"Merit" Sergeant Investigation

It sure is amazing how many "merit" supervisors are getting into trouble over the years. It's almost like they don't know the job they're supposed to be doing, yet somehow, they got promoted anyway:
  • Remember Sgt. Sam Dickerson, the Chicago cop who wouldn't let Wendy and me turn in a total of eleven guns between us at the June 2 Chicago Gun Buyback? The same cop who ordered me to accompany him outside after he caught me snapping a photo inside the church building where they held their event? The one who banned me from ever participating in a Chicago gun buyback again? You may not remember him – at least by name, but he's gonna remember me.

Yes, I escaped Chicago's Public Safety Headquarters in one piece Monday. The Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson must not have recognized my name or spotted me. Either way, I spent literally all afternoon on the fifth floor, right around the corner from Special Ed's office. At the high-security Internal Affairs Bureau, I completed my part of the formal complaint process against Sgt. Dickerson (pictured, center, holding box).
This is the moron who single out a white guy at a gun turn-in, claimed it was a "private event" even though Chicago Police were all over the building wearing Chicago Police identifiers, and then banned him from the premises AND any future "gun turn in" events, violating we don't know how many laws, Department Orders, and at least one Constitutional Amendment.

You'd think he at least had a passing familiarity with some of those things. Instead, he highlights the general incompetency of "merit" promotees across the board and makes IAD pretend to perform another sham investigation.

I was getting excited until I read the part that you were talking to IAD. Nothing will happen. IAD is the “connected” All the bosses are put there by the Supt. Any investigation is overseen by the Supt and checked by city hall. IAD is not independent. Good luck though.

DUDE go straight for the lawsuit.

A lowly SGT thinks he can ban anybody is an asshat.

YOU cant even ban a homeless weirdo from not doing heroin in a MAC donalds washroom.

IAD can't even investigate a cheating scandal with department EMAILs was used in the same building they have an office in.

SO put in the FED lawsuit and watch as corp council throw a boat load of cash at you to drop it.
OFFICERs cant even tell drug dealers to stop yelling rock and BLOWS.

PHELEGER does what he wants so make the City pay. Wanna be ANTI GUN and not return lawful carried weapon file suit.

WANT to tow stolen cars and make the victims pay 800$ to retrieve a stolen vehicle?
MAKE them pay.

This is America...

This job is dead. Abysmal morale, no respect on the street for police, cops treating other cops like garbage, corruption and nepotism at all levels. 20+ years ago we were tight. Moot point now. I’m pretty sure Sam is retiring next month? July or maybe August at the latest I think. He’s getting a nice job in the private sector so he will be gone before this process even gets wheels on it. Once he retires the investigation closes as he can no longer be forced to cooperate with an administrative proceeding thus closing the case. It ended before it began...

No the beef is not going to be gone, you will not get your retirement star a retirement party, or be allowed to carry concealed because you’re not retired in good standing so you cannot get the IROCC card. Also they can still even though you’re retired, take money from your pension check as a penalty for whatever days you would’ve been suspended for if that is what the decision is!

And to the person who said it won't affect him, you are so wrong. Retiring with a open CR won't allow you to retire in good standing which means you can't carry a gun as a retired Cop. Seperated = lieutenant promotion

Divorced = command spot

Clueless = deputy chief spot

Beef isn’t gone once you retire. It was to be settled before you retire. Otherwise there are restrictings on your retirement, not major ones , but like no retirement star or I’d and a few others. I agree with you about him not caring, but you just can’t get a bunch of CR’s and retire

You mean the IAD dint go out to meet the complainant or phone call?
Even before they seen him walk in, IAD closed the case with an Unfounded.
Simply gave him a feel good for show interview, if that.

The IAD likes to advertise their openings with all these high standards and qualifiers, but in the end the assignment goes to the ones with the ability to think in a manner to fit a current political narrative.
Likihood IAD took this case as not about a Sgt demeanor issue but a citizen interrupting a community public relations stunt, umm ...event.
Would same apply if the threatening attitude presented were at an agitated community street or traffic stop event?
No, then it would be a Sgt problem.

