Wait, What?

  • Huffington Post Contributor Michael Sitver writes that during the uproar at Milo Yiannopoulos’ event at DePaul last night, Chicago PD officers were not refusing to intervene due to fears of racism accusations, as some had speculated online, but because of a direct order from university administrators to stay out of it.

According to the article, Chicago police “wanted to do their job” but were instructed by campus administrators to “stand passively and watch.”
So a political speech sponsored by the DePaul College Republican was infiltrated and interrupted by protestors (naturally) and on scene security refused to protect the invitee's right to speak, then ordered the Chicago Police to stand down when they observed actual violations of the law not related to the First Amendment? Things like Assaults and Batteries?

What the hell was all this about?

I wasn't there, so I can't call this one. But on it's face as reported, how are Chicago police officers obeying (yes, obeying) orders from civilian campus administrators? Are they in your chain of command now? Do you stand by and watch thugs trample the Constitutionally protected rights of those who are considered conservative in favor of the communists? Please explain. This is interesting to many civilian members of Chicago who otherwise support you. We are veterans and support law enforcement, but how long must this go on? Thugs getting in your faces, and now obvious crimes being committed that, had they been committed against the left, would presumably result in charges or hate crimes? Please explain this to us so that we might understand.

Liberalism at its finest hour, displaying tolerance and inclusiveness.

Someday the silent majority will grow tired of the criminal protests/riots of liberals, under the guise of 'freedom of speech', by putting an end to their actions. When that day comes, it won't be pretty for the liberals.

The Speakers should sue the University. And any police supervisor who is assigned to a venue and then lets the administration of that venue to tell them what to do, is a Moron and Incompetent. If the people in charge of the venue are going to direct YOUR work, then let them deploy their Security Personnel and let them assume full liability for what happens. I was a Sergeant for twenty five years, and if I would have shown up at a function and been told what to do by the "host", for the protection of my officers and to reduce exposure to litigation, my response would have been: "We are leaving, now." Where is the leadership in the Chicago Police Department? Is anybody with a police background in charge? Is the entire leadership nothing more than Political Hacks? I'm not saying that we should rush out and do a bunch of ISR's but when a person is denied the right to free speech, it's time to take a stand. Take our country back from the thugs that do things like that or confront the Police and get in their face in a stare down contest or block interstates or prevent people from shopping at stores or going about their business or waving flags of foreign countries as they try to supress free speech. Like the man says, lets make America great again.

And to think that we are spending millions to build De Paul a stadium by Mc Cormick Place!! The Hynes political clan is selling the idea by claiming it will make the convention center more marketable?? If the administrators would allow this to happen at the future stadium, that would put the city in a position to be a respondent in future litigation? De Paul does not have a campus police force since they do not want armed individuals protecting their students -who are frequently victims of violent crime. Give us tuition so we can fail to protect you while we give you a half-assed, politically correct education. This stadium will be as useful as the new Ferris wheel at Navy Pier. Bread & circuses will appease the uneducated voters. Right Rahm?

A university is private property just like Macy's. Mall security has to sign complaints if they are not happy with students disrupting another's privately invited speech also there isn't first amendment protection inside private property. The university was the issue. No battery or threat occurred in front of police. The moronic, uneducated comments by those that don't even know there job or the law is the reason why we make ourselves look terrible.

Google DePaul and Milo and read through the news stories. Very entertaining!
I did notice a curious absence of coverage from ABC, CBS, NBC, WGN. Wonder why this isn't newsworthy to Chicago, just the rest of the country?
People are noticing nonetheless, the DePaul fakebook page has had thousand of 1 star votes.
One person was arrested. A journalist who had permission from DePaul to film who refused to stop filming when the liberals decided this might look bad for them. Hope he sues!
There was a story about the prof who teaches/ trains and congratulates this type of behavior. Where is the outcry to have her fired?

Its been an education watching how PDs across the country handle the Trump rallies. Some are organized and do their job- evsn dragging out protesters while others (Chicago, Albuquerque) allow chaos and violence.

As the first line of defense, I urge you to stand up to this crap and arrest those that break the law, not give people a free pass because they were protesting or waving a Mexican flag. Sorry, but the officers who took orders from the school are part of the problem.

First off why were the police there in the first place? Were they requested by DePaul before hand or were they called when the outspoken Utes took ouver the stage? Part of the reason no action was taken I believe is no one on stage as you can see called out for security or the police. If you notice on the clip the female who is monitoring keeps telling the crowd to let them talk and never asked for security.I saw a couple of CPD supervisors when the side door opened and they took no action. If the DePaul bosses told the CPD on scene to take no action at that point I would have pulled the troops out and gave them the have a nice day. During these times if they are telling you don't interfere why would you want to get involved. Case in point look at the UIC Trump rally. UIC also asked CPD to stay out. Pack it up and leave and let DePaul figure it out. there security was also told to take no action.19P. Keep moving nothing more to see here. Save yourself a headache and a CR#.

Sounds like a North side problem. Next time dispatcher code it out to the University and do your job.

You will notice that OEMC dispatched so nobody can blame them and NO white shirt waved the job off.

And now once again a lowly blue shirt is hung out to dry because he wanted to be nice and not arrest privileged students.

And quit processing arrest from school POLICE they are certified under the state as law enforcement so have them come into district and process the arrest like the State troopers. But of course your SGT will not know any of this and order you to do it so have all school officers come in for a full interview regarding the arrest. The school will become enraged because they only have a few officers to patrol. The best part is when the school sends their white shirt out who is a clouted retiree from the Chicago Police Dept. I tell them it is great they work for the school so they can process the arrest and I put them in the witness box as ordering the school police.

After a considerable amount of time and effort from law enforcement, the crowd moved, but not before many climbed on street lights and other sidewalk objects, and taunted the officers.

