Rahm, Mrs Lucas Switch Tactics

  • With Los Angeles and San Francisco breathing down Chicago’s neck, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday made one last stab at keeping movie mogul George Lucas’ museum in Chicago: an end-run around a federal judge that experts called a legal long-shot.

Emanuel asked the federal appeals court to issue a writ of mandamus — ordering U.S. District Judge John Darrah to dismiss a Friends of the Parks lawsuit that Darrah kept alive. The lawsuit challenges the mayor’s original plan to give Lucas 17 acres of lakefront land near Soldier Field.
Rahm, being a ballerina and not a lawyer, is intent on wasting more taxpayer dollars on an Ego Monument, not just for George, but for himself, and his inability to actually run something successfully. Legal experts have already declared this a "long shot" and pretty much dead on arrival.

Mrs Lucas is trying for the guilt trip approach:
  • Hobson said the museum would bring more than $2 billion in economic benefit to the city, thousands of jobs and education opportunities for children.

"As an African-American who has spent my entire life in this city I love, it saddens me that young black and brown children will be denied the chance to benefit from what this museum will offer," she said.
Wow. We had no idea that the only black and brown children interested in Star Wars lived in Chicago! Did you know that? Man, do we feel guilty that a billionaire won't be able to buy himself a massive ego boost by dumping a building that looks like a giant albatross dropping on the lakefront.

George should look at this as being better off anyway. Anything built in Chicago in the past two or three decades is falling apart, collapsing, leaking, polluted, and generally crappy in design and function.

Plus, the amount of payoffs due to Chicago pols would make Obi-Wan have to reevaluate his pointed criticism of Mos Eisley Spaceport.

Junky old movie props and dated posters of carrie fisher in a funny hair style. What relevance does that have to a black or brown child in this day and age?

The wholly unwarranted playing of the race card killed ANY questions I had about this project.
I am a white female who grew up in Chicago, Mellody, and I have every bit as much concern for 'the children' and everyone else in this city. Probably more, because my concern is for ALL of them, not just those with a tan (or lack of a tan).
Even all of George's money didn't buy you class, Mellody.

The design of the memorial for George Lucas looks like a big gangly, ugly furnace. If Melody Hobson is so worried about black and brown children (whites need not visit I guess--vervy nerve) then she should have hubby build the thing in their neighborhoods. Not fancy enough for her probably. She is darn pompous to think that building that ugly thing will bring in 2 billion dollars to the city....heck, the way new technology is moving...no one will want to go to a stuffy museum to walk around to look at old Rockwells and R2D2 with his squeaky, silly voice. Take the thing to another city.

It definitely would be a "destination" place and be good for tourism. ANY city in Illinois accepting a $1 Billion shot in the arm is going to benefit from it from an economic development standpoint.

The BIG question is, who are the "Friends of the Park" and what money do they have backing them?

We have a far better idea...
Since George Lucas is so m/fing hot
to leave something to posterity,
we suggest he lies in state as a

Rahm will be in a wheel-chair,

If she's so bent on building it for children of brown and black color then why isn't it built in Bronzeville, Chatham, South Chicago? There's more than enough vacant land. Put it in impoverished neighborhoods to raise their economic status. Put it at the old Michael Reese. No, this is the classic "I'm rich" so you have to kiss my ass and give me what I want. Bye George and Melody. We have a big enough eyesore on the lake with the flying saucer over Soldier Field.

From a troll reader taxpayer: I would like to see the whole museum idea and the people behind it moved to either LA or Frisco. You are right SCC, this is nothing but a huge ego monument to all involved and that can be easily demonstrated by listening to what is being said. Secondly, a learning experience for children? No, we should build a monument to a learning experience that teaches children how to read, write and perform mathmatical functions at the least, grade level. A monument for example could be a working school on the lake front. Finally, do not believe ANY of the numbers anyone tosses out into the public. We taxpayers will get hosed on this and the ego manics will skate off free of responsibility like they did with the bean park. Remember that deal? It will only cost $250mil and it will generate all kinds of excitement and revenue. Well it cost about $450mil and there is all kinds of corruption and hi-jinx associated with it. Rahm, work on balancing the city finances and fund our pension obligations. Either turn the CPS over to the state or get your nose to the grind stone. Get Karen out of the way and do what needs to be done at that circus. The last thing you need to worry about is the Lucas Museum. You priorities are all messed up son.