On to the Merit issue and picking the best -
How many Merit Sgts actually spend more than 3 years if that, in a District?
How many POs put in quality Watch and street time before Merit bumps?
Merit Sgts are a necessary rung on the Merit ladder of Dept. diversity success.
A good portion just can’t do and never had done...police work.
Not everyone that applies for the Job isn’t necessarily cut out for mittnights or ‘noons.
Far too many dedicated POs have been passed over for ass kissers.

FOP, reduce that 30% Merit giveaway down to wage increase ratios.
We can live without the diversity.

IAD is terrible at investigations. You can lie to them as a sworn member and no rule 14 will be brought against you. This is why the department is so f'ed up. They keep letting things get pushed under the rug. When the $#i+ hits the fan then they want to act as if the investigations were done properly. IAD have open investigations that should have been closed as soon as statements were given. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to close out a case. Good luck on getting a fair shake.

I applaud this guy. All of this gun control is bullshit. Anyone with half a brain (not damaged by the lame stream media) will tell you so. He is gaming a screwed up system and I think it is great. If you have any inkling that buybacks will stop the murders in the westside killing fields you are nuts!

The problem is guns are not like a gallon of Milk. A gallon of Milk has a finite shelf life. A gun can be made in 1895 and it will still kill you dead in 2018. In 50, 75, 100 years what do you think will happen with your service pistol? That Glock/Sig/Ruger will still be able to shoot in a hundred years. You really can't throw it out like an old Stereo System or a Vacuum Cleaner or that stale milk.

And it looks like Trump is going to get 1 for sure and maybe another 2-3 SCOTUS Judges.. Good for the NRA, good for the Police.

MAGA!!!

You make me think - are we too quick to trash one of our own? Yeah, I hate the merit hacks but I’ve read a few comments About Sam being a good guy. Now, go and read this jagoff’s link. He has pics trashing police parked near a hydrant, claiming officers look like buffoons handling weird weapons and trying to figure them out like a tunics cube. Is this someone I’m expected to say, “yeah, he seems like an innocent peach?” He’ll no. I’ve recovered weapons that were unfamiliar to me and I have plenty of experience with weapons in the police and the military - guess the amazing gun savvy citizen is some amazing delta force operator in his formative life. So, my take is the white gun guy is a police-hating jagoff that was looking to file a police beef, the evidence of which is on his post, some of which I just referenced. Maybe he was being pushy or confrontational with the Sgt and he the Sgt got fed up with it. We all know we’ve gotten the bullshit ghetto beefs. For that reason I am reserving my judgement of the Sgt and definitely saying the citizen sounds like a cunt.

What a great guy to allow you to solve a murder instead of letting a killer go free because your info came from "his" C/I. You're a brain-dead loser, and we're all glad you're retired. Keep reading the blog and reliving your glory days with racist Sam. Idiot.

For whatever it's worth, this guy goes all over turning in junk guns. Whether you think it's a good cause or not (and I do), it's kind of counterproductive to get indignant when someone gets called out for clearly abusing the system, however broken the buyback system is.

Excruciating detail:

For whatever it's worth? It's worth nothing. You don't understand that these gun buyback events are feel-good publicity stunts that don't do a damn thing to prevent violence. Most of the guns turned in are junk guns, or brought in by senior citizens who don't want a gun in their house after a spouse died. None of the guns turned in come from gangs or the "streets." No one is abusing the system. If you think it's a worthwhile cause, you should be happy for EVERY gun that is turned in. This man was prevented from participating like everyone else, just because he was white, not someone "from the community." You clearly have no idea what this man does with the proceeds of the guns he turns in. You also have no clue that he does this to illustrate the stupidity and ineffectiveness of these turn-in programs. More importantly, you're missing the fact that a Chicago police sergeant has no right to turn this man away, nor to ban him from future events, nor to prevent him from taking pictures inside the event. If anyone was "abusing the system," it was racist Sgt Dickerson, and this guy called him out.

Dear unpublished dumbass,

You seem to be under the impression that we had something to do with this incident and filed some sort of complaint. Go to the top of the post and click on the embedded link that will take you to the actual quoted article and read it all.

