Better Late than Never

  • An activist’s declaration at last Friday’s Chicago Teachers Union rally — “f— the police, and everybody f— with ‘em” has drawn the ire of Chicago police and a sound Twitter scolding for union president Karen Lewis.

And now the Fraternal Order of Police is asking Lewis to condemn the insult tossed out at the end of the CTU-organized rally outside the Thompson Center that has upset FOP members and their families — many of which include Chicago Public School teachers. They took to Twitter and to peppering a popular Chicago police blog with angry comments.
Karen knows she's pretty much lost this round against Rahm - public opinion isn't behind the one-day strike, her union is fracturing as more and more teachers see this overreach as a failure, not to mention the disgust by a large percentage of her membership to the types of organizations she's aligned the union with. For this reason, we don't expect any sort of meaningful apology.

There might be something in a few days or weeks after the hubbub has died down. But it'll be insincere - if she meant it, she would have said something the evening after or day after these statements were made on a stage she paid for, at a protest she organized, under the banner she marched beneath.

The foul-mouthed "activist" is most likely associated with the group that turned down the contract Lewis and her second-in-command negotiated months ago. This is like the War of the Roses - everything will go down in flames.

What the CTU doesn't realize is there is a bill called the Edication Equality Bill is sitting committee in Springfield. It's a voucher bill for education. So when this passes and it has the votes since Rham is on board. Good bye CPS. Privatization of public education is coming. The Catholic schools and charter schools are going to benefit greatly.

Forget Karen Lewis!

Why doesn't someone ask the woman who said it to apologize?

She needs to be taught some civility and respect, if not a half a dozen other personal skills.

Also expected is an apology from Capt D.H. to the FOP. Young Capt D.H. is from the cpd baseball team and begged FOP for $3k for baseball jerseys but treated the FOP trustees like they were on his watch. Capt Dave has a lot to learn with all of 15 years on the job.

There's no way Karen (Kimmons) Lewis condemns the "Fuck the Police' rant. If she does, she loses the black teachers' support as they don't want to apologize for anything, including low graduation, dropout, and suspension/expulsion rates. Lewis doesn't worry about her white members, who make up 50%+ of her members, as they're like Canadians. (If you step on a Canadian's toe, they'll say they're sorry to you.)

If Lewis loses the black teachers, she'll lose the majority of her members who blindly follow her and they accounted for most of her audience downtown on April 1st.

Most of Lewis' white members picketed in front of their schools from 6:30am until 9:30am and then they went to breakfast together when they were scheduled to go to Chicago State or NEIU for the 2nd part of their strike protests. The 3rd part of the strike protest on April 1st was a colossal failure with maybe 8000-8500 protestors making their way downtown. This out of 27,000 CTU teachers and another 10,000 support staff.

Let's be clear about Lewis. She's a race baiter and quietly loved every minute of the "FUCK the Police" rant. if you go through her speeches aka rants, you'll find tons of anti-white hate speech, including how black and brown children shouldn't have their futures decided by rich, white people who drive in from the suburbs. Uhhh Karen, open up your eyes as 50% of your members are white and 25%-30% of your members live in the suburbs, IN, and WI on residency waivers and grandfathered-in with the old residency policy.

I agree that the CTU is going down in flames. This fall, when they should have been creating a strong plan for public message and negotiation strategy, they spent their time and our union dues on putting together the nachos, the hot chocolate, and the "social justice" banners for the useless rally in Grant Park (which also included a F-the Police shouter). Thanks, CTU. Now we're all working on our resumes and hoping for a spot in some suburban district willing to take us.

Page May had nothing to do with the contract being turned down. The 40-member CTU bargaining team which turned down the contract was led by Jackson Potter (more on him later). The Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reported friction between Karen Lewis, Jesse Sharkey, Michael Brunson, and the bargaining team. But, that's BULLSHIT!!

The contract offer needed to be taken to the bargaining team for their vote to start the clock on a possible strike in mid-May. Lewis, Sharkey, and Potter knew going in that their members didn't want to fork over their 7% pension pickup CPS has been paying for them since 1981 in addition to COLA, raises (except 1981), and step/lane increases (THINK 7%-9% in raises each year for CPS teachers by combining all four.

The two real sticking points in the contract were: (1) veteran teachers being asked to retire early and be given $1500 for each of service and nothing else as an incentive, and (2) if the city or state failed to fund CPS properly, the contract would be considered null and void.

Teachers were going to get a 13.5% raise over the life of the contract (4 years?), but, were going to lose step/lane increases and the 7% pension pickup (weeded off in two years). In addition, teachers were being asked to contribute more to their health care.

Jackson Potter:

According to its most recent filings with the Internal Revenue Service, the union had $9.8 million in cash on hand at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

Eight CTU employees, including Lewis, were paid more than $100,000 that year.

