Shrinking Chicago

  • The Chicago area has lost residents for a third consecutive year while the country’s Southern and Western areas saw population gains.

An estimated 13,286 residents left the Chicago metropolitan area — which extends from the city to its suburbs and into parts of Indiana and Wisconsin — according to 2017 data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. It translates to a decrease of less than 1 percent.

The metropolitan area has seen gradual declines in population, losing 11,177 residents in 2016 and 3,371 in 2015, according to the Census Bureau.

That doesn’t mean all of the areas within the metropolitan area are losing residents. Suburban counties such as Will, Kane, McHenry and Kendall saw population increases in 2017. In fact, the population of Kendall County, west of the city, increased by 1 percent, or 1,645 residents, census data show.

In contrast, Cook County saw a loss of 20,093 residents in 2017, according to the Census Bureau. Still, it maintained its spot as the second-most-populous county in the nation while also experiencing the largest numerical decrease in population compared with the nation’s other top 10 counties. It adds up to less than a 1 percent population change.
What could possibly be causing this desertion?

SO in the last election, the D's realized that their base was condensed inside a few small areas of the country. Rahm decides to help out by making D's leave Chicago and saturate Republican areas. They are doing this in hopes of disrupting the next vote. I remember reading a recent article about how a Chicago woman moved to Indiana and was defending it as a great place. She went on to say how she hopes to use her vote to make it even better by bringing in more liberal ideas. She fails to see that the reason she likes Indiana is because her liberal ideas are not there and that she will corrode the very area she is defending by voting like a Chicagoan.

Leadership and skills were replaced.

Seen it all with Fast Eddie, Chicago 29, Mayor Washington, Mayor Jane, Little Richie, and asshole Rahm the littlest punk I ever seen. It was about getting the money, cause in Chicago there is alway more to steal, always more.

Kids grew up moved on, Wife and myself retired we always knew we would not stay since the days of little Richie I sensed the BIG decline coming. Money was going to run out or the taxpayer would.

Wife found the house in Oklahoma, up in the mountains. She always been a good shopper! Asshole realtor in Chicago, "Don't go to Oklahoma, those ole boys, racist, all cowboys, drunk Indians..." Just wanted us to stay and move every few years to declining neighborhoods or being taxed out. In other words his job security ...not our best interest.

Knowing today, what I could have known thirty years ago, I would have left Chicago then. Best thing I ever done since saying I do to my wife of forty years.

Today, it is simple math to leave, no job security, might even wind up in prison years down the road when the new group of social justice warriors decide its your time to review a case that been closed, shut, and forgotten by all. Except someone wanting to be a by line in the SLum Times or needs a footing for local Alderthief.

Nothing in Chicago these days 'cept a few pizza places, good beef sandwich places....and you know what. You can have them FEDEX them to you. Most are closing up or moving now days also.

My advice, move while you can still sell your property. When the state/city go bankrupt, you will be walking away from it. You won't have any choice living next to dudu inc. or the hoards of illegals that will be demanding things and free stuff. Remember ...when you move to a new place, that democrat Chicago life ...These people never seen that, they do not want to. Be yourself. You will always fit in.

Acquaintances moved to Florida but visited here recently and talked of how nice it was to leave our very high taxes. Problem is, they are democrats and will vote that way in every Florida election "because our parents always did". They will soon turn Florida into a high tax state and just cannot admit that the party their parents voted for has been hijacked by far left radicals long ago.

This is exactly what is wrong with a large segment of society. A family from "the community" will move from a shithole part of the city to a nice suburb, and then bring their ghetto ways with them, which ruins the nice suburb and eventually turns it into the same type of place that they left in the first place. Makes no sense. If you want a nice place to live, learn how to behave and keep up your property, or keep your ass in the ghetto.

Rahm is being helped by the suburbs.

Real estate taxes in the suburbs like Wilmette and Winnetka and Oak Park and River Forest have gone through the roof with the average homeowner paying $15-25,000 a year in property taxes. After the kids have graduated from high school, many of the homeowners move to the city because the property taxes are much lower.

And when Chicagoans with kids see the property taxes in the suburbs, they often stay in Chicago.

If the property taxes in the suburbs were 50% less, Chicago would have a much larger population loss.

More room for non taxpaying illegals. Can you tax increase needed, you can't but Rahim can. First order of business after he is reelected. State is also going to enact another sales tax increase to make up shortfall of revenues due to the 33,700 leaving state last year. Looks like a 1-1.5% increase being considered. This on top of a toll road fee increase and $.10/gallon gas tax. The beat goes on.

But, but, but.....you tax paying fools can't leave......who's gonna pay for all the unfortunates here? Our public schools are filled with
children who need your support, who need you to keep paying in to support them....our teachers need you to pay their percentage of
retirement fund 7%, so they can continue to teach the 50% that might graduate high school with their 6th grade ability to read, write, speak.

You are needed to buy homes and pay exorbitant house taxes for the privilege of living in such a safe, clean, haven of democracy. You need to stay and shop the Golden Mile downtown, especially after dark, it's really very safe. Read your newspapers, watch the tv news.....there are no roving bands of hundreds of youths- beating, robbing, accosting people who are visiting our downtown......if it isn't on tv, or in the
newspapers, it didn't happen.......there isn't an increase of armed carjackings.....well, maybe a few misguided children did take a few joyrides, as children might tend to do, but really, they were just funning! So stay.....enjoy the hot summer that's coming.....

