- SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Some Illinois lawmakers want to give extra money to schools that replace armed security officers with unarmed social workers and behavior therapists, an approach to safety that's far different than a national push to add police or arm teachers following a mass shooting at a Florida high school.
Rep. Emanuel "Chris" Welch, a Hillside Democrat, said he proposed the plan after hearing from advocates who argue that investing in mental health resources is the best way of treating the epidemic of violence.
His plan, which is backed by 16 other Democrats in the House, would allow schools to apply to an optional grant if they promise to reallocate funding for school-based law enforcement to mental health services, including social workers or other practices "designed to promote school safety and healthy environments."
We can hardly wait. No doubt it will cut the workload on Second Watch by 25% plus the School Officers will be back pushing a beat car, alleviating watch shortages.

Sounds good to me. I'm interested to see how well they do with an armed offender bent on killing. Besides, have you seen a CPS school lately. The place is a prison.
Surveillance cameras placed in and outside the facility.
Guards placed at the entrance.
Guards walking the facility amongst the prisoners, I mean students.
Metal detectors placed at the entrances.
Metal doors that are only opened electronically after being buzzed by some unseen guard watching you via camera.

A good idea. These school and other mass shooters are all mentally disturbed. We need to put mental health experts into our schools to confront and calm them, not police or armed teachers to kill the poor disturbed folks.

Any one keeping track of these school shooting. As I was discussing high schools with another police officer we both agreed that Northside College Prep was extremely liberal and the teachers feel it’s their duty to brain wash their students into this leftist way of thinking. This is why I’m paying several thousands of dollars to keep my kids away from CPS.
So that leads me to my question. How many of these school shootings occurred in public schools versus private school?

So the Crazies can be taken off the streets and put in a rubber room so society is safe from them. Not a bad idea but the approach is wrong. Keep the security and add the social workers. It's bad enough already what is there to lose, a little more tax dollars? Figure the cost difference between incarceration and this program. Make it a successful program. In Illinois though, this too will most likely be a failure.

The police are going to be called anyway when some client freaks out and gets violent in the counselor's office. This won't save any money, nor will it make our prisons/collective schools any safer.

Good, but please work into the law that those violence mitigation specialists are to be used instead of 911. No more of the BATIP during the day and the school dismissal special attention at....certain schools...sucking up 2nd aaaaaand 3rd watch resources. I’m all for pulling all CPD out of public schools. It will never happen but the lesson would be satisfying.
The basic concept of trying to get help for the mentally ill is a good one. The problem is that history suggests that it will need to be backed up with places to lockup those who can't be helped but are a threat to the rest of us.
The history of such places is pretty grim and no one who knows how those places actually operated wants to go back to such an abomination.
I'm all for it. Let's do it. Pull School Units out and return them to duty. Make sure that it's in writing and for the next 20 years. Don't call 911 for anything. Handle all incidents internally, very bit-of-it. Don't be well CPD needs to be involved everything.

Simple concise to the point!Why also does rahm have a detail of coat holders as large as the first lady of the United States? We know he has the hidden wedding dress,and the ballerina back ground could it be repressed feelings is this why he has so many? Also has at least 6 new the biggest Suv's available that get 7-8mpg, but yet he says "I am an environmentalist!" Strange how the rahm controlled sun-times is shutting down soon, wonder what happened? Sounds like a state controlled machine to feed high priced shrinks to "treat" mentally damaged children. Most likely due to parental neglect and abuse.

When I went to Catholic grade and high schools the nuns and the priests took care of being the guards and therapists if you know what I mean. There were no problems, pow-zoom!
