maybe he can wear it to the weekly Rahm briefing. Or the Secret Study Group.

Omg, and they thought police have up before... put a body cam on and who's going to do anything? Things can be misconstrued and you have non police reviewing this stuff making determinations on ur actions that can get u fired, sued, or worse sent to prison. I didn't think it could get much worse, but every move they make they prove me wrong.

Beat officers? Check.
Beat sergeants? Check.
Field lieutenant? Check.
Superintendent? Yeah sure, check.
Tactical teams? Che...yeah, let's hold off on those.

Don't let anyone pressure (sucker) you into doing something in the name of productivity (numbers) that you'll regret. Respond to your jobs, write paper when needed but be very sure before you do anything that is self initiated, and watch what you say too, even before the lights go on.

It's time to be the police that the vocal people think they want. Example: "Hello sir/ma'am, what happened? Do you know who did this? Do you need an ambulance? This is your report number right here."

I don't think that you really have a grasp on the thought process of the liberal progressive, anti-police crowd ( pardon me I repeat myself) out there. From conversations that I have had with them, many of them are defense attorneys, they believe that crime is caused by " youthful indiscretion" and that there really are no " bad guys" in the black community. The real problem is " over-policing" which causes too many unnecessary arrests and makes felons out of black youth. They don't believe in long prison sentences for murder or for shooting someone. Yes, they honestly believe that. And, I had one person recently tell me that the reduction in street stops is a good thing and any increase in crime has been caused by Gov. Rauner reducing money for social programs. So, now you know what they think of you and what you do every day out there. Be careful and protect yourself. They are not on your side.

Well said last time I checked we all get paid EXACTLY the same. Dope arrests all get tossed in Court so that's just a waste of time sitting in the Station processing a drug arrest. As far as car chases the vast majority of these chases are over a hot car, not worth it to chase especially if the bad guy blows through two lights, you wouldn't be very smart to continue chasing over that hot car just so you can go to your local bar and have a new story for the guys or go the gym with a new story over a fucken hot car because lets be honest here nobody cares about your stories, guys just pretend to care and listen to your story so you can listen to their story, its your ass if the bad guy or you hit a Civilian over this nonsense. Just be smart out there guys there is no quota just stay fetal and continue working VRI for a few hundred dollars a night.

These cameras can serve a useful purpose. If we could note when we have a particularly ghetto-fabulous interaction with the public, we could then FOIA the video. Perhaps an enterprising tech-savvy individual could post these to a website or to YOUTUBE and make some money. It would also serve the purpose of showing the unknowing public the crap we see and have to deal with on a daily basis. Maybe garner a little support.

At the least it would provide laughs for people.

But he will not do any contact card and he will not be wearing that bright yellow taser. It is so great to decide what you want to wear.

“demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding trust with the residents we’re sworn to serve.”

When you introduce audio/video recording into what is a police-hating, "no snitchin'" environment in the first place, how much more "trust" are you going to get?

Of course, some people are permanently out of their heads, and will yell out or do absolutely anything, even in front of existing fixed cameras. Hell, some even record and publicly post their own crimes. It's a mixed bag.

I do feel that it will discourage casual conversation with normals, however. You may end up getting less information about things going on, not more. Makes people nervous.

Rahm says police should "embrace" these gadgets and "make them part of their culture." Standard gibble-gabble.

This new government by cameraphone/Facebook/Internet is changing our society in many ways -- not all of them good. A guy in California just got a symbolic $60 million fine and a very real 20 years in prison for deliberately starting the huge "King Forest Fire" in 2014 which destroyed 12 homes and about 100 other structures, burned 100,000 acres of forest, injured firefighters, and took a whole month to bring under control. How much did all those water-dropping flights and everything else cost us?

Crazy a__hole did it just so he could take "selfies" of his "heroism" -- narrating "I'm in danger, babe, danger with flames on all sides of me."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3532073/Man-deliberately-started-California-wildfire-destroyed-12-homes-100-000-acres-forest-SELFIE.html

The politicians have officially taken the joy and fulfillment one gets from helping someone, or catching a bad guy, away. Hopefully something worth while comes along. If not, I'll stick it out for the twenty, and I'll never look back. This job is not worth it anymore. For trying to do good, you could lose your family, freedom, pension, or life. People say "you get paid so good". $80 grand isn't so good, especially in the city. It's good, but nowhere near what we should be getting. Plus, you have to have college to get on the job. $80 grand is not out of reach by any means, if you have a college education and experience.

Let them see these clowns fighting to go through their buddy's pockets as he lays dead after being shot, Or how they ignore multiple commands to disperse at a crime scene or to clear a path for an ambulance, or the best is when their young child is unresponsive and heading into the great beyond as cfd fights to save the kids life and mom and dad are on the couch watching tv without a care, as if it was just the plumber on a service call. So the city is saying that they MAY get up to 450
cameras by Spring time. Well it is Spring time
folks. Who is producing these cameras that they
can not produce them in any mass quantities?
How about taking a few of the ones in service
now and start training officers in their use, so
when they do become available, they can be
put to use.
That being said, it appears that the city does not
want to implement body cameras for the obvious
reason that they will document the pink

not want anyone to know exists.

