Listening to the radio and checking the e-mail Friday afternoon after we woke up from our beauty sleep - 150 to 200 youths were already gathered downtown around 1500 hours, headed to the lakefront and making creating problems as they traveled. Anyone know if they were stetting up for another night of this?
- A group of teens was seen pushing people into Lake Michigan near Navy Pier Thursday night. The reports follow reported mayhem along beaches and Downtown streets last weekend as roving groups of teenagers caused trouble, forcing Chicago Police officers to try to corral their movements.
The group of about 10 teens was seen pushing people into the lake in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to Chicago Police. Downtown Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) said witnesses described the group of teens catching four different victims off-guard between the hours of 11 p.m. and midnight Thursday. Police said no injuries were reported and no one was taken into custody.
The group “targeted people who were a little bit close to the water, ran up to them with no warning and shoved them into the lake while taunting them,” Hopkins said. “It really sounded like some kind of a game. They were not robbing anyone. They were just doing it out of sheer meanness,” Hopkins said.
So following aldercreature Hopkins' thinking, we should be what? Thankful that they weren't robbing anyone? That they were just involved in some sort of hi-jinks shoving people into near freezing cold water, in the dark, with all manner of underwater obstacles to bang your skull on (if you manage to fall in cleanly without hitting the pavement on the way past)?

I look back fondly on my memories of the 70's when large urban police departments would routinely use decoy units to grab predators. It would be great if CPD had a bunch of undercover cops posing as tourists walking around Navy Pier while this crap was going on.
These assholes are victimizing innocent people who are just trying to have an enjoyable evening. Just think how they feel now after being pushed into the lake. I'd imagine they are outraged and will tell their friends, families, and coworkers what happened and recommend that they not go downtown cause its not safe anymore. This will exponentially reduce the numbers of tourists and visitors to the downtown area, drying up lots and lots of tax payer money.
Lastly, I find it outrageous that the ACLU would rather support these mutts against the police who would try to round them up and send them back where they came from. When is enough really enough? How much abuse does the law abiding public have to take from these feral predators before the handcuffs can come off the police and they are allowed to do their jobs once again? We are living in a bizarro world where right is wrong and wrong is right.

How can you fight back against a mob of hyper active teens? Using deadly force is not justified? If you are walking close to the water with your girlfriend late at night after a few drinks, what are the options? Police cannot help you. If you fight back they will overwhelm you. Remember the department classified this behavior as;"borderline criminal activity". Which is saying we know it is criminal but will not make arrests.

I am the guy who is the victim, I am in shock and in fear the people who tried to cause me to suffer great bodily harm or death were coming back so I left the area to protect myself and to end any further violence . My firearm and right to be armed are all legal,what the offenders forced me to do is justifiable defense and I had no other options .If you find me and want to charge me with being the victim of a crime who was in shock and leaving the area so the unfortunate incident didn't escalate.. you do that.
I am never the guy standing there alone waiting for them to come back or for the states atty. to decide what is politically correct at the moment. Why would anyone want to be that guy?
I often hear people say, I can't leave it's all I know or family is still here. Do yourself a favor and go out, see what's available. Life is too short to stay trapped in this city.

If you see a crowd of "teens" keep an eye on them and make sure you do not become victim to these "teens." Call the police if you see something. After the first person was pushed into the river, the police should have been called. I was downtown a few years ago, and a crowd of "youths" walked up, I made sure to keep my eyes on them and even considered walking across the street to stand in front of the ABC window that people wave to the camera from. They looked suspicious and I was not going to become a victim of them.
