Isn't it far past time for a "three strikes" law, not to mention a "truth in sentencing" law?
- A repeat felon with a decades-long rap sheet was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder of a police officer in the fatal shooting of Cmdr. Paul Bauer.
Shomari Legghette, 44, is also charged with aggravated use of a weapon by a felon and drug possession, officials say.

Legghette’s adult criminal record includes convictions for armed robbery, resisting a correctional officer and felony drug possession.
In 1998, he robbed a Forest Park couple in their driveway. Legghette claimed he was urinating when an acquaintance nicknamed “Trouble” pointed a pistol at a man in his car and ordered his wife to turn over her valuables.
Legghette was arrested after getting away in a car and running from police. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the holdup, according to documents in his unsuccessful appeal.
More recently, Legghette was charged in 2014 with selling heroin to a man. Five baggies of the drug and $138 were found on him. He was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison.
That's quite a criminal history there. And it didn't stop him from getting another gun. Why is that do you suppose?

- Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx stressed the weight of the charges against Legghette.
“There is no more serious offense than the killing of a police officer in the line of duty,” she said.
The single biggest hurdle to getting repeat felons charged and keeping them in prison for the sentences imposed by State Law is the Cook County States Attorney's office. And to have her up there spouting off about "serious offense[s]" is an insult to crime victims across the County.

Time to publicly shun this "state's attorney" whose actions repeatedly demonstrate her refusal to enforce the laws that she swore to uphold. Especially repeat felons possessing/using firearms. The public needs to know that her egregious actions and policies have rendered our streets more dangerous than theaters of war where our troops are deployed. "Restorative Justice" and "Peace Circles" have no place in our criminal justice system when dealing with violent repeat offenders.
And the IL DOC must stop releasing these predators early which former Gov. Quinn and now Gov. Rauner supported as a budgetary policy instead of following the court's sentence.

Why isn’t this piece of shot being charged with 7 counts of 1st degree murder. 1 count for each bullet. It’s good enough to charge JVD on 16 counts of 1st degree murder then it should be good enough. For this scum bag piece of shit that Foxx, Dart, Evan and Preckwinke have a hand in.

When a fireman responds to a fire he wears all his gear into a fire. Not just his coat.
If a fireman is not wearing full FULL PROTECTIVE GEAR into a fire he is subject to reprimand.
Supervisors/peers would object to ignorance towards personal safety and becoming and additional issue to be dealt with.
The police officer responds to all calls w/ the same training. No full PROTECTIVE gear for armed or suspected offenders who are suspected to be armed. Why are sop's written "where there is smoke you will don scba?" But for the police officer you will wear the same shit no matter wth you are dealing with. Fireman wear a hazardous materaial suit for protection from the ultimate exposure of danger. The police officer will be subjected to wear the same shit for the call Johnny doesnt want to go to school and "we just recieved multiple calls for a person with a gun and shots fired". Fireman gear up fully for every call. Why is that.... is it because you never know wth you have until you are there. Is it sanctity of life?
What is full PROTECTIVE gear for a police officer? A bullet proof vest? Why is my chest protected, but not my head? What realm is any logic gather from "you will protect your chest but not your head".

A fire man can put on fully PROTECTIVE gear on in 30 seconds... Why are police officers not allowed this time to be fully protected? I want my life to be protected, must I risk it all? Can I not be afforded 30 seconds by my employer to fully protect myself?
The police officer is only given basic training at the start of his career and comical continue education throughout his career. More or less lawsuit training... we were sued; the court decided he should not have responded this way, now you need to know not to do this or you will lose.
People always have to die for changes... we always change to prevent another loss. WE should be allowed to protect our life. If one person is saved by protecting the sanctity of life through the use of full ballistic protection, we have to agree on success.

For those employed and engaged in the enforcement of law to continue to choose to do, (in enforcing said law), what has been always done, is perilously close to that definition of insanity.