"As an African-American who has spent my entire life in this city I love, it saddens me that young black and brown children will be denied the chance to benefit from what this museum will offer," said Melody Hobson -- who looms so large in the lives of ordinary people that I had never even heard of her until just now.

As a European-American who was also born here, it disgusts me that "young black and brown children" are being played as a race card to try to ram through an ugly monument to America's self-selected elite. Bauhaus termite nest, modernistic trash burner obstructing the lake view.

We have reached the limit of this constant Tawana Brawley-style shrieking of "racism." Sometimes people get their fingers burned playing these games. To wit --

Three New York college students indicted for 'faking race hate attack' and falsely reporting incident which sparked protests

* Ariel Aguido, Asha Burwell and Alexis Briggs, claimed they were attacked
* The three students claimed their assault on a bus was racially motivated
* Police pressed charges against them, saying they instigated the incident

These Massive Futuristic Gondolas Could One Day Cruise Above Chicago River

May 3, 2016 7:29pm

"RIVER NORTH — [Styling] themselves "mad messengers" and "two crazy dreamers," a pair of Chicago business leaders proposed major gains to "ignite tourism" as an economic engine Tuesday in a speech to the City Club.

"Laurence Geller, head of Geller Capital Partners, and Lou Raizin, founder of Broadway in Chicago, unveiled...proposals for...aerial gondolas running along the Chicago River to Navy Pier, as well as live performances projected onto the back riverside wall of the Civic Opera House..."

Othello and Der Rosenkavalier to edify the growing number of homeless Chicagoans!

http://tinyurl.com/jmrlnb2

As in other cities --

"Gotham’s tax base has crumbled...tourists, as it turns out, are the key element here, for today’s New York, unable to sustain itself on indigenous revenues alone, now relies increasingly on an influx of cash from wide-eyed outsiders who come to town to see the sights and, naturally, spend some dough. The sad irony, of course, is that the dismantling of the city’s manufacturing base over the past few decades, which has necessitated this tourism-dependent approach, has also made New York a much less interesting place to visit. Once a city teeming with light industry...New York is now a perfect example of the country’s shift away from production and toward a service economy."

It definitely would be a "destination" place and be good for tourism. ANY city in Illinois accepting a $1 Billion shot in the arm is going to benefit from it from an economic development standpoint.

The BIG question is, who are the "Friends of the Park" and what money do they have backing them?

From an outsider's perspective, they seem to be a lot more powerful than some typical "do-gooder" group.

Say what you want about the Lucas Museum, I think it would have been good for Chicago's weakening economy. (YES - WEAKENING!! Chicago needs some "new stuff".)

There's that lie, again. Lucas was putting up 723 Mil. Not a Billion. And the city wants to borrow 1.2 billion to tear down McCormick East, for Lucas.

Friends of the Park appear to be exactly that. There was an initial shift on the McCormick site, but came back to their principles and said no to Lakefront development.

Where's the money from? How do they profit? By standing up for a long standing principle. They stood up to Daley II over the Kohls museum.
They're doing the same here.

Jobs. For Who?

And the hordes will be flocking to Chicago for this?

That Hollywood Crap belongs in Hollywood not here in Chicago. Or he can go and put it up in Gary Indiana , they need a Museum there lol . Rahm needs to put it up here for he can make more Millions and then tell the people again that the city has no money . Then he'll suddenly pull more millions out of Ass when he needs another project he Favors. RAM it up his Ass just like he does that to all the people in Chicago. If its not his way , Its the Highway to all.

To the webmaster.
Now that you have everyone's attention this is the time to post a topic. Without a property tax increase what are your ideas to find funding for our pension? We are at the crossroads, this problem has been in the making for the past 50 years and going back to then is not an answer. You can point fingers and assign blame but that is not an answer. Passing a Bill to increase the funding ratio without legislating where the funds will come from is not an answer. Just post comments that have actual ideas and block the nonsense make our officers think this through. I hope we get 1,000 comments but the over and under is set at 38.

Actual Truth here you go Greg:

Tifs how much in them? Billions?

Miles and miles of bike lanes at what cost?

Maggie Daley park?

Free city services to the daleys park grill how many millions gone poof?

Your building a pathetic team depaul a stadium how much was given to elected via envelopes?

