- A veteran Chicago police detective has been relieved of police powers after she was charged with misdemeanor theft for trying to take about $200 worth of vitamins from a Lake View grocery on Friday afternoon, according to police and law enforcement sources.
Law enforcement sources identified the female detective as [CH], a 12-year-veteran, who was arrested about 2 p.m. Friday after allegedly stealing the vitamins from the Whole Foods at 3300 N. Ashland Ave., the sources said.
At the time, there was no DOJ report outlining disparate disciplinary outcomes for connected people who managed to evade consequences for their illegal actions. Reading over the comments, people were sure she'd be fired.

The deputy spoke with store security and learned that [H] was seen placing reading glasses into a book sack she was carrying. [H] was released on a summons to appear in court on March 8, 2017.
Any bets if she keeps her job this time with that DOJ report floating around? Special Ed and Rahm made all sorts of appropriately conciliatory noises for the media. What kind of noises are they going to make about the two-and-three tiers of discipline the Department operates under?

WTF, when are they going to get rid of her. I sure would hate to be in a house when she catches a case and then steals everything in site. Cmon Eddie, do the right thing, we can't. If two people receive a no time SPAR for an escape, the discipline is non uniform in the dept. U cant watch your arrestee and he/she walks out u shoukd take a substantial suspension. Race or gende shoukdnt factor into discipline

Carie A. Hooker, a police officer for 11 years, was stopped shortly after 5 p.m. Monday when she tried to leave the Kohl's store, 9700 S. Ridgeland Ave., with about $100 in women's clothing, Chicago Ridge police said.
Store security called Chicago Ridge police, and Hooker was cooperative when they arrived, Chief Tim Baldermann said.
She was charged with misdemeanor retail theft.
Hooker was assigned to the Chicago Alternative Police Strategies office. She has been stripped of her badge and gun pending the outcome of the case, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

I rarely speak ill of a fellow officer but, she needs to go home to New Orleans. The girl has serious issues. She has been a problem since day one. A medical roll abuser as well. Whomever it is that has been protecting her should move with her.
The way that directive is worded "$1,000 OR 10 prior felonies" , makes it sound like
you could steal $900 worth thousands of times and still be clean as a whistle.
All previous encounters were misdemeanors. Am I reading it wrong?

I know this detective and she is a good person who tries to help others when she can. However, if this is a pattern, she may have an illness. Kleptomania is a diagnosable medical mental illness. It is an addiction but is stigmatized and not held equally like alchoholism or other illnesses like depression. People don't understand that people with this illness are not criminals, but are sick and need help. If she indeed did do these things (like, really, a simple pair of reading glasses?) she is not doing it for profit or to be a thief.
It would be good if we didn't demonize, villify or try to hurt our own when they are down. We would help an alchoholic brother who got a DUI by getting him treatment. For a person with a compulsive disorder addiction, they are forced to lie and not get the actual help that they need, because the department and fellow officers don't understand that these people need help too, just like other addictions.
Instead, being mean and judgemental are the orders of the day.
C'mon guys, have some adult feelings and step up and help your brothers instead of trying to drag them down further in time of need, no matter what your personal feelings.
Also, it is possible that she did not intend to steal anything at all- YES THIS IS A POSSIBILITY. I hope that she is not sick, but if she is, I hope she gets better. She will have paid a very large price already without our help.

Point taken. Then don't charge her criminally, but remove her from the job. Just because she may or may not suffer from a disease does not allow her to continue in this profession. Her illness obviously doesn't allow her to meet the standards that should be necessary to be a police officer.
