More Taxes

Prickwrinkle has to be glad for Hillary's election debacle because it provided cover for this:
  • Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle personally ensured her controversial new penny-an-ounce pop tax passed Thursday by breaking a rare tie vote among commissioners.

The two-term board president stepped further into the glare of a spotlight because she's counting on the $224 million a year the beverage tax is expected to bring in to balance the books for a while.
Prickwrinkle doesn't seem to have gleaned any lessons from the mobility of the tax base. When Chicago enacted a dime on every bottle of water, people stopped buying water in Chicago. Suburban grocery stores and shopping clubs had to bring in water by the truckload to keep up with demand. We don't think Shortshanks reaped even half of the revenue projections his bean counters said would be generated.

We predict a similar situation with the County. Especially when we read this:
  • It won't apply to drinks bought with a Link card issued to families in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program because additional consumer taxes can't be added under the federal program.
Imagine that.

We also heard that this tax was levied for "health related" reasons. How much of the tax is going to "health related" programs? We're betting zero. And it says they're taxing iced tea drinks - what if the tea has no sugar? Diet sodas? Zero calorie sodas?

We're lucky enough to live close to a border where they don't tax the shit out of their citizens. Hopefully you do to.

Worth noting is the fact that former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg intervened and ran ads in support of raising the tax on soft drinks in Cook County.

Preckwinkle owns this tax hike.

ALL those with LINK Cards, report to all the new "Working Places" where now you can "earn that Entitlement".

I want to see a program like that set up in Chicago (as well as nationwide).

Link Cards should ONLY be handed out at "Working Places" on a monthly basis - I hope that's Executive Order Number 2017-0001

Now there's something they can protest about.

It won't apply to people in the SNAP program. That's fine -- but if it is for supplemental nutrition, and sugary drinks have next to no nutritional value, why does the link card cover sugary drinks at all?????? Maybe Prickwinkle can answer that question

Bensenville, here I come! And I don't care if it costs me more in gas than the tax would. Not paying the tax, sorry.

How I Spent my Summer Vacation - Avoiding Illinois, Cook County & Chicago Taxes

I bought family groceries out of the county whenever possible.

I bought gas outside the county every chance I could.

I took the family to Florida, where we had a hotel room, rented a car and went to Disney World, completely avoiding various Chicago & Cook County amusement taxes, etc. Sure, I had to pay Florida taxes, but they're much lower than what the crooks are getting here.

I bought all water and pop outside Cook county.

I took the kids shooting, buying all ammunition out of state.

I bought as many goods a possible via internet dealers that don't collect Illinois/Cook County/Chicago taxes.

My search continues to find new and innovative ways to deny as much of my income from these thieves as possible.

How'd I do?

Anyone with any other ideas?

Should'nt the outstanding recipients of the LINK card only be allowed to purchase bottled water, fruit juice or milk with the privilege? Only foods/liquids shown in the government food triangle should be allowed for 'free' LINK purchase. Anything outside the triangle - like sugary pop, iced tea, grape soda - should be purchased with your out-of-pocket money. Why should the people of Cook County who stay healthy by limiting their liquid intake to coffee, tea, milk, yogurt, orange juice, tomato juice, bottled water, be penalized for the slobs who will feed their children a liter of 7-UP for breakfast?

Then I go to Gander Mountain and see what's on sale in the ammunition department. I refuse to pay the outrageous taxes in Illinois/Chicago/Cook County.I even bought a car up there. 2. taxed on the over priced home

Tax should be based on lot size , not price
we all receive the same service from streets and sanitation garbage pick up , which we now pay for , thank you tutu
street cleaning , snow removal , street lights , fire protection etc
Police Patrol that is when the high real estate tax payers receive the short end , very few beat cars in civilized neighborhoods , the criminals receive two to three times for police on patrol , calls for service , probably 10 times more in the ghetto , calls for CFD Ambulance in the high real estate tax area for emergency only , ghetto scraped knees , mental cases , and of course the domestic battery victim and gun shot victims
not fair is it , keep voting these thieves in office

Also note, the media bootlickers never bother to follow up on any of her grand ideas to raise revenue. Two years ago she put that $25 surcharge on all county gun sales, claiming it would raise millions for gun violence. All it did was handicap the handful of remaining gun stores in the county and drive sales across to the collar counties. And exactly how much revenue has it produced? We'll never hear how much the new sugar tax raises or how many retailers have been hurt by lower sales.

