Fulfilling a Wish

  • Six-year-old Madison Pruitt, who has cancer, wanted to become a cop.

So on Wednesday afternoon, interim Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson walked two blocks from the Gresham District police station to Madison’s home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood to make her dream come true.

Marching behind Johnson were about 75 cops, including two on horseback.

“I heard your lifelong dream was to be a Chicago Police officer,” Johnson told the little girl, who was bundled up and sitting in a wheelchair as the two met on the front porch of her home where she is receiving hospice care.

“So today I’m going to make it official, and make you a lifelong Chicago Police officer, congratulations,” he said, placing a Chicago police cap on her head. The brim promptly sank down over her face.

In a voice not more than a squeak, Madison said she wanted to be a police officer “because you get to protect people.”
Sometimes it's even more than that Madison, but your sentiments reflect why many of us joined in the first place. We don't do it to get rich or shoot bad guys or being portrayed as monsters day in and day out. We join out of a sense of helping, tradition, protecting and serving, even in the face of adversity. Lord knows there's plenty of that

Keep fighting - you have the heart of a cop in you already.

It's a shame the good die and the assholes seem to live long enough to ruin lives of countless others.

God Bless Madison.

To not only protect, but to heal and help. This is the extra that keeps me going. In the midst of all the negativity and hate, there is this glimmer of hope. A beautiful little girl wants to be like us. I don't consider myself special, we are just police. But, someone else we are so much more. It's nice to be reminded of that.

I am retired after almost 40 years on this job and I always enjoyed helping out people who truly needed help. I never took your race or religion as a reason to help somebody. The chicago police as a group are a bunch of people with big hearts. I really think most people think good of us. It is the non law a bidding people who want others to think poorly of us. GREAT job Eddie Johnson and Erie Spradly.

Many people will write this off as a pr stunt!! What they fail to see is P.O's buying shoes, clothes & food for kids!! Holding a kid or just the hand of a kid trying to provide comfort for a child in a bad situation. I'm glad this child was given a smile if just for a moment!! For all the people who hate us, kids like this make it worth the hate. GOD BLESS you little one, when you get to heaven just look down & smile

Guess any media sound bite is better then none.

Best turn out I have seen in 30 years.
Bless this strong little girl.

BUT hard to swallow the command staff showing up.
Sorry but staged events are just pitifully.

Did not enjoy Weiss, McCarthy and now Jackson or Escalante showing up
to take interviews when this story is about the little girl.

sorry but that's the facts
show up do your duty and leave.
soundbites are for pandering bosses

Every time some a-hole says "f--- the police" (like that radical activist that was part of the teachers union rally last week) they should provide this article and the brief commentary you appended. Literally, police officers would not have a job if the scum of the earth did not exist. It's because crime exists, bad people exist, those who wish to harm others exist that they have jobs. And yet they still take those jobs. I'm not an officer but whenever I see a cop responding, whether for something large or small, I do give thanks for their service, because they've chosen to do a dangerous job most of us wouldn't be up to doing ourselves.

OT... Remember to do those ISR's boys and girls, or Lt. EW and MM will toss you off your car in 007 and split you and your partner up. Hit those softballs. ISR all those pissbums, that's how we reduce crime!

Remember all those merit hacks need you to do those ISR's so they can wear even more brass!

TOO BAD the "lamestream" cop hating media dosen't show this story nationally.

They hate cops until they need the police to get them out of a jam.

Screw the media, and this is coming from a liberal citizen, who respects the police, "back the blue".
