Bean Bag Shotguns (UPDATES)
Supposedly, the Department has started up a training class for the re-purposed "riot guns" that seldom, if ever, saw service in the last thirty years. An e-mailer tells us this though:
- To sign up for the use of the shotgun, you have to have taken (1) Force Mitigation, (2) be CPR certified, (3) LEMART trained and (4) Shield and Tactical Entry. Failure to have any of these classes will eliminate you from consideration.
Seeing that list, does anyone seriously think that the Department will ever actually authorize the use of a beanbag shotgun? We're going to go out on a limb and say the chances are pretty much zero.

Ummm, why yes yes I do.You are not looking dow the road to the JVD Court Case SCC and no matter what happens, the s%^t will hit the fan with the "community". Dammed if you do - dammed if you don't. Riot if JVD is not guilty - "celebrate (destroy/loot) if found guilty.

And if any one officer is trained on beanbag, beanbag will take precedence over rifle. Even if one officer is trained in beanbag and the other on rifle,there is only one mount in the car for either so beanbag it is....

How can I get cpr certified? I’m not doing it on my own time. How can I get shield/ tactical room entry certified if the department doesn’t offer the class? They don’t want people to be certified with this thing or what?
No thanks, but I'm sure guys will think having the shotgun makes them look cool and get involved. You will get called to every wacky job that puts your freedom and your job at risk. Look at all the law suits with the TASER.

A lot of this stuff is now part of recruit training.
As for the rest of these training programs, make them require you to do it.
Keep your exposure to potential litigation as small as possible and your contributions to Deffered comp as large as possible.

I don't know how this rumor got started. This is the Beanbag Toss Program. We're taking it out into the community.
Here's an idea. Make all Sgt and Lt take shotgun training. They will be the on hook when it goes wrong. Their merit connections will save them but not you. Again training must be mandatory for all command staff. That would put a fast stop to this nonsense.

Reports are freely given and arrests will be made only if the victim agrees to prosecute and signs complaints, all captured on BWC's. Also, we should follow the N.Y.C. example and only respond to seemingly worthy calls. No more responding to "my child disrespecting me" and "my ADHD child won't listen" and assorted nonsense parking and noise complaints.

You'd have to be out of your mind to use one of those. If that bean bag hits someone in the head or heart area just right it's over. No matter how justified you were in using it, you'll be fired and listing your assets in a civil suit.

They took the shotguns out of the Squad cars because the community kept breaking into the cars and stealing the shotguns. One was stolen from a wagon that the “community” set ablaze in the Cabrini. It was recovered in Fred Hampton’s apartment.
There is NO advantage for an officer to obtain any extra training these days. CIT training places you at risk of becoming the next rialmo. Bike training puts you on crowd control. Don’t sign up for ANYTHING because they have already made it clear you are accountable to the training they give you. They will never be accountable to their end of a good faith agreement after training you. They will abandoned you like jvd and rialmo and then ensure to help the SCW to harm you!

Killed or badly injured an old man who said he was a veteran. Copper shot him with the bean bag at the order of a supervisor, copper was still criminally charged. I don't remember what happened with that one.
When I came on in 1979 #00 buck was the order of the day. My, how times have changed.

Well...white beans would be racist, so, probably a mixture of the other four. But I think 'pinto' might be considered derogatory, and the black beans would have to be 'african american' beans. You did take diversity training didn't you?

Perhaps, I don't remember that far back, but the CPR certification is only good for 2 years, I think. Did you get AED trained? I don't think they were invented when I went through.
A 21-year-old Emerson College student has died as a result of injuries sustained during celebrations early this morning on Lansdowne Street after the Red Sox defeated the Yankees. Earlier reports said that the student was hit by a "bean-bag" bullet fired by Boston police as they struggled to control the unruly crowds.

When I went through the academy years ago the instructor came to the class hungover, threw the dummy’s torso on the class room floor and said: “go rent movies from blockbusters”. Then he put his head down on the desk and went to sleep. That was my CPR training. I forgot what movie we rented. CPD training at the best.

You do not know the circumstances, but you are willing to make the officer pay without knowing the whole story. While we do know the sad, devastating outcome, we do not know how it came to pass and "sounds like" is not good enough when it is the basis of a judgement concerning a man's or woman's life and/or employment. It seems like you've got a rope and you are looking for a tree. You need all the facts before you toss that rope over a branch.
