Twelve Hours

So notices went out for the Detective Exam coming up this May, the first Detective exam in something like a decade or more. Shortshanks and Rahm let the D-unit decline to numbers unseen in modern history, covered by closing two Detective Areas, but obvious as the clearance rate for homicides and other violent crime is hovering at or below 25%.

The notice says to prepare to be at the testing site for twelve hours since they're giving part one and part two at the same time.

So if you're working first watch, you might as well be doing a 20 hour day. Same thing for third watch. The city cannot deny you the time to take the actual test, but this time, the Department will not deviate from the 15% elective time-off provision.

So if it's a warm Saturday in May.....

Anyone seen the order on this yet? It's a completely foreseen event. Weren't things simpler when they gave the test in two shifts?

Why something so damned punitive
and potentially harmful like this?

Twelve hours...

Will you get your test papers back
at least?

Will you have your score when you leave the testing site?

If no to either one, this is a bullshit move.

This is to weed out those not connected. The connected will have no problem getting off.

So how many triple secret study groups are there and when will the law suits start?

They were simpler in the early 1980's. You walked out of the classroom with your answer sheet. They put the score sheet over the top of your answer sheet, marked it and gave you your score right there. There was still room for the usual bullshit but you had your score when you left the building.

Once again the department can turn a gold egg into a turd. Everything they touch turns to shit. There's no reason or excuse for people to have to be at a testing site for 12 hours. If it was planned properly, staffed properly, and run properly, it could be accomplished in half the time I'm sure. That's an impossible task though for an agency that can't even keep it's detective division staffed and functioning properly for the past twelve years. I can't wait to retire and get the hell out of this place.

I say class action against the city--everyone taking this exam should take part in the class action and file an EEOC complaint. Also, file a grievance if denied time off before or after the exam If you work 1st - 3rd Watch. Easy win for the test taker.

Regarding testing: When I was taking an Anatomy and Physiology class our instructor had what I thought was a great system of testing. The test was ScanTron and it was 120 questions. He took the top 10 answers that were right (too easy) and the top 10 answers that were answered wrong (too hard) and threw out. The test was now 100 questions and that was that. Didn't matter if your uncle was a commander, if you were black, Latino, you had some gender-identity issues going on or dyed your purple with KKK tattoos. You had your results the NEXT DAY with a breakdown of it all. Nobody ever complained about the test being racist or a testing process that was unfair and didn't represent the classroom. No minorities complained if they failed as they all thought the process was very fair.

How can the CPD still not figure it out? Almost a year to grade an exam? They really need to have a fair testing system already. Sure have your 20% Merit or whatever but the testing process needs to be held by an outside agency and any testing committee needs to make it their job to NOT bring the material home. Have a study group with all attending over several weeks and NO CELLPHONES allowed to take photos of the tests/materials.

All the girlfriends at HQ will have the whole week off before the Detective exam.

But you regular pushing a beat car blue shirts will have to actually tell the boss you aint coming in!
It is call an unexcused day and you will not be paid. But you will be nice and rested for the rigged test that will ask what color ink is on a search warrant and how long can you cuff a delinquent.

Remember that caught multiple goofs cheating last promotion and nothing happened.
And heaven forbid you have a cell phone or a fancy Iwatch.

The suburbs dont't test for detective. The sharpest PO's are selected and trained by experienced detectives. I guess it wouldn't work here for way to many reasons to list.

Crazies running the asylum! I have officially become embarrassed to say I am a "Chicago" cop! I love my profession and love what I do, but the brass in this department have completely castrated our ability to be effective on the street. This coming bloody summer will be Rahm and the brass' hands. I hope everyone can stay safe.....Remember this department no longer has your backs!

FOP where are you?

This is unprecedented.
This is an unfair labor practice.
This is too much stress.

Someone has to work 1st watch,
then spend 12 hours at a test, 9am-9pm,
then go to work 1st watch!?!?
You expect these POs to fuction that
second night, not make mistakes?

Third watch has it almost as bad.

This is poor planning by exempts who never
worked first or third watch.

FOP file a grievance, get an injunction, STOP THIS!

All the applicants should welcome the twelve hours spent testing because once you hit the D unit that's a quarter of the time you're going to be on scene and typing shit up! Nice OT but not so if you have a family with normal needs. Good Luck my friends and keep your eyes straight ahead on your paper!

12 hours would be a total allotted test time frame.
What would bite is the above average tester will complete Part 1 in about 1 - 1 1/2 hrs.
Then sit around in a hot classroom for 3-4 hrs waiting for slow pokes.
Hope they figured that out.
Then at the start of Part 2...the gifted Clout Babies will finish in 15 mins. or just walk out.
If this is your first promo exam, this happens all the time.
Do you ever think the Dept. would require a Passing score on BOTH portions of the D-exam?
For the record, the gifted get to go A-North.
Afterwards, try and get FOP to post the List (ha-ha).
Here's a thought;
Wouldn't it be nice if the Merits would have to re-take every new test, just to make it seem a tad bit fair.

This Detective test will be a joke!

Can someone please explain how A MERIT detective (DP) in area central on days with not a lot of time or experience in the D-unit was the expert who helped design the test? Wait, he's up the LTs ass and has told the Lt. All the examples. Looks like another "cooked" test. I feel bad for the people who will not make it because a certain group will have an advantage.

Remember, the expert the department supplied was a merit hack!

Saw a comment regarding caps. Unfortunately I had the experience of dealing with the 14th district caps office about 6 or 8 or 9 years ago regarding a property I owned in the district . It had to do about trespassers on my property. I mentioned how I enjoyed doing ejections in my district when I was at work , but i wasn't at work and this wasn't my district. The 21 or 22 year old caps cop asked me , no shit , what was an ejection? When I told him , he had a look on his face like I told him I bbq babies and eat them with hot sauce and beer. I wish I wasn't telling the truth but that is caps. I'm glad I'm done with this shit.

This is gotta be the same hand job who, after the sgt test results came out, he told everyone he scored good and would rank under 300 for sure. When the results were sent out he shut his mouth because his score was shit and he ranked over 2000.

Sure it was rigged......whatever helps him sleep at night.
