- A 17-year-old boy shot to death in the Union Ridge neighborhood Monday afternoon, after two others were wounded in shootings Monday morning in Chicago.
The boy was found behind a Taco Burrito King across from the CTA Blue Line stop in the 5500 block of North Harlem Avenue, according to police. He was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead there, according to police.
Police said the boy was shot during a drug deal and that his car and phone are both missing.
Chicago Police Capt. Hootan Bahmandeji said a witness reported seeing the boy being dumped from a car in the area of Harlem Avenue and Higgins Road. The man was located in a parking lot next to a dental clinic and a Taco Burrito King restaurant.
So first, why wasn't this Rhodes scholar in school? Second, is this going to be bad publicity for the Taco Burrito King people? Third, can it be that the traveling ne'er-do-wells are migrating to where the police aren't?

TBK has had a few problems at night, caused by the usual suspects coming out of the bars. Surprised that this occurred in broad daylight around the location. There are usually people around in that lot: peeps from Ernie's Bar out taking a smoke break or people coming into TBK.

Union Ridge is generally considered to be the area from the Kennedy Xpressway south to Lawrence and Harlem east to about Narragansett. Nothing new, not a hippster description. When I was looking at homes in the area about 15-20 years ago it was called Union Ridge.

My son goes to Taft buddy- straight A student btw. Taft is still a good high school.
The Northwest Side and the 16th district is slowly changing. About 20 to 15 years ago slowly the south east end of 016 (Belmont to Irving Park and Cicero to Austin) started becoming gang infested. Now it is fully gang infested and slowly they are creeping up north.

WRONG. My kid goes to Taft which is a neighborhood school. My kid is not a thug and most kids that go there now are decent kids. He was a dropout and went to an alternative school. Get your facts straight before you post something. Now go back to Mom's basement and carry on.

I live in 1712 and drive on elston cicero foster lawrence daily - never see any police cars unless I go down pulaski by the station- pay $4800 a year property taxes while ghetto dwellers pay nothing and when I drive thru their neighborhoods to go to the south side to univ of chicago for their organ concerts, police are everywhere. One security for the board of ed. for the past 15yrs. and the other 3rd watch for cpd for the past 18yrs. With that said, I don't have the cash to send my boys to private schools with the mortgage, property tax and incidentals of everyday life a family entails. My kids went to wildwood a good public school and TAFT HS is the local feeder school that has some decent programs. Don't kid yourself mr. commentator about the crap happening at st. pats, notre dame, loyola academy or northside college prep. The same shit happens to people with money in better neighborhoods on the northshore, park ridge, niles and skokie. Why not blame the parents that fostered the idiot into the world without supervision that enabled him to make poor choices like he did. That shit didn't happen overnight you know. Union Ridge is a section of Norwood Park. Union Ridge cemetery is on Higgins about 1/4 mile east of Harlem.

First off he had dropped out of Taft and was getting his diploma on line. Had some issues obviously, don't know about his home life but probable disfunction was present. As for the neighborhood being called Union ridge, that's the name of the cemetery at Talcott and Higgins. However since ive lived here over 40 hrs that area of TBK has never been referred to as Union ridge. It has been called Harlem Higgins, Norwood Park, but I've never known it to be Union Ridge but I could be mistaken. Furthermore TBK is nothing but trouble, it does nothing to positively impact the neighborhood or improve daily life there.

A few things here:
1. Someone involved in the shooting seems to have bought a keg from the Har Hig Bar next to the TBK. The bar is a mainstay for many Taft teachers, parents, and alums.

2. Taft got a new principal last year who's slowly changing things. But, his major problem is a lifeless staff with many being lazy for years. In fact, Taft had a 65% graduation as recently as 2012, the student growth is below average, a major tardy and truancy problem, is overcrowded due to taking students from outside their boundaries for their Jr. ROTC (Navy) program,and the Taft student don't feel safe at their own school.

3. Also, Taft has been having problems controlling teen drinking and drug usage with students having Vodka Fridays (where they put vodeka in their water bottles) and another student had to be taken to the hospital some time ago after getting sick eating Marijuana brownies in the Taft lunchroom.

union ridge is named after the cemetery there,but nobody really calls it that.i live in Gladstone park and nobody really calls it that either.as far as taft....it seems to be getting much better with the new principal,a female student there,indian girl,recently earned/won a full ride scholarship to yale university,which was a first ever for taft.the rowdieness problem with TBK is the drunks from teasers going in there late at night.i myself just go to the niles TBK on touhy late at night.

Taft Special Ed. teacher (Marilyn Falkenberg) who was quoted on the story is part of white, Girls club which runs Taft. Most of these women make $84K+, don't want to work in the ghetto, use all their pull to get to Taft, and aren't want you would call 'worker bees', most just go through the motions with showing up to work a big accomplishment to them.
Taft's Special ed. department is filled with women, specifically white women. There's THRITY, YES 30!!, Special Ed teachers at Taft (Taft!) with 25 of them being women and 80% of them having their Masters' degrees, which means more money to help(?) students with learning and behavioral problems. Shouldn't these women be at south and west side schools to really help CPS students for the salaries they make? Don't kid yourself, these women know what they're doing.
Taft's not a bad school, it's a nice safe place for a white woman who live on the Far NW side of Chicago or suburbs to work. Taft is basically a suburban CPS schools with less than 4% Black kids, many act more white than the white kids.
That place is a fuvking dump it should be closed down

I agree its a sad situation for a 17 yr old to lose his life, but either you dont know, or decided to ignore the fact that he has been a problem for some time. His parents along with family members have known about him . His friends knew him as the go to guy for party goods. Many people tried to help this kid but he refused the law abiding path, therefore he infected many many lives with his ways and not to mention affected many families dealing with the aftermath of your child doing drugs. Nobody accused this kid as a dope addict as you claim, but a dope dealer. And that type of scum is the exact type of people we need to rid society of to protect our children. I've played the dope game for many years, and theres one thing guaranteed, sooner or later you get caught up, either by the Police or by the street. Bottom line is that he is one less jagoff we have to deal and possibly stopped a few overdoses as well. Yes its sad, but TRUE.
That whole Northwest side which used to be an ideal place to live is turning into a complete SHITHOLE.
