Detective Exam Day

For the first time in what? Eleven years?

About f#$%ing time.

We'll leave this spot open for horror stories about the 12-hour test encompassing what used to be two separate testing dates - we're sure there will be a couple.

Good luck to everyone, insofar as you score below us.

What's this envelope from Eugene Williams that was left on our doorstep last night?

SO many stories of time due denied and (non-exam) events being trashed by time off canceled last-minute. Mother's Day, college graduations, First Communions and proms this weekend. My sympathy to all of you trying to juggle all of it.

From an old retired dick.

Best of luck to all you guys and gals taking the test. It' a great job and you will have to bust your asses at time. Play by the set rules, cause there is no pinch worth getting you thrown in club fed or fired. Write those reports how it happened, creative writing will fuck you. Trick bagging a career criminal that did not do the crime is immoral and could bite you in the ass years later.
Buy good shoes and carry two guns. Working a case for 48 hours straight is good O.T and limit those to one a year. Have a life outside of the squad or your arteries will clog up and you will be on the desk after a H.A.

Seen many a good dick' hit the floor many times after stopping after the tour and going home after the last round at the gin mill. Many die before they see 25 years on the job. Pizza everyday is a killer.

Learn from the calm, type B and cool dick's, They know the system well. Fuck the late list cause you will always have 20 hand outs in your in box. Criminal lawyers and asa' are not your friends !! They will use you to their benefit.

Lots of O.T to be made but don't be a hog kids !!

God be with you all.

PS- There are many dick' that could not find a gun at Shores Gallery !! Beware of them.

Because of political correctness and cheating, scores will not be known for 6 months to a year, instead of before you leave the building, as in past times. Was the only legit test on the department.

Part 1 Written was 18 Dec 2004 (results sent 18 Feb 05).
Part 2 Logic was 23 Apr 2005 (results sent 8 Aug 05)
First promotions off the list were around Jan 2006 (?).

To bad. There's 4,000 chumalones taking an exam that is meant to offset diversity, not intellectually solving crime.
Good Luck to the only the top 7% that will eventually be chosen to join the ranks of BigCityDicks, then there's the shameless standard lot of 20% merit hacks and the remaining 73% (with no measurable communication skills or work ethic), will be...well...you know.

We all will see how legitimate this exam is going to be and watch for the New Transparent Department to post the List with Scores and Rankings without delay.

It used to be tough to make detective, even without the phony merit picks. But, it was and I am sure it still is, the greatest job on the department. It remains one of my best memories and my former squad mates still meet on occasion . Patrol officers are not treated well. You will see the difference once you make an area. If you do make detective, stay there and never take another promotional examination.

It's all legit kid... If you haven't figured out that this is the most corrupt promotion process in the most corrupt police dept in the most corrupt city in the world than I have a few magic beans to sell you. Being a Detective used to be a source of pride and a career high light years ago. Those days are gone thanks to so many who destroyed any resemblance of real policing in the United States. Oh yeah and if by some miracle this test is not thrown out because of the hundreds of inevitable law suits because of the stupidest possible way to give a promotional test, and you actually beat the odds of not being passed over by all the super duper cream of the crop "merit" picks then have fun chasing down "witnesses" to ghetto agg batts and filling out hours of useless progress reports, oh yeah and also never seeing your family. Oh well, it's all legit anyways right?

If they wanted there to be any credibility to the process, of course they would tell you your scantron score immediately. There would be no reason not to.

12 hours for the testing is very grueling, but when you're a det, you'll really feel the pain after a straight 48 hours putting a case together and getting it charged, and then come back the next day for more. Hope the legit make it first, but the past has shown us the meritorious will always cut in no matter how well or poorly they did on the test. Very discouraging for the legit, but nepotism and the buddy system have ruled this department forever. To the legit numbers, I wish you all the best. In my opinion, it is the best position in this department.

The one and only reason any test was tossed out was because of a lack of minorities. Other then that no one cares. The courts don't care and the connected sure love this system. Promotion examinations should be completely taken out of the hands of the city, just because Chicago is the most corrupt city in America in the most corrupt county in the most corrupt state. Daley turned the police department into his own personal patronage system, even worse then when he got to be mayor.

OT: in 3

Can someone please confirm if the rumor in 3 true please?

Did 360 tell some officers "I'm the lieutenant, I can do whatever I want" ???

