Riverwalk Patrols

  • A team of Chicago police officers will be among the new sights greeting visitors at the downtown riverwalk this summer as the city tries to make sure tourists feel safe in the increasingly popular waterfront party zone.

Six cops will be added to patrol from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily. The increased police presence comes almost a year after two men were shot during an early morning argument on the riverwalk. The June 2017 shooting happened after 2 a.m., so it’s not clear whether these new police patrols would have helped in that case.

But city Fleet and Facilities Management Commissioner David Reynolds said the changes are about making people feel comfortable when the businesses are open and helping clear out the riverwalk after the bars and restaurants close for the day at 11 p.m.
So Fleet and Facilities Management is now running the Department.

Why would we need extra police to patrol the riverwalk when Deputy Chief Ryan just told everybody that downtown is safe?

Six police while the offenders operate in groups of 20 or more.

The reason Fleet and Facilities Management is announcing this is they are providing the fleet of gondolas for Rahm's Venetian Riverwalk Fecal Canal. The six POs will be the oarsmen/gondoliers who will be providing the rides for the tourists. Keep your hands inside the boat!

Six guys working an 11 hour shift? Something is not right there. Also, is that a six man team that needs days off meaning no more than 3-4 will be out at any time? Or if that's 6 at a time, then there must be at least 12-15 assigned to that "team"? What do you say 2FM?

Wait, Second City, don't you remember a certain vendor won the Riverwalk bid and security was part of the contract ? I believe it was something close of $10.mil

So the six POs can call Fleet and Facilities Management when they are overrun by the packs of wildings, because as we all know, all the police are assigned south, and the north side, Mag Mile and legitimate tax paying citizens can go fend for themselves.

CPD is so short handed, most days off will be cancelled this summer - shit is out of control.

If kindney bean da fuh real police Eddie Johnson or his son requested to park in the lot, would you tell either of them “sorry parking for 019 district personnel only”... I doubt it. The LT would have the desk dollies run outside, stop all vehicle traffic in the lot and sweep the spot before they’d pull in.
Arena might be a major league asshole but let’s be fair to all city employees. Whether it’s the alderasshole, dept of transportation, streets and san, cfd, cpd, or whatever, extend that discretion evenly.

“Federal LE parking spots”....what a joke, all non city employees park outside. Period.

WOW ! 6 PO's for the river front . . . About time. but, wait . . . Do they get days off? Do they still get medical time? What about pending court cases they have to attend? I am sure they will all be denied time due until Labor Day, so that would mean - maybe - 3 or 4 at the most - working on any given day?

During a power outage we always had to drive around with our Mars lights activated. I’m surprised some exempt brainiac hasn’t thought about replacing the hats with blue beacons to be worn on coppers’ heads while doing foot patrol. Should this come to pass I apologize in advance.

6 means 2 per Watch. That’s it. Carbine qualified. But the rifle will surely be locked up in the vehicle a few blocks and a huge staircase away. Yep. Also, with no new Pos transferring in, that means may a handful of cars will be answering actual calls district wide. Don’t count on back up. No plan for that. Somebody start monitoring how many cars are working in 001 on any given shift. How many are downed for hospital med runs for prisoners. Try to feel safe.

Anyone watch channel 7 news last night at 10. Ryan and the FBI agent in charge of Chicago office have plans to protect the citizens of Chicago this summer. Especially at all the big venues and the downtown area. Ryan lead you to believe that last year because of the intelligence and tenacity of the CPD a massacre was avoided last summer by the guy who then went to Las Vegas and shot up the convent. He had rented a room in a hotel across from Lopoluzza but moved on because Chicago was too hard a target