We forgot step one - pull your head out of your ass.

Also they can still even though you’re retired, take money from your pension check as a penalty for whatever days you would’ve been suspended for if that is what the decision is!

Uh, no. That’s not how this works...

Oh no, he can’t get his IROCC card and retirement creds, including badge. Boo hoo.

Who the fuck cares? With concealed carry in IL, why would he want to carry on an IROCC and have to qualify annually? He’s probably not broke, so he can afford the 5 year renewal. Why would he want a retirement badge - so he can flash it around and try to badge his way out of tickets? Does anyone get pulled over that much? There is no need for a retirement badge or IROCC for grown ass men who don’t want to play police when they retire. If the star is so important to hang on his wall, he can have Blankington make one for him. Aside from decoration, it serves no purpose as once retired you have no arrest powers beyond that of the average citizen and no need for a display of police affiliation.

It’s hilarious to hear the things that are precious to you guys. “I WAS CPD - see my badge?” Lol, no one cares dude. Stop living in the past. Anyone who knows they had a good career as a cop doesn’t need proof.

Turn in guns in your own community. This program is for the violent areas to rid guns & hopefully slow down the shootings. Go FUCK yourself!!.

Cute story. None of that changes what happened in this case. He targeted a white man for discrimination based solely on his race. Wow, you’re exactly what’s wrong with our current department. Don’t speak for me, you angry, mouthy little fuck. I appreciate this old timer’s insight and how dare you speak to another officer that way for no good reason. I would rather work with all the old-timers than you divisive, entitled and mouthy morons. Keep flapping your gums, just like the scarred puppies do to the police in the ghetto.

"poof just like that he's gone"???? you are obviously too stupid to realize when he puts in his papers in August if there's an open CR# HE CAN'T RETIRE unless the CR is cleared. If he retires under investigation guess what???? No retirement star or ID card meaning no HR218 concealed carry. Not that simple is it Mr. Know it all.

6/28/2018 07:28:00 PM

Only it it's a very serious CR that might result in firing or criminal charges. Otherwise it's not a problem.

You are an ass. Because it is a bullshit allegation and not a serious or criminal one, IAD will quietly administratively close the investigation due to the fact that he is not a Department member, or find the allegation not sustained.

I have to disagree with you DUDE! First if you served honorably, and are proud of what you did while on the job you don't use the badge to flash it around. It is just a reminder of one of the major accomplishments in your lifetime. (maybe you don't meet that criteria!).
Additionally concealed carry is only good in Illinois or the states that offer reciprocity. IROCC is good in ALL states. So if you stay home in mommy's basement and don't travel anywhere your are right that concealed carry is good for you. But if you have a life and want to travel and more importantly have the ability to protect your family there is nothing wrong with IROCC. And so what you have to qualify once a year. That is probably the only time MOST (certainly not all) retirees fire their weapon. SO it can be a good thing! Additionally (and Im sure you don't understand this) when you go to qualify it is very likely you will run into an old friend that you can say hi to and possibly re-kindle an lost friendship. Its not so bad.

Your post is not entirely true or accurate. Anybody can retire. They can't stop you from retiring. However the rest is true in your post if you retire with an active CR #

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Especially the part of qualifying once a year. Been retired over 11 years and feel if I’m going to carry on certain occasions (don’t carry all the time) I should have the skills to pass the qualification. Not the skills I had 5 years ago on the Carry Conceal

I am a Lieutenant who happens to be RANK ORDER from Detective, Sergeant and now my current position. All though I'm glad having not to owe anyone, I will say that many of the screw-ups both other W/C's and I face come from other RANK ORDER supervisors. A reminder, because someone happens to be Merit, it does not mean that the individual in question isn't worthy enough to hold a curtain position. Everyone on this job makes mistakes, we just need to except it and move on.

Wow what a sorry response from an alleged LT. We don't care how you was promoted so get over yourself chump. Everyone on this job does NOT make mistakes so stop covering for incompetent
merit hacks! I will NOT except it as you say nor move on, that is the problem with this department.