Heard some officers were being targeted by one of the tact sgts. Then when LT got the word he ignored the real issues. Immediately after, the officers were kicked to the curb.

If true...

No LT you cannot do whatever you want. There are policies in place which protect blue shirts from harassment and discrimination. Guess being a tact LT with much clout can make you feel that way. Your wicked ways are unkind and unjust. No thank you for the maltreatment.

If false...

Just beause you are a wash out do nothing fool it does not give you the right to spread rumors about a boss who is just doing their job. Get over it. Do your job.

So if your are rdo today you got to "volunteer" to work at time n half to cover for those who are taking the test! Really, why is the shortage of officers different today than any other day?
And, here is a question, probably not on the test. Let say one po observes another committing a crime (while on the clock). One super is working out while the other is snoozen. The one who observes said criminal behavior is not part of the special circle of the taken care of , the thieving po is. Who can the observing po contact regarding the theft? Does the observer just close their eyes, knowing that nothing will be addressed when it comes to the thief? Or is there anybody out there who does actually care about the bs that goes on and if so who might that be? Any suggestions?

Agreed. I came on the job because I wanted to be a detective. I couldn't take the last test. Missed it by a couple months. My career is more than halfway over now and I was finally able to take the detective test. I wish I had the same drive and motivation I would have had 11 years ago. But, oh well, I guess I will remain a P.O. for the next 10 years or so. Although I did take the sergeant test, I have no desire to be a boss. I just took it to see what it was like. This detective test was my second, and last, test I will ever take. Good luck to those who are young enough on the job to still have an opportunity to take another one if they didn't do well on this one.

What a fucking day- 0700-1825 for me. Part one seemed more difficult than part two. Still prob scored over 1k. Good luck to all.
5/07/2016 10:19:00 PM

I agree.

My guess why part 2 & part 3 "seemed" easy was that you could WRITE in any answer YOU thought was correct.

Part one only gave you 4 choices and in some questions the answers were similar which made people sometimes have to guess.

I've met many a person who walks out of the tests saying "I killed that test" or " that test was too easy". When rank score comes out they score over 700. Both of them. They rack their brain and can't understand why they ranked so high. Rest assured the tests are designed this way. Anyone can rationalize why they answered a question a certain way. Since we never receive our graded tests we will NOT know if we correctly answered any question without truly knowing the order a question came from. I, for one, studied and thought the test came with some curve balls. I find it hard anyone KNEW everything on that test....unless you had some "help". Good luck to all. I'll be scoring in the 1000's too.

5/07/2016 11:07:00 PM

Yes, it is absolutely true. They announced it to everyone stating that if you're only interested in the merit selection, write your name on your cover sheet and you can leave at any time. What a fucking joke! And yes there were spelling errors on the test as well as other errors that were pointed out by people taking the test. Honestly, the test wasn't anywhere near what I expected it to be. Seemed like a half assed attempt of something thrown together at the last minute. Most of it didn't even seem relevant except for maybe the last part of the written test. Hardly any questions regarding general orders and other pertinent job knowledge. "Subjective" is an understatement...

Here's the real skinny on CPD promotional exams...

They're intentionally drawn up to have enough subjective
"Choose The Best Answer" bullshit which allow the city
to keep too many Herbs, Squares and Boy Scouts from
gaining a solid representative footing in the investigative
and supervisory ranks.

Y'all might fuck around and hurt somebody with clout
If/when they step on their dick/put a foot up their own pussy...

The 11th & 19th Wards can't have that.
Daley Inc./Rahm & Co. can't have that.
The alderfools can't have that.
The hypocritical, drinking from
the cup of eternal damnation, false doctrine
spewing, phony-assed West and South Side
clergy can't have that either...

"Best Answer" is an intentionally ambiguous,
Built in control dee-vice.

Too many upright, uncontrolled, no favor owing investigators
and supervisors would fuck this department up for the clouted
and give too many regular people a more than even break.

That.
Must never be allowed to happen.

Shit...
You churls will be wanting to take it to
elected officialdom and the media if
you ever gain a solid footing on this job
or in this town.

Regardless if you know the material, 10+ hours for a test with 4000 competitors, in a 45 degree room, for a promotion that happenes once a decade, is poorly executed. That was the mental equivalent to running on a treadmill for 10 hours. By hour 8, your brain is mush, your back is sore, your bladder is full, your will is gone, and your eyesight is dull. How can you get a fair score when you are so exhausted. My newly acquired detective skills have told me someone will sue. Good.

