How Much is the Hospital Paying?

  • Beleaguered Chicago taxpayers will spend $4.9 million to compensate the family of a 38-year-old man who suffered a mental breakdown in 2012 and was dragged from his cell by Chicago Police officers after being shocked repeatedly with a stun gun, aldermen were told Monday.
So now we assume the lockups will just leave the resisters in their cells and slowly starve them into submission in hopes of avoiding having to actually, you know, remove someone bodily from a small concrete and steel box.

Maybe we can provide linen and towel service for them, too. Before the hospitals kill them.

The hospital has lawyers that fight for the Hospital Interests. Who does the CPD have?

If the police didn't arrest people there would be no need for payouts. Just let the city go to hell. The thugs will slowly die off from CCW holders shooting them, saving the city, county and state from medical care and incarceration.

Just because he gor dragged a few yards for being a loser?!?

Pretty close to it at Cook County Jail. They are promising pizza parties and contact visits for the inmates if they promise to be good (i.e. no masturbating or throwing piss and shit on each other or officers.).

We don't have an anti hospital society we have an anti police society.
The police are the problem and they must therefore pay.
We, as a city and society, are so fucked.

While I do agree that the 4.9 million is far too much to pay the family of the deceased, who did NOT expire as a result of his
contact with police, the video of the tactics used to remove him from the cell were horrifying to a public who isn't used to dealing with the unpleasant side of police work. Added to that, the multiple tasings which hospital personnel attested to (as well as the taser devices themselves), and you can see why the figure in the settlement is so astronomical.

Better tactics, and a reminder to all that it's not so much what we do, it's how it is perceived by the public when it's caught/captured on video, will only serve our profession better with that mindset.

I hope the CCW holders are better shots than the gang bangers are. Too many wounded that cost a lot to provide medical care to.

How the hell do they come up with these million dollar payouts for criminal mutts that would never make more than $50,000 in their entire life? What a joke.

Andy and Barney never treated Otis that way. They had Aunt Bea bring him clean blankets and warm apple pies. Otis had a sickness and never got the shit tazed out of him.
I know Ald. Beale was afraid a jury would be shown a couple of reruns from MEtv and it would make LaQuan's settlement look like Uber fare to 26th and Cal.

If the parents thought he was 'mentally ill', why didn't they call for the paramedics? Do they call the CPD if someone is bleeding in a car accident, or in that situation do they call for medical help?

The police should be called for crimes and possibly ordinance violations. Maybe the police should be sent only if the caller agrees to sign a complaint against the person they are calling about. If the caller doesn't think it is a crime, just a mental breakdown, call an ambulance, and the ambulance can ask for police assistance if necessary.

Having a non compliant family member that commits crimes and resists lawful orders seems to be a surefire way of getting rich.

Anybody watch 60 Minutes last Sunday? They did a story on German prisons. Called it 5 Star Slammer. Things will change when more muzzies are thrown in there.

"Three years ago, the City Council authorized a $22.5 million settlement to Christina Eilman, a mentally ill California woman who was arrested at Midway Airport in 2006, then released in a high crime neighborhood, where she was sexually assaulted before falling or being pushed from a CHA high-rise."

Hate to say it, but this particular payout was justified. Hard to believe that not one copper working the 2nd District realized that releasing this young, mentally disturbed white girl onto the neighborhood streets was a tragedy waiting to happen. Even after her family made numerous calls begging to hold her until they arrived from California. Sounds like too many officers have the "no fucks given" attitude and have lost their common sense and decency. Sad.

Let me understand, thug "dies not follow laws" refuses lawful police order, fights police properly taken to hospital, hospital gives him overdose he dies and the city throws millions more in tax money "It's not like they spend their money" at it, now this opens coppers up for more media anti-police rants!

Where was "fair and balanced" media at for police rally in the 23rd ward on beat 811 Saturday? The could not cover the hundreds of taxpaying innocent citizens that support police but yet 8 thugs protest by FOP hall and all of them were there, broadcasting even national news! Will the taxpaying lemmings wise up? Nope like the other posts where people are fleeing this corrupt city-county-state in droves and they take money and jobs with them! Look at the crime in Lincoln park area lady in her own garage daylight robbed by thug, until the people stand up and tell the elected "no more" it will be an extremely bloody summer stay safe stay fetal your job-freedom-pension-savings depend on it! Think you do your job, thug scum lawyer decides a pro-Bono (Thug pays nothing) case and next thing you know your crying to your kids and wife after the government media complex crashes down on you!

The big winner is the law firm who will collect nearly 1.5 million in fees. Funded by Joe Biden's so called "sacrifice" or taxation on those 9 to 5ers who bust their ass each and everyday.

Lets turn this around. Lets say that this piece of shit runs over a child while drunk. Do you think the same attorney would represent the family of the child and collect millions from the now deceased piece of shit. Absolutely not. There is no chance of a payout and we know attorneys in their hearts stand up for justice. Attorney do not work for free.

Now add to the scenario the dead piece of shit was being chased by the police when he runs over the child. Now the attorney in the goodness of his heart and seeking justice for the family, would represent the family of the dead child. Money talks and is the mothers milk of the law profession. Now go to work and make sure you pay your taxes by the 15th. So many on assistance are counting on you.

Mama got the hurt put on her. I'm sure she will be the first in line to what rightfully needs to be redistributed to her. She will be out and about in her new Lexus driving to and from to the gambling boats sipping top shelf and sporting boulder sized diamond bling bling. And for those accountants out there, will this fool be listed as an asset or a lifelong liability to society?

Another uninformed/misinformed opinion splashed across this blog. Let me educate you:

Just like the mentally ill riding the trains all night or living in cardboard boxes, the police cannot tell them where to go or how to live their mentally ill lives. The progressive intellectuals have decided for all of us that they can live the lives their imperfect brains tell them to.

Had any officer interfered with her Constitutionally guaranteed right to walk out the front door of that station they would have been hammered with the laws on the books. The allegations of her mental state was based solely on a phone conversation with people that may or may not have been her relatives, impossible for officers to verify.

Now, you can say that the officers should have taken a chance and tried to intervene, and most of us have at one time or another. But I will never second guess some copper doing thing within the parameters that we have been given. Risk you family's future trying to help someone that their family has failed too? Not in these times, no sir.

The City needs to fight these lawsuits, not give the taxpayers money away like it grows on trees. Fight. If you lose, appeal, then appeal again. Drag it out and make these unscrupulous lawyers work for that money. It really looks like the politicians are working with the thieving lawyers to steal our money.

Don't get me wrong, I feel for the family, but we the taxpayers are not responsible for your kids. You are.

No arrests no lawsuits, simple. Maybe we should taze the s*** out of these guys since the city wants us too. No more hands on OC spray then tazer.

You know what? I kind of like to think that I would have tried to help these parents when their disturbed daughter was in Chicago. I kind of always thought that what the police did. Help people. Also, no one would have been "hammered" and you know it.

You are right, there is nothing that can be done about the homeless camped out in their cardboard boxes.

You are wrong, the fuck up wasn't letting the mentally ill woman walk out of lockup into the Deuce. The fuck up wasn't signing her into the nearest mental facility instead of following through with the disorderly conduct/criminal trespass charge. You sign her into the hospital and if the hospital wants to kick her loose after a few hours, it is on them.

She didn't start to act crazy after signing the I bond slip. Better study up on the concept of "in custody". Like it or not, it's not much different than taking custody of a child.