The union also paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to Robin Potter & Associates, a law firm owned by the mother of Jackson Potter, a Chicago high school teacher turned CTU employee who helped found Lewis’ coalition of supporters — known as CORE, the Caucus of Rank-and-File Educators.

Since Lewis and her team took over the union’s leadership in June 2010, Robin Potter & Associates has been paid more than $1 million to handle discrimination cases and other matters involving teachers.

In 2013-14, the union paid more than $1.2 million to Robin Potter and two other law firms: $361,159 to Robin Potter; $500,201 to Dowd, Bloch & Bennett, for bargaining issues; and 361,958 to Poltrock & Poltrock, for employment law issues, the records show. It spent another $241,536 on in-house lawyers.

Robin Potter hadn’t done paid legal work for the CTU before Lewis and her team took office, says Jesse Sharkey, the union’s vice president.

Sharkey replaced Jackson Potter on CORE’s slate of candidates for union office after Jackson Potter dropped out of the 2010 union election amid a court fight over whether he was eligible.

Sharkey says Jackson Potter’s job as CTU staff coordinator has nothing to do with the payments to Potter’s mother’s law firm.

“Her son doesn’t have any influence over who we hire,” Sharkey says of Robin Potter.

Those decisions are made by the union’s board, Sharkey says.

As staff coordinator, Potter says he serves as a sort-of “chief of staff” for union leadership, “making sure our various departments are working in concert and coordinating activities.” He says he plays no role in his mother’s dealings with the union.

As a CPS teacher I continue to be disgusted by the delay in response to Friday's event. As the above poster noted, if Karen Lewis were upset by Page May's remarks would have said something immediately. That must mean the CTU leadership, along with a large part of their executive board support those statements. What's more astonishing is the executive board member Sarah Chambers (@sarah4justice Twitter handle) who stridently defends May's actions and takes time to point out all of the many ways whites are racist simply because they disagree with May.

CTU and their kissing the asses of the BLM movement is certainly making bad blood between teachers and CPD. A public apology is the only acceptable way to save face. Forget about sending a letter to the FOP. Pull all resources now. Screw CPS and CTU. Teachers are looking like fools from their union.

This groups opinion of the police is far more widespread than most of you realize. They aren't very good at math that's for sure. For some odd reason they feel that police shooting of young armed black men makes up a preponderance of black shooting deaths in this city and around the country. They have a blind eye to the thousands of shootings and killings perpetuated by young blacks against each other. For the record, their track record of teaching math doesn't appear much better.

Now, Karen Lewis wants to teach the CPD how to do their jobs:

Lewis: "Cops are not our enemies," Lewis told the crowd. "If they let us, we will make them more helpful. Our kids are not criminals."

Lewis didn't say anything about condemning Page May's rant or offering an apology for inviting her to speak at the teacher's rally, especially when Lewis knew full-well of May's platform.

The question isn't whether or not she is a member of CTU or teaching in a CPS school. The issue is if her group, Assata's Daughters, has received any sort of funding from CTU. Because the other neighborhood groups that participated in last week's "day of action" all receive significant funding from CTU. So if CTU didn't sanction her message - which essentially is that of Assata's Daughters - why would CTU let her speak to begin with or provide them funding?

Look who took part in the April Fool's Fest Madness (list given by CTU, no mention of Assata's Daughters):

This was part of an email sent to CTU members today from Jesse Sharkey, VP of CTU. Immediately after this, he asked teachers to participate in upcoming "actions" here and in Springfield. Thanks, but no thanks, Jesse.

"We ended the day with an exclamation point. One expert who counts crowds at marches told us that 20,000 people showed up for our 4 p.m. rally. Although one speaker went off message and condemned police in a way that our Union does not condone, and we regret what was said, the rally was a resounding success. We hope that this unexpected incident, which could not be predicted, does not obscure the tremendous power and momentum we created on April 1. The fact is that our expanding coalition will increase our chances to win progressive revenue and governance reforms before the summer and into the fall."

Page May aligns herself with the radical group, Daughters of Assata. Assata Shakur is a convicted cop killer who escaped prison, and has been living in exile in Cuba for several years. If you glorify and exalt a convicted cop killer, it's no wonder why you're on a megaphone screaming eff the police. Shame on the CTU and its so called leaders.

That chick is so clueless. She thinks that the shooting of Laquan MacDonald justifies Page May's actions. Karen even publicly said that the police are not the enemy, so why is she allowing this moron to be on the CTU board and spew her idiotic garbage? By the way, Sarah, it wasn't only "racist" white people that were offended. There are plenty of officers and supporters of all races who don't appreciate May's ignorant and dangerous comments.