Preckwinkle should start by cutting the patronage in the county and bringing salary and benefits into line with the private sector. Many county workers are not qualified for their job descriptions, are paid 35% more then their private sector counterparts, and many do not even work in their job titles and job descriptions, That is where most of the tax money goes. The county had a study done of this a few years ago but never released the study. And, as a lot of people know, Preckwinkle is not a friend of the police or of white people.

I started bringing my own sports bottle filled with water into restaurants, it is better for me and avoids both the tax and insane cost of a beverage. If enough people were to do that in protest then I suspect that the Crooks at the county would need to look for another tax (Oxygen tax anyone?).
The actual cost to a restaurant for one of those sugary drinks is under 25 cents - so this tax is going to really hurt Cook County restaurants (and the people who earn their living at them).

Chicago and crook county is the worst run place in America and it's examples like this that got us that way. Of course they say it's for "health" just like red light and speed cameras are for safety. All one big lie.

Jobs + Growth / Article
November 2, 2016

The state’s high-tax burden is not only hurting struggling taxpayers’ pockets, but is also depreciating home values across Illinois.

A new study found that Illinois homes purchased in 2008, right before the housing-market recession, still have not gained back their pre-recession value. In fact, Illinois is one of only seven states where this is the case. And one reason home values are struggling to increase is because of high property taxes. As property taxes increase, the cost of homeownership also increases, which means taxpayers are able to put less money toward paying for their homes, and homes don’t appreciate strongly. Sometimes high property taxes cause home values to go down because homebuyers do not want to pay a high price on a mortgage if the property taxes are also high. Illinois is taxing the value out of its homes.

This is bad news for Illinois homeowners paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation. Not only are high property taxes a heavy burden on taxpayers, but they also deter other potential homebuyers from buying property in Illinois. Because of this, many Illinois homeowners are struggling to sell their homes, and are stuck paying a high property tax bill in the meantime.

Many Illinoisans also cite high taxes as the reason they want to move out of the state. This is no surprise considering that – in addition to having the highest property taxes in the nation – property taxes in Illinois are also growing 3.3 times faster than median household incomes.

Put a good "RO" -- reverse osmosis -- unit under your sink and make your own "water." That's all most of this stuff is -- treated from the municipal supply and bottled. Best few hundred you'll ever spend, and pays for itself in no time.

Save your back lugging those flats, save the money, fuel, time, unnecessary handling and transport of a commodity that's already right at your elbow. Huge sucker game.

I'll add a periodic shopping trip out of the county on my to do list. These ever greedy Cook County pols won't see a dime from me. Don't buy Pepsi when you stock up, the CEO said some negative BS about President Elect Trump.

President Elect Trump, love the sound of it. I feel like a kid who got everything they wanted for Christmas: Republican President and Congress, and liberals having histrionics.

The downside is that you have to deal with the unhinged protestors. Praying for your safety.

Bensenville, here I come! And I don't care if it costs me more in gas than the tax would. Not paying the tax, sorry.

11/14/2016 12:29:00 AM

If you locate a good place to pick up pop in Bensenville, let us know. I couldn't find any shopping areas out there. May I suggest the Target in Villa Park. It's about 5 blocks west of the county line on North Avenue.

ohboy, PrickWrinkle best be changing that tax from 1c an OZ to $1 an OZ as the Tiny Dancer, hisownself, has grandstandingly doubled down on "Sanctuary City" on news all over the place today...sure hope Mr T cuts off ALL federal aid to ALL "sanctuary cities" 1st week of his admin

BTW - as all you Chicongoans know well, DOUBLING DOWN is a classic political tactic laid out by Chicongo's Favorite Son: Saul Alinsky...

DOUBLING DOWN has worked beautifully for the social fascist democrat party for decades but The Tiny Ballerino obviously didn't bother to ask hisownself himself if it would still work

Say buh-bye to gillions of them there sweet federal dollars...the hood-ratz is gonna be pissed when they figure out (if they ever figure it out) that them there Meskin illegals cost'em each & every one, several pairs of self-esteem Nikes & bags full of McD's burgers....ohboy.Where's Jesse Jaxsin when his peeplz need'em? Oh, never mind, he's out blowing Meskins...How was it Jassie? Purdee Good? he's well known as Senor Chorizo-Chomperado

Let me get this straight. For sugary drinks purchased with a LINK card, the tax will not apply. Yet this tax exists out of concerns for the health of the consumer. Soooooo it looks like Preckwinkle doesn't care if the poor citizens of Cook County are continuously exposed to these dangerous sugary drinks. She wants to protect the wealthy from the dangers these drinks expose us too. But she doesn't care about the health of the under-privileged and their children. Shame on you, Preckwinkle. You're supposed to be a champion of the under-served, yet you're going to poison them with sugar. What about the obesity rates among young black children??? Don't you care?