At this point, cameras are still optional for police departments. HOWEVER, if they ask for and get the State grant money (from the state with no budget) then they have to use them and follow state law on how they're used. No state money, no state rules. It's all in PA 99-352, the same act that gave you the pedestrian stop system....Seventy six pages of light reading.

If that's what they want oh well, then the rules need to change that there should be a 20 to 30 second time chance to give offenders whom are fighting each other a chance to stop fighting before police can take action, without police jumping in, only if unarmed, and an anything else, police should back off contain the area and make it an automatic HBT situation to avoid officers getting hurt or killed, and to avoid them from legal liabilities...

4/11/2016 06:47:00 AM

Why do you dumbasses keep posting this shit whenever in-car or body cameras come up? You still have discretion. Nothing says you have to give everyone a ticket. What is it about a camera that makes you think you lose your discretion for the everyday traffic stop? If you don't understand this, please don't even bother doing traffic stops. You're clearly going to get yourself and others in trouble, since you lack the ability to understand even the simplest of concepts.

The union keeps saying its a good thing. It's for our protection! Just a thought. When was the last time anyone at FOP worked a beat car? Not in a area, not the range not teaching but a blue and white. Why are they representing patrol? Maybe FOP should wear a camera too.

Just watch. Someone's not going to have enough time to turn on a camera when they get into a shooting in an ass puckering event and the community will call for his or her head on a pike for not turning their body camera on when it was not feasible or forgot because someone just pulled a gun on them. Then what? Are they going to be terminated because they forgot to turn the camera on?

4/11/2016 01:49:00 PM

Think about it this way....

If you step out of the squad, or are in route to any Officer Assit call, just turn the darn thing on then. That ways it is on before shot hits the fan and your ass is covered.

Get into the habit of turning it on for the pedantic shit and it will become automatic.

Since the Taxpayers paid for all those cameras and related equipment, and it is Public Property, and since I pay for a part of it, I demand that all body Camera CPD Videos be made public, and available for viewing online. I also demand that the Mayor, All Aldermen, all Politicians doing business with the city of Chicago, all Chicago Public School Teachers, all Chicago Firemen, and all Streets and San Workers, and any and all other City Employees wear body cams while on duty. I am entitled to this as a Taxpayer of the City of Chicago

4/11/2016 07:29:00 AM

SCC, you're tech-savvy guys. This is a tremendous opportunity for you. Bet you could even charge money for subscriptions. Terrific way to gather evidence about the real effects of liberal policies that pump money into the ghetto, too.

Nope. Cameras have to have a 30 second 'before incident' buffer - so, just like the in car cameras, they are ALWAYS recording. They'll just take your camera and upload the whole thing, just like they do when they take the hard drives from the cars.

The ACLU/#bl(a)m "Accountability For da Po-leece (ONLY)"
body cameras will be just in time for the 2016 Summer Shit-Show.

You m/fers think The Police are sitting on their
hands in self-defense, now?

Wait until July rolls around...

"Make da Po-leece DO SUMP'N!
Dey witholdin' all dey Po-leece
service from US!"

Or...

"Dey just aimin' dey cameras
at us an' not doin' dey job!
That ain't how it was s'posed
to go!"

Have no dialog with these shitbirds.

Just keep reminding them:
"This entire interaction is being recorded."

You know...
Kind of like how they shriek and howl
triumphantly while waving their camera phones
around like a magical talisman given them by
the local conjure man.

"Keeps Po-leece off ya!"

(Baron Samedi & Mistuh Tee-Hee say
"Hey," y'all!)

"Uh-huh! Puttin' all y'all ass up on
Yoo-Toob and gettin' y'all ass fired!"

LOL!
Everybody's got a camera and Policing
has been intentionally dragged to a stand still
in Chicago.

Bullshit and Fuckery crashing at an intersection
because m/fers thought it would be entertaining
if they cocked the traffic signals like those
assholes out of the 340 Building used to do.

Hopefully, these ignorant fucks at aclu/#bl(a)m
are going to be sorely disappointed that there will be
very few if any Policemen wadded up in the wreckage.

There shouldn't be any but you can bet there WILL
be some joyful hard heads still out there willing to
take a lick just to say the rest of everybody else is
a "dog" for re-orienting their priorities in the face
of being viewed as the enemy of the public.

Police like you have no friends...

Just sit back and be amused all summer long
as the smart people realize that they have no
answers other than beating on The Police because
they're the ONLY ones in the mix bound by law,
rules, regulations and conditions of employment.

The rest of everybody else prowls the streets of this city
with an assertive, in-your-face, confident, long-legged, swing-dick swagger
that says: "This is OUR M/Fing town!"

Let a Policeman not humbly genuflect upon the tops of
his shoes before his so called social betters.

