Ambushed in Indiana

Responding to a roll-over accident, your primary focus is usually assisting the injured:
  • An Indiana volunteer police lieutenant responding to a traffic accident was gunned down Thursday by one of the injured occupants of an overturned car, officials said.

The officer was identified as Lt. Aaron Allan, 38, a six-year veteran of the Southport Police Department who had 20 years of law enforcement experience. Allan was the department's officer of the year in 2015 and was known by his nickname, "Teddy Bear," The Washington Post reported.

[...] Jason Brown, 28, was one of two suspects taken into custody in the shooting and is facing a preliminary murder charge, according to a police report obtained by FOX59. Though a motive was not immediately disclosed, Hendricks County court records reviewed by The Indianapolis Star showed Brown had been convicted of misdemeanor marijuana possession in 2014 and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. The Indianapolis native, who remained hospitalized Friday in good condition, also had been issued three traffic tickets in Marion County and another in Greene County since 2009.
The assailant was shot by other officers but survived. But it is truly a sad day when officers are responding to what looks like a traffic accident to assist injured people and end up in a gun fight. RIP Officer.

You don't know how many occupants and
what type of contraband they were holding.
Cops are not shot responding to an accident
scene unless someone was riding dirty.

This comment may have been true 10 years ago but that is not the case now. A CFD engine was hit by gun fire this week after someone showed up at the scene of an accident and started blasting away. Keep your heads on a swivel!

Lovingly yours,

To give yourself any kind of chance in these surprise ambushes you need to have your gun in hand.... but our new COPA will want to jam you up for having your gun in your hand without meeting all sorts of ridiculous criteria.

Or unless someone's insane.
Or unless someone's high.
Or unless someone's not inclined to go back to prison.
Or... or.... unless someone really wants to kill one of us today.

Cops are shot for reasons no one can fathom. And it's getting much worse each and every day.

According to the new use of force, it states that if the offender shoots an officer and still has the gun in his hand, but isn't pointing it at anyone you cannot shoot because there's no immediate threat of death or great bodily harm. I really do think they want us dead.

Where is the public outrage on this? Where are the marchers and protestors?
The silent majority needs to wake up and destroy the beast once and for all.

Condolences to the public because they lost the most! Another shining star!
The family will survive on the strength of this Lieutenant and the values he lived by and the example he set!

Inbred trailer-trash obviously on drugs did this. I wish The Move To Indy Guy would chime in on this BS! I hope Indiana applies The Death Penalty on this one!

Crackheads driving unlicensed and uninsured, all the while geeked up on whatever the Democrats legalize and refuse to impose jail time for possessing or using. Crazed maniacal state of mind animals and their first impulse is to shoot at the Police - like they've been taught to do when confronted and cornered.
And they want Police to utilize Narcan to resuscitate these chronic dopers?

Very few po's approach an accident scene with their gun in their hand. If any, just can't be done. Think about it, your wife or kid gets in an accident and the police approach with guns drawn. Will never happen

You are correct. There are inherent dangers when you become a police officer. All the training can't prepare you for this and some tragedies can't be avoided

thanks for this. Yes, the average citizen considers it wrong for a cop to approach a vehicle on a traffic stop with his/ her gun drawn.

you are 100% correct

you would need video game reflexes to adhere to these ridiculous standards put forth by the ignorant

"Yes, the average citizen considers it wrong for a cop to approach a vehicle on a traffic stop with his/ her gun drawn."

Made thousands of stops and when I felt it was warranted, approached the vehicle with my weapon drawn hidden behind my upper thigh
It helped that I was a left handed shooter,. Just don't broadcast it to the occupants of the vehicle and nobody will be the wiser.
Any backup weapon can be easily concealed on approach as well. Nothing says you can't approach the passenger side. Troopers do it continually on the Interstate as a safety issue, so they're not in traffic. Note never got one beef for having my weapon drawn.
Focus on being more Tactical and less like Tackleberry

He crawled into the car to help the driver who was hanging upside down in his seat
belt. The guy had weed in the car, with previous convictions, and must have figured he was going down. http://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2017/07/31/documents-suspect-fired-15-shots-southport-officer/525852001/

This pose should look familiar to most CPD officers, thug in his normal habitat. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4742176/Indiana-cop-shooter-suspect-identified-Jason-Brown.html