I wish you were right, but you're not. Cook County goes as far south as Devon Ave. on York Road. Des Plaines is completely within Cook County.

Next place to check is Elk Grove Village, parts of which are in DuPage. Check Google Maps Cook County.

11/14/2016 09:43:00 AM

I had a call from a polling firm that I'd bet was GOP due to the questions posed and my being a registered Republican. One of the questions asked was would you still support us if we allowed a path to citizenship for illegal aliens residing in the US?

I have a hunch that Trump will go after the criminal aliens only.

Does anyone know if the tax the jag county commissioners just enacted will apply to things like orange and grape juice? How about prune juice that I take for medicinal reasons. They all have sugar added.
11/14/2016 11:35:00 AM

No tax on 100% juice drinks. But even 10% water in that juice puts it on the taxable list.

Why are Link card recipients allowed to buy GMO corn syrup bubble water with taxpayer funds anyways?

Issue them a ration book that covers produce, protein and basic carbs and send 'em home.

Beggars can't be choosers, and there is nothing in the Constitution that affords everybody the right to Twinkies and Coke (to say nothing of the steaks and other luxury items they buy on our dime).

Why does the Link program even allow the person to buy sodo, potato chips, fried food, and other poor health items? If Prickwrinkle and Bloomboig are so concerned, restrict Link purchases to healthy foods. No grape pop, Cheetos, and pork rinds.
And how much money has the anti violence tax on guns and ammo generated? Inquiring tax payers want to know, John Daley, since you push these goofy tax proposals to the other dumber county board members. How do we vote Daley out and get a real commissioner in? Wake up Republicans and reclaim Crook County like Ogilvie and O'Malley did several years ago. It can be done!

LINK and any tax payer subsidized form of assistance should be for essentials. Milk, veggies, fruits, toiletries, and chicken. That is it! It is a assistance program, meaning to assist you, not support you. You want pop, flaming hot cheetos, and ice cream, use your paycheck.

Speaking of sweetened drinks...

We all love our Dunkin' Donuts, or at least that's the stereotype. The makers of the artificial sweetener Splenda is suing DD because they have started using a knock-off Chinese made sweetener in a similar yellow packet.

Yeeech... I avoid buying even Chinese food made in China and I look at labels in the store. The bar code number that start at 690 - 695 are all MADE IN CHINA. 471 is Made in Taiwan.

But I take my coffee with double cream.
I suppose they will double tax that next.

People on link don't need to be drinking soda pop. It's bad for them too. Should we believe that their bodies can digest carbonated high fructose corn syrup better than hard working tax paying citizens ( don't answer that lol). If Preckwinkle is so interested in "the people's " health. Maybe she should look into limiting what LINK users purchase at the local corner store Grocery Imporium. How about hot chips, Cheetos? Pig skins? greasy fried foods ? Why would someone so interested in people's health think it's ok for the Black community to consume that stuff?

Gee.... Ma'am you sure aren't looking for another way to screw the tax payers out of more money while you give a pass to the entitled and caters to ones who are a heavy block of your voter base are ya?

Also, all because the democrats got greedy & implemented this tax, you force people out of spite to buy their pop out of the county. Well, it doesn't end there with the pop. Now you might as well buy everything on your trip out. Alcohol, gas, cigarettes, water, and the rest of your food.& groceries. You lose greedy democrats. Now you get nothing on a lot. Had you just kept things as is, I'd still shop in Chicago.

A windfall for collar county business where no doubt many angry cook county voters will head to do their shopping. These socialists will never learn, you can't keep bleeding the working, taxpaying guy. Only reason they are full speed ahead with their policies is because minority voting ensures their re election. Well, after Trump drains the swamp of illegals, there goes a big part of the democratic voting bloc. Also, screw you little Louis Gutierrrrrrrrrez and Rahm, your sanctuary city, and federal funds are going bye bye. Si se puede!

Stupid democrats, must have been sleeping in economics class when the law of diminishing returns was explained.
Raise taxes all you want on food, gas, whatever. I do all my shopping up in Lake County. Just got loads of groceries, and filled up the gas tank with $1.89 a gallon gas. Cook county will not see a red cent of my food and gas tax. Suck it.
