So, anyone eager to work VRI?
- I really screwed up and want to explain what happened. I have just under 6 years on the job. I put in to work for VRI Labor Day weekend forgetting about the FOP asking us not to work. I called to cancel the day I was given (never got one before). I was told I would be suspended from the program for 6 months and a CR issued. I was told the City implemented this policy for only the Labor Day weekend. Is this for real or a scare tactic. No one from FOP called me back yet. If I end up working I plan to donate all my earnings for the day to the Chaplains Ministry.
A six month suspension for canceling with more than adequate notice? Sounds like the city is changing the rules in the middle of the game. Again.
Is there a way to grieve this so officers can get suspended for the six months, grieve it, win it as an unfair labor practice, then get paid for six months of VRI (three days per month, 18 days at time-and-one-half) for all the days you should have gotten? That would be a bit over $5,000 for not even working a single day.

Everyone should sign up then cancel. So long vri fir 6 months, sorry, everyone is suspended from the program. THAT would send a message.
All my VRI request were not met and I registered no ealier then the 7th Sept. For some reason they assigned me on Labor day when I did not sign up for it. A LT told me they may have assigned it to me without calling me because of their shortage. Still have to hear back from Special events but I better not have any issues since I did not sign up. I'd make sure no one else is in this predicament.
How could you forget that the FOP was asking people not to work that? Change of heart, maybe. Forget? I doubt it

They have everyone lined up against us. The Sun-Times news paper says the police board is getting tough on cases. Look at the past few months the Police Board has been firing officers for stupid shit. They fired a guy for slapping his girlfriend. They fired to for being drunk and disorderly in other jurisdictions. They had another guy for not registering his vehicle plates to the station or his dwelling. Another guy for taking unauthorized medicine. And many other cases. They are firing people and they aren't playing.
We must have a march on city hall again. We must be careful and not risk getting caught up in this crap.
Shiiiit. I got 17 years on the job and have not worked VRI one single time. For shits and giggles I will put in for it. I have zero activity currently so it will be interesting to see how desperate they are for that weekend. If I get it, I'll either give them an advance notice that I changed my mind, or I'll just cancel at the last minute.
Dont go. Get your cancellation #. When you are suspended for 6 months you will win all of your $$$ back after you file your grievance.
If you never got a VRI day in the past then back out and take the six month suspension for being unintelligent.
CR for what rule violation?? Call back and ask what is the allegation. For following the rules that they made about canceling? As Marsha Brady always said, "Something suddenly came up."

I'm calling BS on this whole comment. First off, unfortunately several short-sighted assholes with upwards of 25 years have put in for that weekend and gotten it, thanks Jagoffs and GFY with the"I've got bills", "others put in", etc and if you have a pet parakeet F him too in the words of Jack Savage. Secondly, as stated, it's a clear, unpublished change in policy that even Donny boy O'Neill would know would end very costly for the department. This is nothing more than some dick wad who put in for it, probably with over 20 years on, laying out his arguments for when he has to face his brothers and sisters that he screwed over whining, "I put in by accident and I heard they were going to suspend everyone so I couldn't cancel".
Hey FOP, how about borrowing that big inflatable rat several unions use at job sites and getting busloads lined up to be at some of the reporting places over the weekend so we can all see the scabs who think they're more important than us staying together? I have already heard more than a few officers say "f-ck that shit i wants my money", so i hope to god someone can print out the lists of people that work VRI or any other overtime on labor day weekend to show what scab rats that they are.. Not surprised the city would pull something like that. From the looks of it there is about 30 POs assigned for each day that weekend. If true, they all have the same problem you do.

You can be suspended from working the program for a period of time of this is your first time missing it. If they try and do anything more you will win in a grievance.
I have noticed that the weather has been getting cooler. Cold and flu season is coming. Who knows, you may catch a bug and have to hit the medical. I hope not, but you never know.