You know, shit purposely turned upside-down and ass-backwards
just to separate The Police from the public good will for an agenda.

Well...
For all intent and purposes, they're correct.
This IS their town now.

Now watch.
The "Silent Majority" will soon start screaming
about how The Police "betrayed" them.

Thank Rahm and the aclu/#bl(a)m mob for that.

Work the job.
Retire.
Get a pension.
Escape.

Being a "stakeholder" means you
got chumped into holding a stinking
bag of shit that USED TO BE your
hard earned interest in the fate of this city.

Release the j-Fled commissioned Morale Survey now...

Everybody could use the laugh.

Right?

Or will that fuck up the artfully crafted
Police-Hater spin?

Evening musings and a cup o'
bust-head (strong coffee)
with a splash of Knob Creek 120 in it.

Yes FETAL, ducking and dodging questions from the members, avoiding contact with the members, doing as little as possible but still collecting a check with no aggressive actions against the police hating politicians or media. Their lack of advocacy, has direct correlation of productivity to be efficient and effective combating the false narrative that the police are a MOB like organization. If they speak up or hold the mirror low enough for the snakes to see the fork of their tongue they might lose the sweet gig that comes with keeping their mouth shut.

Plus, you have to have college to get on the job. $80 grand is not out of reach by any means, if you have a college education and experience.

4/11/2016 08:13:00 AM

Leaving out, just for a minute all the dept bullshit, cameras clout and whatever, you may not find that 80G so easy to replace. Where did you earn that degree? In what? Liberal arts? Communication? Business Administration? Minor in what? Sports medicine? Theater? Phys ed? If so, head on down to Starbucks, Best Buy and Target and talk to your fellow graduates while they ring up your purchases.

Maybe you have an education degree. Good for you. Try to get a job in the chicago area. CPS might hire you to teach at a grammar school in Altgeld Gardens, Englewood or in Austin. For 45g a year. There are plenty, and I mean PLENTY of ten year out of college grads who are not making 80g, and most of the ones working aren't in a job where doing the absolute minimum is tolerated like it is on the job. And dont tell me I'm full of shit, I retired with 28 years.

You may suddenly find yourself (if you are lucky) in a 50k job where you are held to a standard of performance to which many people are not accustomed. You may be able to put all series on the check off sheet, but in the real world if you spend hours, days and weeks doing nothing, they show you the door. As a retiree, I have sympathy for your frustration. But take a hard look at that resume' before you submi it. It may not be worth as much as you think.

Good luck, and stay safe.

You got to him before I did. He is clueless. 80 grand is not out of reach with college or experience!?!?! He sounds like me years ago. I was in grad school and had an internship. One of my classmates had a full-time job, same agency, and was in school part-time. I told her I would have no problem making 60k coming right out of school and that it just wasn't that hard. She laughed right away and wouldn't even argue. She just said okay. Three full-time jobs later and probably around 8 years later I finally hit 60k...as the police. I am probably making more money as the police than half if not more of my employed grad school classmates that stayed "in the profession" and I was in a top ten ranked program. Don't believe the hype.

Why would FOP assist with this? It's a matter to be handled in her in her personal life? This was an incident among "friends". She invited the guy over to her apartment for dinner and they got liquored-up. I do not defend anything he said, or did, or is accused of doing, nor do I blame her for pressing the issue criminally if in fact she believed he inappropriately touched her child. Remember folks, they were all covered up with blankets and the alleged witness was another child. But, as for your notion of a civil suit; for what? Was he in his official capacity? No. Was the City or the Department responsible for his actions? No. Why would FOP, or any union assist her? This is a personal matter among friends/acquaintances. You want to hold a 10-1 benefit for her too? Just leave it alone, it's no one's business and there is no assistance of any kind needed. They both need counseling; alcohol and psychological.

FYI, the Freedom of Information Act does not require the requester to identify him or herself or provide a physical address. Set up an email address, conceal your IP address with a VPN (or whatever is required) and FOIA to your heart's content. You can do what ever you want with the records received. So to those who propose that a Youtube channel of CPD video footage be created, it is perfectly feasible and absolutely legal.

Any comments on the pedophile cop who molested another cop's 9 year old daughter? Will the FOP assist her at all with the civil suit?

You're talking about one case involving a cop. There are hundreds and hundreds of cases of teachers and faculty in our schools raping and sexually abusing their students who are minors, and getting caught with child porn. When a teacher gets charged the media puts these stories on page 9 for one day then they disappear. It happens regularly. And the states attorneys office only brings forth charges on somebody when they know they will get a conviction(e.g. DNA evidence). Think about the other cases that happen where no charges are filed due to lack of sufficient evidence. There are pedophiles in our schools raping and abusing students and the media is silent about it but when one cop does it it gets full blown media attention. They don't want to make educators look bad but they make cops look evil. Putting a stigma on cops is what the media specializes in. But other professions get a pass. They show you one story and bury hundreds of other stories. Classic pulling the wool over peoples eyes. If americans weren't so naive and were capable of critical thinking this wouldn't be happening.
