Help Wanted - Airport

  • Four of Chicago’s top airport security jobs are now vacant — a void that raises even more questions about the state of security at O’Hare and Midway airports.

The high-level vacancies include Jeff Redding, who was fired last week; two deputies who’d been working under him; and the managing deputy commissioner of security who was supposed to be Redding’s boss, City Hall sources said Monday.

Aviation Commissioner Ginger Evans has told associates the vacancies are hampering her ability to investigate the April 9 passenger-dragging incident involving Dr. David Dao. She has also complained that, in some cases, the salaries for the jobs are too low to lure top talent away from other major airports.
Why would you "lure top talent" from other major airports? Don't we have any talent here? Isn't O'Hare one of the busiest airports in the nation and world? Shouldn't this be where "top talent" comes from?

Is Chicago that corrupt that there is no "career path" for talent to learn, advance, promote and run airport security? That's like bringing in outsiders from the FBI and NYPD to run the second largest police department in the nation....

Not a cop but when I read that, it made me sick, literally. Just another example of what is wrong with Chicago. Ginger Evans has come from another city, makes over 300k plus benefits and pension. But when this shit broke, none of it fell on her. Zero. But she is in charge. Interesting. Now there are four slots and she refuses to hire anyone from Chicago for the gigs? The salaries are too low? There must be cops who would jump at the chance to lead that department for that pay. Wow. What a rude statement. Will your new union boss speak up now? Will any politician fight for the citizens?

It appears talent won't get you anywhere without "connections". And why would anyone talented enough to perform the job want to move to a liberal democrat crime infested city more intent on protecting criminals than protecting law abiding, tax paying citizens? Not everyone wants to be someone else's lackey.

"Luring top talent" - the excuse used by Dumbocrat Scheisters to justify ultra-high salaries for teachers, school administrators, superintendents, etc. All that "luring top talent" nonsense does is to jack up salaries and benefits and cost the taxpayers billions.

That kind of crap ought to be illegal. Cap the salaries with reasonable adjustments every 5 years depending on how the economy is going. It's only going to take one State to "lead" in doing this, and the rest will follow.

Right now there's some school superintendents on the North Shore that make $260K/yr, gym teachers making $160K/yr, school principals making $175K/yr, and the average teacher salary? $100K/yr. It's insane.

I can only imagine the scheisterism taking place at O'Hare among the fat envelope crew.

"Top Talent" here in Chicago? yes, in some cases. But, with a system of corrupt patronage and crony politics, you cannot count on that. A person who is a merit promotee will be sent to the best management schools and management training programs around the country. So, when they retire their resume looks great. But, where this falls down is in performance in other areas of the country, other areas that really demand good performance, leadership and fresh ideas, things that have been in short supply in this town. And, it seems the best of other areas do not want to come to Chicago, the king of crony politics and patronage. And, under former Gov Quinn, Illinois ranked right up their for cronyism, according to the recent Tribune article on the Department of Transportation. It is time that the legislators make patronage a criminal offense as it is in many other states. Make it illegal for Madigan to call a department with a " job recommendation" which actually means " you better hire my guy".

They know nothing about policing and couldn't care less about policing. Their agenda is to have a good paying job and not have to work for it. It's gimme a job just because.

CPD is loaded with incompetents and is sinking because it is so top heavy with them. Does any sane person think Eddie Johnson is qualified or competent? Barbara West? Etc. The list is long. You name em.

The arcane world of The Ecomonic Engine known as Ohare,International Airport.
It all has to do with "What's in a Name" game at Ohare.

Let's see;
Redding was a (1) Deputy Commissioner, of Security.
His unknown/unnamed supervisor was a (2) Managing Commissioner, of Security.
That leads to someone over the Manging Commissioner, like a (3) Deputy Managing Commissioner.
Then there's the top boss probably called the (4) Commissioner of Aviation Security.
Could there be an Assistant Managing Commissioner, an Assistant Deputy Supervising Manager, a Operations Deputy Commissioner, an Assistant to the Deputy Commissioners Assistant Manager ????
That's the basic idea, not necessarily correct but there's so many multiple levels of "Deputy Commissioners" appointments that are mystery spots. Very inflated +$100k Upper Managing Staff.
You won't find a Ohare executive position listed on Carreer Builder, Monster or Snag A Job.

There are 4 vacant positions that probably is worth upwards $500,000 per annum, plus benefits.
If you're lucky enough to have an elected friend at City Hall you're qualified.
Judging from who they hired for Commisioner positions, it's likely the pool of connected applicants are of less standard than those terminated.

Yes, Ohare makes a lot of money...they have to, who's going to pay for all those political commissioner hacks.

The only "talent" required, is the willingness to lay down where ever--- so the bus has a clean line of sight to completely run you up under it.... same thing is required for any top jobs for the city of chi--- skills, brains, brawn, or testicles are not required. These Aviation Police/Security sound like they could utilize the expert supervision of the Legendary 020 district 2nd watch crew of Supervisors. If these "Expert Supervisors" were to be detailed to O'Hare to supervise the Aviation Security personnel, all the Aviation cops would quit within a few days.

These Expert Supervisors on 2nd watch in 020 are simply the worse in the city that I have ever run across in my 25 years on CPD. I have worked in numerous districts, specialized units and have never witnessed such in fighting amongst supervisors anywhere. The most miserable sergeant that I have ever had the displeasure to be supervised by has to be Sgt RS.

Kevin Zator can do the job, which is more than I can say for Ginger Evans. He's a pragmatic and disciplined supervisor, thinks before he speaks, and has the respect of the majority of the rank and file officers. He's worked closely with other higher ups in the department and was well respected by supervision on the security team who retired in the past couple of years.

I don't understand why he got passed over the last time they filled the position. He should have been the first name on the short list to step up. Two supervisors he answered to retired, he was running the day to day operation for all intents and purposes. So why was Jeff Redding given the job over someone who had already proven himself?

The city should try promoting from within for a change, it's pretty obvious that their last pick, chosen from outside, didn't work out. I have no doubt that Kevin Zator could have fielded the questions at the hearings downtown far more effectively. He's been working in the trenches for years, likes what he's doing, is very dedicated to the airport and the operation, and has the requisite training for the position.

Promote from within.
