Incompetent Coroner
- The Cook County medical examiner's office is taking the unusual step of reviewing the entire caseload of a pathologist who was fired the end of last year, so far changing eight findings with nearly 200 cases still to be re-examined.
“They were clerical errors and then there were some errors with his medical findings,’’ medical examiner spokeswoman Becky Schlikerman said of the work by John E. Cavanaugh.
In one case, Cavanaugh's finding of a suicide was changed to undetermined because of questions over how the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head. In another, his finding of undetermined was changed to homicide after the review found evidence of an assault.
In all, the office plans to review all 219 cases handled by Cavanaugh from the time he was hired in January 2017, at an annual salary of $250,000, to when he was fired last November. So far, the office has examined 23 cases and changed findings in eight of them.
One-third of the reviewed cases so far were reclassified. Just who exactly was he connected to? And at a quarter million per year, how many more incompetent coroners remain on staff?

Come on, SCC, this coroner is fully competent. He simply played the numbers game that was demanded of him to keep the official homicide rate lower than the actual homicide rate. Nothing in this city is legit. Just like the “tissue boxes” loaded with multiple babies didn’t exist at MEs Office...bullshit, I saw them myself. Workers actually pointed them out and called them tissue boxes and explained multiple babies were in there.

It is virtually impossible to be fired from the County because no one is hired without "knowing someone" and the higher the salary - the bigger the clout. Who recommended this guy?
Unbelievable. I’d like to see these findings - changed from suicide to homicide - hold up in court. Oh, that’s right, no one’s going to be arrested for the homicide anyway, so no worries.

Does the finding go out to COPA for publication?
Do the insurance companies get notified for possible pay outs?
Is the state medical board notified?

One day three dead bodies turn up at the Cook County ME's Office, all with unusually big smiles on their faces. ME Cavanaugh calls 911 and the beat car responds.
Cavanaugh gives this account:
"First body: Policeman, 60, died of heart failure while making love to his mistress. Hence the enormous smile."
"Second body: Fireman, 43, won a million dollars on the lottery, spent it all on whisky. Died of alcohol poisoning, hence the smile."
The copper then asks,"What about the third body?"
"Ah," says the ME Cavanaugh, "This is the most unusual one.
Chicago Alderman, struck by lightning."
"Why is he smiling then?" inquires the copper.
"Thought he was having his picture taken."

Was he just trying to keep the numbers down for the politicals, or did he also take cash under the table from potential suspects?
Wow, all suicides and not homicides. Incredible and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Chicago is full of incompetent hacks everywhere. Uof I,County, CPS, The City, etc. are filled by people without the credentials or experience just passes from friends in high places.
The implications for rahm are considerable, as there may be many more previous deaths which will now be re-classified as homicides and be added to his alleged “decline” in crime. Truth is a bitch!
Coroners are doctors, right?

Coroners are not necessarily doctors. They are elected officials. Many counties they are ambulance operators or Funeral Directors.
Medical examiners on the other hand are actual medical doctors. I wonder if this guy is related to somebody and that's how he got hired.

Good question. All the articles I read never mention how he was hired. Who sponsored him. You don’t get a county job making that kind of money without a sponsor Also it was kept quiet when he got demoted. If it was CPD the demotion would be in every paper and the reason why

Medical Examiner (Clinical Pathologist) is probably a great medical area to practice.