We are all in this together......stay, enjoy, visit our wonderful museums and shops.....thank you......R.E.

A lot of The Community are moving out to what were once bucolic Republican strongholds. The town where I still live has seen a huge influx of Section 8 renters. I have noticed that they have doubled the size of the county courthouse, and now have doubled the size of the county jail, as well. Our local law enforcement professionals all assure us that there is no crime problem, but if that is true, why did we need to fund all this expansion of the courts, and the slammer?

I have seen reports all the way from eastern Iowa of their celebration of an increased Tapestry of Diversity there, and its resultant criminal activity.

Born in Chicago in 1970. I went away to college, but I came back about 1997.

I moved to Texas in about 2008. Here's what helped me along:

Taxes were outrageous, property, sales (who taxes food), bottles, city sticker (really?).

Parking (enforcement, really) was outrageous.

"No Parking in the Loop" ticket about once a month even though a Federal Court said it was an illegal ordinance (and I didn't violate any other parking restrictions at the same time). "Not parking in a metered space" tickets, for basically finding a spot that isn't controlled by a meter, but read the ordinance, it doesn't say what I was ticketed for, dozens of times. They towed, I mean trashed, my motorcycle when I parked in the morning at the same spot I always parked, there was no "No Parking" sign. When I came out for lunch, there was a No Parking sign and my bike was ruined. At least the city is transparent. It's not the Police who did all the awful things, but Revenue. Yes, it's freaking called Revenue. Not even a feint toward making all this non sense sound like it's for safety or something.

Redlight tickets went into effect even though the city did not comply with the state statute that authorized the city to have redlight tickets.

My neighborhood, Ukranian Village became way expensive to the point I missed the homeless guys pushing shopping carts stacked with pallets and the immigrants who would drive a city tow vehicle onto Superior Street, drop the towed vehicle, and then swap out the rims, it was faster than NASCAR. Note, the bums and rim thefts were things I found amusing, and not a reason I moved.

The weather didn't help. I was back visiting for SnowMageddon, so I was already gone, but Freakin Thundersnow, and the buses losing traction and sealing off Lake Shore Drive?

The smoking ban didn't help; even as a smoker, I kind of understand that one (but taxes on smokes were offensive, I used to go to Indiana a lot, and grocery/appliance/gas shop too, long before Soda Tax). Anyway, many friends and I won't go 3 hours without a smoke, so we had to stop going to NHL and baseball games. It just wansn't worth it. After the smoking ban, my credit card, which was all bars and restaurants went from about $1000 a month to almost nothing. I'm sure that made non-smokers happy. I was OK with "HandleBar" that was voluntarily non-smoking, but to pass an ordinance to "protect workers" when the owner/bartender in my dive bar smoked smelled worse than an old ciggy butt.

Looking over the foregoing, I sure seem like a real jag. Chicago's probably happy to be rid of me. That's OK, I'm happy I moved on too.

The little numbers all add up. Fact is Illinois will loose at least one, perhaps two congressional seats after the next census and that is a big deal. Per capita debt of each Chicago resident is greater then Detroit. That piper must be paid sooner or later somehow. Service cuts, pension cuts or tax increases or all of the above. Not one of those options play well for the city.

Not in tornado alley,...On the Eastern side of the state seven hour drive from Chicago, the counties of Cherokee, Delaware, Adair, Sequoyah, Le Flore seem to all roll into one, hardly a stop sign or red light as you drive thru them all (minus the bigger towns). You see U.S. Marshals cars / Game Warden cars, more often then Sheriffs or town police reason being Indian reservation land ( this is all Cherokee Nation) Right on the Ar. border along (N & S of I-40 South of I-44 )...Fort Smith Ar. ( across the river, hanging Judge Parker town.. wonderful museum ) Tahlequah Oklahoma, Cherokee capital are the "big towns". Everything within a hour drive, no traffic, no lights,...open country roads 65 mph.

Muskogee and Tulsa are the big city. Did I mention Tenkiller Lake, any fisherman knows world class bass and crappie fishing in Vian. Almost like Mayberry and Leave it to Beaver type towns. I leave my keys in the pick-up and car. At the house, doors we hardly lock when going to town, never at night anymore, sometimes we do if gone all day. Leave the windows screen door open at night in fall and spring. (we have dogs)

Perhaps thru SSC a private message could be arranged for my actual address and phone. As I stated I would be more happy to show any CPD/CFD the area for a weekend.

Life outside of Chicago is great, no problem fitting in. Just be yourself. This big Polish guy with the "Chicago accent" has no problems wife loves it also. Had a few friends from Chicago come down, old partner from the 02 (04) Simon (black man) visited with his wife and son he said six more and they are gone from Chicago. He is looking to Florida as his family moved there last year.

Wouldn’t waste my time talking to this guy. He’s wrong about everything especially the $250,000 exemption
Oklahoma give you a $10,000 deduction on your pension or 401k or in our case deferred. So if you use the 10k on your pension you still have to pay the full state tax on your deferred plus your pension minus a 10,000 deduction.

Oklahoma Retirement Tax Friendliness. Oklahoma provides a full exemption for Social Security retirement benefits. It also provides a $10,000 deduction toward other types of retirement income such as from a 401(k) or a pension.