I read the post, Officer shot, updates, where the poster related that Cook Co Board President Toni Preckwinkle was at the morgue during the time of the arrival of Commander Bauer's body. I was incensed that CPD officers were shaking hands with her, the poster turned his back to her though. I can remember line of duty deaths from years ago where the politicans and exempts went to the head of the line at the wakes and them being given all the front seats in the churches at the expense of the deceased officer's partners, coworkers and friends. I hope who ever is putting this detail together does not make this mistake. If these politicians want to come to these services they should have wait like everyone else. They should be put at the back of the church. And don't shake hands with them or engage them, they are there to be seen. Remember many of them have sustained the anti police rhetoric and the far left liberal view of not incarcerating criminals.

Here’s another fact about this devastating tragedy; besides the obviously broken judicial system we have here in Cook County, the beloved Commander’s death is the direct result of the powers that be turning a blind eye on the drug addicts, thieves and degenerates that occupy Lower Wacker Drive. The brass of this department had been made aware of the drug dealing that goes on down there years ago but chose to ignore it so as not to upset the liberal agenda that attempts to protect this disgusting element of society. The POS that shot the Commander was not wearing a bullet proof vest and carrying a 40 cal gun with a 30 round mag because he was afraid of the police but because of the ongoing drug turf war on Lower Wacker. Yes, that’s where the original confrontation occurred with this animal before he bolted, ran up the stairs and eventually encountered the Commander. The truth is that the powers that be knew the drug turf war was escalating on Lower Wacker because of a shooting down there that happened earlier in the month. It was only after this shooting that a feeble attempt was made to stop the violence and dealing by putting a one car fixed post in place. One car to watch miles of homeless encampments filled with the very customers that the dealers were trying to kill each other for. Probably not so coincidental is the fact that the caliber of the gun that was used to shoot Commander Bauer was the same caliber of the shell casings found at the earlier Lower Wacker shooting. The responsibility for this wonderful man’s death lies with many.

For those not familiar with what I'm talking about. If you are convicted of 2 class 2 felonys your third class 2 felony or greater makes you eligible for a 6-30 year sentence. This is Illinois super weak 3 strikes rule.

To the simpleton who posted police should don their gear as quickly as a fireman. A fireman can choose not to enter a building based on general structural knowledge vs. Fire/smoke observed and for safety of their own lives. A fireman usually has gear being put on on the way to the fire and their gear is readily available on the rig, etc...
A policeman usually has to have his gear secured at all times(trunk) a policeman usually does not have the luxury to assess a situation and choose not to engage for fear of their own safety because it's the safety to others lives that we are sworn to protect (i joined to protect the innocent 9-11 always remember) AND most importantly, it is (potentially) that our brothers and sisters are the ones that we are rushing to help, etc. . .

Let’s be completely honest. Only a few Citizens are outraged. Many others celebrate, laugh, and mock the police. Take a look at any comment sections of mainstream left wing websites. These comment sections are not even anonymous. Many use Facebook. And if you dismiss their comments as just coming from an minority on the left, understand that 50# of this country is left. Therefore there is the potential for millions in this country to not give a flying fuck about the police. Add in some on the right, and the number is even more staggering.
Liberals, don’t even say otherwise, you know it’s true. You will even go so far as to prevent us from wearing equipment that WILL help protect us simply because you don’t like the way it looks because in your mind it is “military like”.
I see MRE made an in-person condolence visit to his family at their home on Tuesday night. This was done privately and without fanfare or media coverage. This is entirely appropriate and what he should have done. I wonder why he then felt the need to make a second in-person condolence visit the following day when the media was there?

I'm working in City Hall and am saddened by the shooting of the Commander and angered at the political mess that is not addressing public safety and policing adequately. I'm also greatly dismayed at the politicians using this as a PR opportunity. There is currently a memorial to Commander Bauer in City Hall's main hallway. It's there to allow people to pay their respects and sign a memorial book. Anyhow, what really got my attention is that there isn't an honor guard detailed to it. I know it's not a viewing, but I'd think there would be at least a couple officers in dress uniform watching over it. That's just something that struck me.