How many coppers short? Where is that money moved to?

why Greg now bellow loudly do the exempt club get a healthy pension grab of money" Why is pension not stopped at "career service rank?" Why does the fop say nothing about rahm getting D-3 paid and pensioned at sergeants rate coppers taking another helping of undeserved pension money?

606 (criminal hunting ground trail?)

Building another trail through gang infested pilsen how many more hundreds of millions gone?

As a matter of fact Greg bellow about the street coppers everyday being railroaded by media and such, are you in hiding? Open up the mouth bellow on this!! As a matter of fact Greg your getting a pension at what rate is it d-4,5,6? How much you getting in a "double helping" working or so called showing up at fop hall?

Rahm wants to give lakefront land away to a private couple AND spend billions of dollars of tax money to replace part of McCormick Place ($1.6 billion PLUS cost overruns PLUS interest). Then you can connect it to the Obama museum buy a lovely new train.

It can stop right by Father Fakers Parish would he dare sell any land?

Yet No black Alderman are offering any land in their actual Wards. Lets give up the most valuable land right smack dab in front of Buckingham fountain. And if RAHM is saying knock McCormick place down, why are we building a basketball stadium?

The Media keep talking about billions but show never show any actual numbers! How many years would it take to make millions and a museums which would soak up tax dollars from the museum tax?
Yep their is a museum tax and only official museum can use it. Check your county taxes! And they still will charge Chicago residence to enter.

The garbage tax will save us all when they raise it to 30$ a month and tax on a recycle fee pops up too.

Old Retired Guy Here, Again !!!! Had to chime in, on this one. I use the lake front often. To wit; Walk, Ride Bicycle. I love the lake front, and want it kept, as unmolested as possible. I joined "Friends of the Parks" yesterday, with a small fifty dollar, tax exempt, donation. I feel they have a good argument. Preserving our lake front, is not a new concept. It has been going on for over one hundred and fifty years. Once we give into one project, it's over. Let me just add this observation. The power structure of this city, does not have a good tract record, with projects. Look at the "MESS" they made of Soldier Field. Check out Northerly Island. After Daley tore it up, they should have left it be. Now they have made an ongoing "Mess" of it. Anyway, stay safe, and keep up the good fight.

They did try. As I recall, it even caused a few resignations amongst their highest ranks when the mayor and the President's reps put the screws to them. The problem is, Friends of the Parks has limited resources and ultimately had to decide which war to fight. They had some influence on the choice of location, but it's pretty much all they could get.

Let's put it this way --

There was a time when my family tried to avoid days when busloads from certain areas of the city arrived at one of our lovely museums.

The screaming that echoed from the high vaults of the ceiling, the thunderous mass running on the marble floors that similarly resounded through the building like an artillery barrage, the cursing, the shoving...

Beat on -- don't push -- all of the buttons of an operating exhibit, although one does not have the attention span to stand still and wait for the beginning of the action and narration. Rush on to the next, hand-smearing the thick Plexiglas display cases all the way. Anything unprotected had to be bolted down, welded solid, and anything breakable would still be damaged.

What had been learned, what had been absorbed when the horde finally exploded back out the doors? It can't have been much.

In the absence of understanding, interest, insight, direction, or supervision, "design for the lowest common denominator" became the watchword of the exhibit construction/maintenance people. I saw a 2" thick armored-glass window in an historic undersea vessel punctured. It had once withstood 15,000 feet of ocean pressure -- now there was a trickle of dried spittle on the inside, obviously expelled inward through the new hole.

As I said, we tried to schedule our visits -- it became necessary to do so more than fifty years ago.

There was a time.

Not anymore. http://sps.columbia.edu/sustainability-management/faculty/aaron-koch-Biography

The function of city government today is to make you pay until you bleed, while removing all choices about your life and your future, right down to cigarettes and plastic bags, and commissioning huge projects that don't have a bathroom but do have the effect of driving everyone out of the neighborhood so that a "task force on homelessness" can be convened to provide continued fat paychecks for others.

We need gondolas whizzing over the Chicago River -- and bigger ferris wheels!

Get it? Got it? Good.

Now tilt your head back and stare in awe and say go-o-lly at the coming 93-story luxury hotel/condos/"high-end boutiques" you will never set foot in. It is, after all, being built by "the richest man in China."