SO some left after the 1st part of test?

FOP here is a clue FOIA the names of the candidates that did not take part 2 of the test.

DEAN??? So much college and the guy still think he will outsmart RAHM.

Or you others who feel wronged will file yourselves. Worse thing that can happen is they make you merit.

When they announced that they had a special announcement to make, I thought they were gonna tell us that they fixed the heat. F*&^/#$@ merit b.s.!

Good.

It was announced from the beginning that both parts were on the same day. You were given notice to expect a 12 hour day. If you didn't like that, don't take the test. Good luck with a lawsuit.

Will you officers please stop paying for study groups? Especially the Bernstein dude. You took a test to get on the damn job, you carry a gun, you make life altering decisions for yourself and others every day you go to work. You should be competent enough to study and memorize the materials provided. Bernstein is a con man, and you goofs have to stop making him rich. Give your alderman the $2000. Your odds at getting promoted are much better.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I didn't do any of the study groups, special study groups, or have merit to fall back on during the last test. I looked at each order and figured out why the department was covering their ass and throwing the the next PO under the bus. That ended up scoring me into the first class. I would save the money!

Seeing as there will probably not be another promotional exam in the next decade, it doesn't really matter; but for those who care and for what it's worth, the money I spent for the Bernstein class was absolutely, positively worth every dime. It will pay for itself in the first two months after I finish Lt class.

The best part of the exam was when the director/P.A. announcer gave the instructions to the merit assholes when to raise their hand so they can be assisted in leaving before the start of the second part of the exam. That was fucken priceless. I'll never take another CPD promotional exam again. Great job juice babies!!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If this is indeed true, any and all officers should have the fortitude to contact the Chicago Inspector General's office, as this would be just further evidence of the misconduct and lack of transparency in CPD's testing/promotional process. And you need to tell FOP to make reduction in merit promotions a part of the negotiation process in the next CBA.

Oh fuck you both! Most of us waited 11 years for this! It's bad enough they're letting POs with 3 years on take it. 2 years on and you want to be detective? Have you ever even arrested anyone on an IA, for a robbery, burglary, or murder?! C'mon.

5/08/2016 04:34:00 PM

With how long they left the last list up they need low seniority people to take it. And if you make detective (early money is on you won't) you'll be praying for the young guys to make it too so you get a furlough segment later than February.

There were probably somewhere between 2500-3000 people there. That announcement about the merit puerile was kind of bs. They should've just said in the beginning, if you want to be eligible for merit only, you need to pass part 1 and don't have to show for part 2. I also think that announcement was for a lot of the people who didn't study and just wanted to get the fuck out of there.

Did M.B. churches have communions? No? Interesting.

5/08/2016 07:58:00 AM

You're wrong. I took communion at an MB church before. Now it's not normal for them to do it more than monthly but they take it. Not sure where your misinformation is coming from.

Because of all the secret and clouted study groups, the FOP brought in Bernstein
years ago, to give honest coppers a fair shot. I'm retired now and enjoying Arizona.
I'm enjoying the fresh air, the peace and quiet. I'm also enjoying a higher pension.
Why ? Bernstein. If you really want to advance , just study and take Bernstein!

Now, one final piece of advice

The Anger many of you have will affect your health. Learn to relax! The FOP has classes for that.
Focus on what you can do to make the CPD a better place. Try to accept the fact that some things don't change, it's just up to you to deal with it as best you can! If you get real angry about it, it will affect your health.
Trust me, I know.
Thank You for being the Police!!!

Please tell me that you're kidding.

When the proctor said that " would the merit raise their hands and quietly exit the exam room ", we though it was a fucking joke to cheer up the candidates. At least I didn't see anyone leaving the room only because I was sitting way up front. Yes, this department selective promotion process is a fucking joke and it will never change.. I've been on this job almost 14 years and when I started studying and signed up for the ET and Detective exams, I already knew that I was taking a risk and had slim to none chance of getting promoted. But like I've been telling the guys, don't fucking bitch if you didn't make an effort to study and take the test. For those who doesn't have clout and studied their asses off, I really wish you goodluck and remember where you came from. Be humble and you'll get RESPECT from US, blue shirts..

I like the coppers who say, "you knew it was 12 hours, you are pussies, deal with it" yeah, we all understand that tough guy, but are you going to say the same things when you realize you did terrible? Don't be a douchbag.