Anybody have a wedding our other event scheduled for that weekend to invite this kid to. Cancel for the invitation, take the 6 mos. and CR. then grieve as suggested earlier. If this is the first time you got VRI you probably weren't getting any days for the next 6 months anyway.
On a side note, never ever give CU in lieu of a day off for a suspension.

If you work on your day off and want to cancel its your right and no one should punish you for same .. How disgusting the way they try to fk the officers . Time and a half based on seniority was something only dreamed of 30 years ago. Now we have it and those without the time or inclination to work VRI are vilifying those who want to earn the money. We have met the enemy and it is us.

The UNION comes up with the idea not to work . They are pressuring people not to work ! There is an election and Dean , Greg , Kevin , Caps , Tommy and Ray want to be back upstairs for three more years . This is a ploy for everyone to not work to make it look like they have our backs . How come this is the first time this has happened ? I'm not working and it's my weekend off . The Union of those up there needs to be voted out ! Wake up these guys are not with us ! Call Ray if he's not away on vacation in Puerto Rico like last contract negotiations !
I also accidentally signed up not thinking and simply put in for all my RDOs for September. I will be cancelling as well and quite frankly I don't give a fuck if they suspend me for life and issue 5 CRs

I too intend to cancel but only because Im a team player, not because I'm afraid of any backlash from coppers. It's hilarious some guys will work VRI every month knowing full well the city would rather you work OT than hire new guys. No one cares the rest of the year though. With six years under your belt I'd wager to say you're a veteran of the CPD. It's a no brainer cancel cause of illness if suspended file grievance and in 6 month ur get all the money u would of earned if not suspended without Leaving the house, think of it as having a 6 month cd, they tried that on a bunch of us years ago our commander denied about 6-8 of us for working cta cause we didn't have enough activity, we filed a grievance and we all got our money for every day we put in for one guy made sgt during that time and he got paid in sgt rate. When we went in front of the arbitrator the city didn't even fight it cause they new they were wrong, plus the fop lawyers bought us lunch to celebrate, it was a win win situation, oh and that commander that denied us got dumped right after that, case ur wondering his name was velez I'm sure all the old timers remembers the mambo king such a jag. He got in trouble couple of more times after that retired as a lt after being demoted

Most of these assholes that are calling to not work it don't work it anyway. Take it a step further and include on your scab list all these whiners that will work their fucking security side job over the weekend. Give some money out of your pockets too. I'm a sergeant and I worked VRI North this weekend and only had 2 CARS, 4 P.O.s working in #010! And I wasn't the only one, nobody had more than 3 cars! I thought I had the wrong date for the boycott! If you are cancelling now, which is 10 days before Labor Day weekend, they should give you the cancellation number and keep moving, otherwise notate the date and time and who you talked to for when you file the grievance! You can't just make up this shit as you go along. I cancelled a day at the end of July, I called 3 days before and I was good!

Wtf? You logged on and actually counted this? You really need to get a life. Hobby would be a start. Make some friends... meet someone of the opposite or same sex. Working out is always good for you. A real plan of action , Zero work anymore VRI until the pension is fully funded as legally stated.
What can or can't the union do to the scabs? What they should do, is kick the scabs out of the Union for four months, no Union protection, and let the scabs realize how valuable Union protection is. There has to be consequences otherwise no one will listen. The city has a lot of uneducated and unintelligent city workers so the Union needs to start pushing their weight around with the members. It will only benefit everyone.

What is not working vri doing for us? Think.
Guys, start taking clear pictures of the VRI and other volunteer overtime gigs that the union told us not to work. Email them to SSC under the contribution tab, the email is anonymous. Time for these scabs to squirm f****** punks. Make sure you talk to everyone you work with in your district to point out who the scabs are that work in your district. Use black magic marker and write SCAB on their lockers. Do whatever it takes to let it be known that these punks are costing us money and benefits for our family in the long run.
I will cancel Vri if angelo shows us that pay cut he promised when he was running for fop.. Thought not. Scumbag... In fact per the news letter there is a pay bump.