At one point protesters began yelling, “Hey hey, ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go.” As they were continually moved out ,protesters could be heard repeating “F**k Donald Trump and f**k the police.”

Chicago Police Officers do not take orders from any civilian entity. What the University Administrators desire isn't our concern when we observe violations of the law. It's apparent the officers on scene didn't know what to do and their supervisors were just as clueless. If you walk into a store on a shoplifter and see a battery, or a guy with a pistol and the store owner says just leave them alone, we don't want anything done, would you just leave them alone? Hell no. You would make the appropriate arrest and document the fact that the owner/administrator declined to cooperate. I blame the officers for this. They were too weak to act. If the administrators interfered with the officers doing their job, then Rahm could have posted bail for his buddies, but shame on the officers for not acting, and for bowing to the wished of civilians just because of some position they hold.

DePaul is a private university. Since they felt they could contain that situation on their own (which they are perfectly allowed to
do on their own property), why was CPD there in the first place? Every single CPD officer should have beat feet in a hasty retreat, where their presence (and services) would have been much more appreciated on the city's streets.
The only thing worse than being a college cop is being a college cop at a private college. You think our mucked up agency has been pre-empted by city politicians? You ain't haven't seen ANYTHING until you work as a private college campus police officer. when called to a disturbance call at any university or private sc hool the correct thing to do is meet with their security or person in charge and ask what the problem is, when they tell you the issue but say they don't want any arrests just a show of force it is the supervisor in charge of the CPD to inform that person that we will leave unless you as the police see a violation of the law committed in your presence such as a battery. I would then take the troops and retreat making the dispatcher aware in no uncertain terms that they don't want any police service. this a matter of record. However since I'm an old school Sergeant with many years dispatched to many different types of events this is my opinion, but you coppers out there are being supervised by the NEW BREED.

If you see the longer video which has been posted, the blonde from the College Republicans does announce that the Chicago Police Department had been called to help take control of the situation. She also warned people to remain seated so as not to be caught up in the mob action when the police arrived (presumably to make arrests).

Of course, nothing actually happened and the meeting simply broke down. The security guards (both from DePaul and a private firm) did nothing at all.

Another interesting thing to see on the longer videotape is that a black female took the stage and called for calm and order. She criticized the BLM protesters for their disrespectful behavior. In return, the BLM gang began to denounce her as a bigot and a white supremacist. She argued that she was trying to study mathematics and make something of her life by finding a job as opposed to the BLM fakers.

I was there, we weren't ordered to stand by. We told DePaul security it was their responsibility to control the situation because it is private property. They had to request us to intervene and in the two times they did, we did. Basic criminal trespass situation, the security agents never ordered the people to leave and never asked us to arrest them for trespassing. The "battery" happened when we weren't in the room, when we entered no one would tell us anything. No victim, no crime.

muckitty muck at the CPD? Really? Some civilian in a politically appointed position is a muckitty muck? She's some $80K a year secretary with a title.

Name JOHNSON, JUANITA H

Position Title DIR OF ADMINISTRATION II

Department POLICE

Employee Annual Salary $87,324.00

Her title gives off the air of a "muckitty muck"
Although I'm quite sure you're right it's most likely a useless, political position.

In any event this employee's daughter is a huge POS who was heavily involved in the DePaul debacle.

@1025 what state law requires you to take action?

Citizens in the audience asked the CPD to respond.

Does the CPD have a responsibility to respond to citizen complaints or not?

To say no one asked them to respond is not honest.

Outsider w/a comment.

Congratulations, the CPD looks like idiots. People see this, and they do not care that it was private property, or that some administrator told you to stand down. People saw violence and intimidation, and no one doing anything. What people saw was the Chicago Police not doing their job.

If you aren't going to do anything, then you should have announced that and left.
If you were not sure what was happening, why didn't you walk up to the stage and ask a few questions?
Name the people that told you to stand down!
Name the names, or the titles.

You stood there in a mob, looking confused and sheepish.
So much for a positive image of the CPD.

I know it's a tough concept in this age of cell phone videographers, but often it isn't ABOUT the 'visual'. It's about the law.
We aren't a tv show, put there for your entertainment. You don't get to vote us off the island. What you like, don't like, however you interpret the visual... well, that's not our purpose. It isn't all about you, your perceptions, your feeling offended or disappointed.

The guards at Depaul University do not have police powers and are not certified as law enforcement. They are security guards, nothing more. The head of DePaul security is a retired LT. Other universities have security certified as police but not the very liberal DePaul University. Let Depaul security sign any complaints before you make an arrest. The last thing Depaul faculty wants are armed police on the campus. I would remain fetal until ordered by CPD supervisor to take any action.

The real criminals hold office and are put there by the majority of voters. The ole shit in shit out rule. If there was only a way to direct a majority of the consequences back on those who deserve it the most.

Consider the comments of the Women and Gender Studies faculty at DePaul concerning the recent incident and the Chicago Police Department:

"A few minutes after the event began, several black student protesters and white allies succeeded in peacefully stalling the event. As they remained on the stage, Milo stoked the crowd by making sexually explicit, racialized remarks in reference to the black students. The mostly male, mostly white audience responded with a chant of “CPD! CPD!”

In a city wracked by police murders against unarmed black youth of color, where unarmed black people are far more likely to be gunned down by police than their white counterparts, we can infer that this cheer was not merely a call for arrest but rather a dangerous call for state violence against peaceful protesters."

This idiotic response to a lukewarm apology by the university president to the group which sponsored the event is completely over the top. The assumptions about the CPD are beyond the pale of fair comment.

Read the entire screed and decide for yourself:

Sure! OK tough guy

I've never seen or heard of CPD in DePaul building in the past. It's a new department and new bosses.
