One Thousand "Extra"
Where have they been hiding you ask? Well, they aren't really "extra."
- Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson announced Tuesday that the department will be ramping up officer deployment over Memorial Day weekend in an effort to curb shootings over the historically violent holiday.
More than 1,000 additional officers will be deployed citywide over the weekend, Johnson said at a press conference at CPD headquarters. There will also be an influx in officer deployment throughout the summer as well.
“You’ll see a significant presence, obviously, on the lakefront, downtown areas, but they’ll also be in the communities, so we’re not leaving any area of the city untouched,” Johnson said.
Johnson was joined by Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, Chicago Fire Dept. Commissioner Jose Santiago, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois John Lausch, Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz, DEA Special Agent in Charge Brian McKnight and ATF Special Agent in Charge Celinez Nunez.
So a bunch of these 1,000 aren't actually CPD. And a reporter actually asked an intelligent question:
- Johnson deflected when asked how the influx in officers would be paid for, but department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers’ “elective time off was canceled” and “days off were adjusted for the weekend.”
Only some teams assigned to work the weekend would be paid through overtime, he added.
Well that's bullshit. Anyone who wants to work their day off is being allowed to work it, on their regular shift in their regular Districts.

As it did last year, the department will also execute arrest warrants of for those who are likely to engage in weekend violence, Johnson said.
“Anything that we can do to prevent violence in the city, we’re going to do,” he said.
Sure you can put a price on it Ed - that's why there's a Special Event number being generated that appears on each and every OT slip...so Finance can track it. But don't count on someone FOIA-ing the totals. And if Special Ed knows where these subjects of existing Arrest Warrants are hiding, why haven't they been picked up prior to this weekend?
We realize most reporters aren't intelligent enough to do the leg work and ask the right questions, but you'd think they could find people to point them in the general direction.

Are they utilizing the recruits at the academy? There are at least 500 in the academy and some are 3,4 or 5 months into their training and could be sent to concerts, lakefront, downtown They do it to the Bud Billiken parade and picnic so there is no reason they can do it on Memorial Day

The city certainly hasn't put a price on protecting the safety of the mayor's home on a 24/7/365 basis for the past seven years, but we can. Anyone driving past can see the officer in the front, the officer in the back and the car dedicated to driving around the block. That's 3 officers a watch, 3 watches a day, for nine officers a day. Multiplied by 365, that's 3,285 Police shifts a year, or 26,280 police hours each year to guard a house but not just any house, the mayor's house. Nobody on that assignment is likely to have less than five years on the job, so that's a minimum hourly salary of $45 (just base salary), which comes out to $1,182,000 a year in basic police salary, just to guard the mayor's house, 24/7/365 whether he is home or not. That comes out to $8,274,000 since he has been mayor to guard his house. This doesn't include his CPD personal protective/family chauffeur service. $8,274,000 to protect a house that is worth how much? Meanwhile if you live in the surrounding communities of Wrigleyville, Roscoe Village, Lincoln Square and Uptown with shootings, armed robberies and carjackings you are fucked because in those areas they have put a price on safety and determined it's too expensive.
As if the rest of the year is safe around here. Try hiring enough police to actually make a difference 365 days a year. Dumb asses.

No recruit assignments have been ordered as of today. One class should have been started this week but are being delayed 2 weeks.
I know it will never happen I’ve been retired for three years, and cops will stab each other in the back over the littlest thing. Forget the March downtown, or do both but if you guys just didn’t work any special for one week in the summer it would send a sign, good luck getting the guys to do it though. You can blame it on college tutition, having to send your’s kids to private schools whatever you want but if you can’t afford to miss a couple days of overtime to send a message, you have no one to blame but yourself and you better reevaluate your financial situation . Memorial Day should be a normally quiet weekend, with respect shown for the departed. And I would suspect this is true in many communities, a "normal" American tradition.
But with American traditions and values under threat, I suppose more Police are required to protect those traditions.

There’s so many recruits in the academy there is no room for the 100 newly made detectives. Check out where they are being trained
If you can't put a price on safety, then why is it costing Taxpayers so much money to support Sanctuary Cities that are raising crime rates Nationwide and making a more unsafe Environment for us to live in ?
Trump should pull all Fed assistance isince CPD claims to now have 1,000 additional officers. Why assist a Sanctuary City when Trumps Voters are against them? They wanted it, they got it.