Her blatant pandering during this tragic afternoon is repulsive. Her mantras of "hyper policing" and "too many black and brown youths incarcerated" have contributed to the anti police rhetoric which the media gleefully covers.
It was disgusting to see Ch. 5 trot out Carol Marin whose extolling Cmdr. Bauer's virtues have been negated by her continual reference to the McDonald shooting, right down to a self promoting commercial covering her Peabody Award. Your words of praise are meaningless when it was your venomous Legend of Laquan that started the media lynching of the CPD.
Finally, the actions of our weasel mayor have far outweighed his insincere words of sympathy. Promising to hire 1,000 officers, calling Sergeants who have raised concern over the Lie-tenants exam "sour grapes," closing three patrol districts and two detective areas demonstrate that actions speak louder than words.
The posting of Thank You CPD signage at the Thompson Center, the blue ribbons on trees, the makeshift memorials outside of the 18th District & the crime scene will hopefully remind Cmdr. Bauer's family that our decent citizens will not forget his valiant actions. Let's hope that these good citizens remember to vote political hucksters such as Preckwinkle, Foxx, Emmanuel, Dart, and chief judge Evans out of office.

I noticed in the media footage of Legghett-that it was SHERIFF personnel surrounding and escorting the in custody Legghette, also removing Legghette’s vest as he was about to be stuffed into the CPD unmarked car.
(The SHERIFF wording was clear on the back side of the deputies dark blue uniform vests)

I'm talking about him to my coworkers, neighbors, cab drivers... I don't want the regular citizen to quickly move on or forget what he did and what you all do on a daily basis to keep this city safe.

Bond should be based purely on the threat to society that an arrestee poses, nothing more. I don't care if an armed robber is indigent, he is a threat to society and should remain in custody until his trial. The Cook County criminal justice system is broken, and in it's current state it's a joke. Get rid of the Democrats who got us in this mess in the first place. If that is true, you need to learn to negotiate your subscription rate. I hate to admit that I too, pay for the trib. but it also gives me access to the comment board. However, I pay $47 and change for my three month subscription and have been doing so for years, simply by going up their Philippine chain of command and get it extended six moths at a time and then do it again the next time they say they are going to change my rate.

I cried for this man and his family. That little girl should have her father. RIP great Sir. I love this city, but man this is hard. Im 36 born and raised from "wicker park" but back in the day it was just Milwaukee/division and ashland. I've seen this area go through lots of changes...ups and downs. I just want to say that I have so much respect and afmoration for all of you in uniform. I have so many good memories of beat cops walking around my neighborhood when I was little. They were always so involved ready to stop and chat but ready to to take care of business. I can't ever forget this one police woman..a tough blond with her hair in a long ponytail. She got in a scuffle with a man as he waa arrested and placed in the paddywagon. I remember him started to kick her and just manhandle her but she held her own. I don't remember where her partner was but she did eventually get help. She was bleeding and alot of her blonde hair was turned red. I always think about her. It had to be almost 30 years ago.
I also remember one young cop years later when I was in my 20s. My bf (now husband) just dropped me off and we noticed a suspicious person hanging out around the low balcony of the condo next door. I called police and they showed up soon after and asked to talk to me. So I went outside and explained everything. I know the guy did not belong there and it was 2am. The officer said I most likely scared him off. He then proceeded to scold me lol and asked what I was doing out so late and it's not safe for young ladies. I said, "officer, my bf dropped me off right in front and waited for me to get inside before driving off." He told me again to ne careful and get home earlier. I'll never forget him either. It wasn't flirting or anything like that. I felt the genuine concern. I just want to let you all know that I appreciate you. Take care and stay blessed.
